chinablues;158566 Wrote: Is the Denon 3805 such a weak link in this set-up? ie keep the Denon as the pre-amp add something like the Rotel 1095? Well, maybe not weak, but I'd say you certainly can do better. I opted for the RB1090 as my focus was on the stereo part, and I figured the Denon could take care of all the surround channels. And it makes a nice difference! The 1090 is in much better control of the BWs. I really like the sound, and I can play really loud without it getting unbearable :-) That's when I'm home alone though! Of course, I'd like to add a 1075 or 1095 for the surround, but at the moment I simply think that's not worth it for me. Maybe a mono Rotel amp just for the center channel, that would be nice, so all front channels are equal, rotel-bw. I don't think it matters much for the surround channels (sr/sr/sbl/srb) though, the Denon is fine for those. I'm really happy with the big Rotel. As they always say, for you it depends on what you're looking for. Are you happy with the surround, but do you want to optimize your stereo sound? Then adding a stereo power amp is great. You'll be able to put some more money in the stereo part then. If it's important for you to optimize all channels, then maybe the 1095 would be cool (or 1080/1095 for 7-channel!). If you have too much money, listen to the Classe amps, they are s nice :-) jan PS. I just noticed the rb1090 disappeared from the Rotel web site. I did read somewhere that they might be working on a followup. Thanks for the response. The biggest problem for me here in China is finding the stuff. According to Rotel web site, the nearest dealer is in Hong Knog. Interesting thread for me. Thanks to all the contributors. I have BW 804 mains center + BW 805 rears for the AV part. Also a Velodyne DD15 sub. Just added a Transporter. But running it all off a Denon 3805 AVR. For TP into the 3805 I normally run in 'pure stereo' mode. I first heard the BW's at a specialist BW dealer here in Beijing. At that time I was travelling monthly from the US to China. Of course the BW's in the dealership were being driven by big amps. Rotel I think. I'll need to go back for a look. Quite an interesting shopping mall(Oriental Plaza)...bose upstairs, BW downstairs! I bought the equipment in the US before coming out to China on assignment. The BW's appealed not only the sound and the looks, but also being British allowed a little bit of patriotism to creep into the purchasing decision. Although I'm pleased with what I've got, reading the postings it really looks like I need to be thinking of audio amps to drive the two front 804s. Certainly, if my memory serves me right, what I heard at the dealer, was that bit better than what I have at home. Appreciate any comments on this. Is the Denon 3805 such a weak link in this set-up? Don't get hung up on BW's. Except for the top of the line -- and even then -- there are better, more neutral speakers for the same or less money. Adamslim's advice is good: find a system you and work toward that. Meanwhile, recognize that the greatest variable, by far, are your speakers. Look at Dali, Harbeth, Quad, and Gradient for speakers with superb linearity. They are all within your price range. At the appropriate price point, and especially used, they will blow away BW. They all have different characters. There are others, too. Anyway, that's the thing -- keep the electronics you have and upgrade your main speakers. Deal with your room, if you can. THEN start looking at electronics. Source first, then amplifier (why? Please, no one flame me, but the fact is that most high-end solid state amplifiers really are about as good as it gets and the differences are nuanced; not so with speakers!) jmourik;143648 Wrote: I always forget the model number! I say, find a pair of speakers you like, get them, and then find stuff that works well with those speakers. I agree that the speakers have the most character, in most systems, but still reiterate my main post: find a system that you really like. Please ignore totally what you currently have and how sane any upgrade path may seem before you start - that's just a detail. Get to a dealer, and I recommend you to try several, as a SET-loving dealer is unlikely to stock heavyweight Krells, and vice versa. Play music you like and settle on a system that you would really like to own and listen to daily. Once you know your true path (Grasshopper), you can start to work out the detail of how you're actually going to get there with the system you currently have and the spare cash you can hide from the wife. But make sure you have a goal, or all you'll do is upgrade for ever. In terms of your specific dilemma, I suspect you may be proposing a slightly mismatched system. A $2k multichannel amp is unlikely to be an ideal match with a $5k serious speaker, and the fact that you can't audition it also gives me cause for concern. I know the BWs and know that they respond well to very serious amps - I last heard them with huge Chords, and they sounded great (although the system was not the way I'd spend that much cash!) - so be careful. However, I am not familiar with these amps. Given how much you seem willing to spend, you should be able to get a really wonderful system. The last thing you want to do is buy an amp then spend loads on huge speakers and then be unhappy until you've spent several times that on the amp you need to drive them to your satisfaction! Audio reproduction is only as good as its weakest link, so deciding what to upgrade depends on which component is most limiting your current system. In my own systems over the decades, speaker upgrades have made the most obvious improvements. The magnitude of difference between various speakers seems to be much greater than the difference between other components. And without excellent speakers, you may not be able to notice the more subtle improvements produced by upgrading other components. My advice is the same to anyone: find a complete system that you just fall in love with, and work towards that. If you just audition one component at a time, you will never stop upgrading. There are huge differences between systems, so listen to as many as you can, and you will find one that really works *for you*. This does not have to cost five figures, but will probably cost well into four. Once you have your ultimate, work out a plan as to how you can achieve it in affordable steps. I fell in love with the low-power valve amp high-efficiency speaker sound 'philosophy', as expounded by Living Voice, Audio Note and others, and have moved through budget Audio Innovations amps and Snell speakers to what I have now - all steps were logical, affordable and sounded great. I can't see me upgrading my main system for many years now (except maybe a Transporter...), as it sounds amazing - better than much of what I hear at hi-fi shows, despite being a fraction of the price of many.
