[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter as external DAC - which cable?
IF the Transporter and the CD player digital connectors are true 75Ohm (possibly with a pulse-transformer termination), then a 75ohm cable with 75ohm BNC connection would be the best sounding. I dont think other RCA digital cables (so called 'audiophile' brands) will improve the sound (it might sound different though). -- SoftwireEngineer SoftwireEngineer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7000 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28701 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Yes, quite correct, it is the 50 ohm type which has the fatter pin.I well remember being told off by more experienced colleagues years ago for putting 50 ohm leads on to oscilloscope inputs ( always 75 ohm ) compared with RF signal generators etc which were generally 50 ohm. -- holmsn holmsn's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3809 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28701 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Thanks for that - I'm pretty certain it's 50ohm cable going by those diagrams and descriptions. I asked an electronics mate of mine and he said he didn't think it would make much difference. He reckoned the most likely effect was that it would lose signal strength (my words, not his) on account of the reflections at the 75-50ohm and 50-75ohm transitions (again, my words!). Given that it works as it is, and sounds a lot better than the cd player, I think I'll stick! It's always fun to hear about the theory though, even if I do only understand 50% of it. ;-) Max Triode;146788 Wrote: > Depends what you mean by "network cable". Depends what you mean by "network cable". Old ethernet cable and much lab stuff is 50 ohm characteristic impedance. Patch cables used for telco transmission links [1.5M, 2M, 34M, 45M etc] is 75 ohm. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter as external DAC - which cable?
Max, Over a meter or so, the cable is neither 50 or 75 ohms. It needs to be much longer to develop it's characteristic impedence but 50 and 75 ohm BNC's are physically different, IIRC it's the diameter of the pin that's different Craig -- Craig Craig's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=96 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28701 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter as external DAC - which cable?
If I remember correctly, the BNC networks cables are 50ohms, not 75ohms. And the transporter wants 75ohms, I saw in one of the other threads. This difference is enough to degrade signal quality, so a proper 75ohms should be better. -- tomsi42 SB3, Rotel RC-1070/RB-1070, dynaBel Exact, Kimber Kable 4TC and Timbre. tomsi42's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2477 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28701 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I'm pretty much a cable agnostic (especially after recent comparisons with my mates), but now I'm just an analogie agnostic. When I got my Benchmark I started out with a Belden cable which sounded pretty good. Then I got a Black Rhodium Scherzo off fleabay as an experiment - marked improvement in all areas but especially bass (a lot more of it). So after seeing rave reports on the Stereovox XV2 I thought I'd give that a try - much tighter bass and the soundstage was suddenly much wider and more 3D. The XV2 is definitely staying, I'm puzzled that I've heard little to no difference in various analogues yet such marked difference in digitals but hey ho, it's all sounding good :) -- Rangdo Rangdo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5238 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28701 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter as external DAC - which cable?
There is ample evidence that digital cables do have an impact on sound quality. I have read several articles about it that you can easily find. Sorry I did not save the links. Cheap plastic RCA audio cables do not sound as good as a well shielded cable. Whatever cable best preserves a 75 ohm composite video signal will work best for digital audio. Usually this means more shielding and good metallurgy. BNC is a professional well-shielded connection, so it's not surprising to me that it sounds better! As for the CD player, it is very handy to have when you want to play a new CD or a friend's CD without ripping to computer first. Any cheap CD player's digital output is likely more than adequate source for transporter as DAC. http://www.audioholics.com/techtips/buyingguides/cablebudgetguidelines.php -- richidoo richidoo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3097 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28701 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
