Thanks for all your inputs. Now I have to figure a way of getting a
loan of a Lavry or Benchmark to see what you guys are raving about.

Last time I decided to try out a new DAC, Digital Village in Barnet
were happy to sell me their demo Lucid DA2496 (this was before the
Benchmark existed) on the understanding that I could return it if it
didn't come up to scratch, or exchange it for a brand new one if I
liked it. (I ended up returning for a refund). Maybe you could try
asking them if they'd consider the same approach on a Benchmark?

The Mhdt labs nos dacs have been getting a lot of attention recently and
they are relatively inexpensive.

value. Some audiophiles are too snobby for it. Well, I know one with
Dali Megalines who uses a Lavry Blue. The point is output quality,
yes? If Benchmarks and Lavrys are good enough for mastering studios
then they are absolutely good enough for home use.

I agree there is usually decent value in pro gear, expecially if you
are using it for a pro job, like recording, etc :) Mastering engineers
have very different objectives in listening to sound than audiophiles.
I would take audio listening advice from most mastering engineers with
a grain of salt. Pro sound and high end audio are two separate worlds
with little in common. Van Alstine UltraDAC and the new Bel Canto are
excellent, very musically enjoyable DACs in the $1000-2000 category.

Considering how poorly some recordings are released these days, I don't
know if this is necessarily good criteria... ;-)

Unfortunately none of these are readily available in the UK and anything
sourced from the US will probably be 120V instead of 220V but thanks for
taking the time to reply. I'll check to see if any of them can
accomodate 120-240V.

You're probably looking in the wrong type of stores. HiFi shops won't
stock these products - they are primarily professional studio
equipment, and you need to go to pro studio dealers to get them. Places
like Sound Tools, Digital Village and the like.

Looking at Sound Tools' website, I see the Benchmark DAC1 is £665, and
the Lavry DA10 is £589. Digital Village stock the Benchmark, but not
the Lavry.

I don't know about Benchmark and Mytek, but I know for a fact that the
Lavry is 120-240 50/60hz. You can use it in the UK by swapping out the
power cord or just using an adapter.

Look at the Lavry web site and contact them for distributor info -- I'm
certain you can get one in the UK. Worst case, EMS from the states would
take 3 days or so.

I disagree Phil, I bought a MF Tri-vista DAC a few years ago... it was
very average IMHO and soon got sold. It's funny there were only 1200
of these made but I can always find plenty of the up for sale. I use
to like MF stuff 5-10 years ago but these days I find little in their
range I like. I find the Lavry and Benchmark out perform it.

Much of it is personal taste and system synergy. In contrast to the
above comment, I very much liked the MF Tri-Vista DAC and Lavry, yet
found the Benchmark very edgy, sharp, and analytical. And while it
trailed all of these DACs in the amounts of detail and imaging, I
preferred the Bel Canto DAC2 to all of the above for its warmth and
musicality in my system...(unfortunately, the DAC2 is no longer in
production, but used ones can be found for very good prices...)

Why not Musical Fidelity gears since u r right in the middle of UK? I
currently enjoy the A3.24 ($600 US) very much over my high end Sony
SACD 9000ES player. It is warmer, lusher full bodied sound w/ high
quality output stage that works very well w/ my passive volume control
unit.

I agree with the above - it is down to system synergy and personal
preference. There are no absolutes. I find the MF DAC's to warm up my
otherwise slightly grey-sounding system. The Benchmark was too cold for
me.
I hear good things about the new v8 Dac's which would be a 1-box
solution for me, so I will certainly investigate them.
