This gave me an endless supply of new toys to test, tinker with -- and sometimes -- buy, at dealer cost. It was a fun job for a while, but ultimately, I soured on the hobby by making it my vocation and my interest in audio fizzled. There was even a period when my system, packed in boxes, sat dormant for 4-5 years. Like you, there was a spark that re-ignited my interest. For me, it was home theater. That, in turn, pointed out the need to update a system that had earned vintage equipment status. And so about two years ago, I got the hifi bug again. Since then, my system has been constantly evolving, with components of my old system comprising a smaller and smaller percentage of my active equipment list. I think the SB and new DAC have helped close the loop on upgrading my digital front end... for the moment ;-). A few more relatively minor investments remain, and then I'll be cured of upgrade-itis for a while. At which point, I'm sure I'll reapportion those available funds to another hobby! -- Videodrome Videodrome's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11727 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36011 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Ratso: I'm not familiar with the moonlab, but I recently went down a similar path as you and wound up adopting a similar buying strategy: outboard DAC, not insanely priced, hopefully one touted to be a giant killer -- or at least, would give the Lavry and Benchmark a run for the money. I wound up with the $300 Musiland MD-10 purchased from Pacific Valve (I believe they carry LITE DACs as well). Like you, I was a little skeptical it would be clearly, demonstrably better than what I had. In the end, it was, and I have been very pleased with the purchase and am running the digital outputs of both my SB and CD player to it. Anyway, this is a roundabout way of trying to convince you that you made a good choice and to trust your ears. You don't have to spend $1,000+ these days to get a good DAC. One more thing, if your DAC is anything like mine, it will benefit by 50-100 hours of burn in. -- Videodrome Videodrome's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11727 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36011 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I think being an audiophile, intrinsicly, is forever seeking for a better sound -- which is entirely subjective and personal. If you enjoy a DAC, speaker, wire, or whatever, and it makes you happier listening and owning it...it is good. Often the search is never ending (maybe standing still for a few years now and again).. -- then we get into an upgrade phase again. The SB has ignited one of these in the last year for me. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] god another DAC thread...
sorry. maybe this would be helpful. i have kinda been wondering for a while if getting a DAC would actually improve my sound or if it would just be one of those thing that you plug in and go well i THINK i hear a difference (like my 'upgraded' power supply). So i started looking at some of the cheaper DAC's out there, which reviewers have been comparing to ones costing much more like the LITE-AH. And i finally settled on moodlab's Concept - good reviews, small, stylish, and at $200 what the hell? My gear (and my ear) are not audiophile quality, but they're not crap either - i power a mid priced denon AV reciever through Infiniti IL 50's. I plan on building a mid priced 2 channel reference system as soon as possible. So what do i think? I listened to 'a thousand beautiful things' from annie lennox' bare cd through my SB3. I played it back to back with DAC on and off to get an A/B comparison. This song features a smooth clear recording, annie's beautiful voice and a sudden blast of bass that shakes my house at the start through the 50's powered subs. I was suprised that my first impression of the DAC was it actually tamed out that bass blast some. But as the sound went on, i found the bass more integrated and smooth in the song. I could also hear more detail in the background including a synthesized wind at the end of the first verse i had never noticed before. Was i just listening harder? Or making it up to justify my purchase? No, i think i can say it clearly made an audible difference. Enough to be happy with my purchase? Yes, $200 well spent i think. Would i be happy if it was $1200 like the DAC's this one is compared to in some reviews? NO. -- ratso ratso's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11493 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36011 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
