The vast majority (if not all) fs.com products are registered for use in
Australia. Whether or not the C-Tick should be printed on a module that goes
inside a device can only be answered by paying for the standard
. (And no thank you, the
DRM that comes with AS/NZS standards makes them unusable. Standards should be
free.)

If you ever have a question about whether a product is registered & sold by a
responsible supplier in Australia or New Zealand (it's a harmonised system),
just check with ERAC . For fs.com, you can
search on E7676 & you'll find every conceivable model of transceiver, direct
attach cable, media converter, ethernet switch, etc. here.

Cheers,

Jon
(registered responsible supplier E5378)

Re: [AusNOG] Transceiver for dark fiber.

2021-08-16 Thread Christopher Hawker
The problem with FS.com transceivers (or a lot of their products for that
matter) is that they do not bear the ACMA C-Tick or RCM as required for
certification and use in Australia.

Looking at the FS.com website, the RCM compliance certificate
(https://img-en.fs.com/includes/templates/fiberstore/images/img/PDF/rcm-authen.pdf)
is for the S3900 24-Port L2 Managed Switch, and the C-Tick certificate
(https://img-en.fs.com/includes/templates/fiberstore/images/img/PDF/ctick-authen.pdf)
is for the S3900-24T4S, S3900-24F4S and S3900-48T4S switches.

You may pay a premium for going original, however you're guaranteed the support
and backing from Cisco if anything goes wrong.

Re: [AusNOG] Transceiver for dark fiber.

2021-08-16 Thread DaZZa
hey Alex

I've used fs.com tranceivers extensively, as others have said, and as
long as you get them coded correctly (specify your vendor when
ordering), they're pretty good.

With Vocus, I have found that the stated length of the DF link is
often - well, understated. So your 11k link could quite likely end up
being 12 or 13 (I had one which was listed in all Vocus' documentation
and testing reports as 37k's - could not, for the life of me, get a
10Gb-ER tranceiver working on the link with an acceptable loss - had
to go to a ZR to bring the link up).

I'd recommend you stick ER tranceivers in this link (good for up to
40k's) - and probably go 1550nm rather than 1310. FS has heaps of
them, and they're not anywhere near as expensive as genuine Cisco
ones. You can try a pair of LR's for shits and giggles (they're only
about $40 each), but I'd almost bet they won't work unless you're very
luck with the number of joints in the link and the insertion loss
levels.

You *might* need a 3dB attenuator on each end - but they'll sell you
those too - and if your receive power isn't above the limit, you can
get away with removing it.

One thing to note is that if you use a non-genuine transceiver and
have to log a TAC case, Cisco will immediately tell you so sod off
when you log it because it's not "supported" - so it comestimes pays
to keep a genuine one on hand to swap into the switch in case you have
an issue - but if it's only one link, it's debatable if it's worth
doing that - keep a couple of spare FS ones in case they go bad.

D

P.S. I am not affiliated in any way with fs.com - just a satisified customer.

Yes our length is probably going to be a touch over 20km from Vocus so we used
the 40km HP compatible optics and an attenuator

Also I am unsure who you are using but make sure you ask how they are going to
hand it off

Be cautious of using long range transceivers (LR) for short range duties - you
are pointing a very energetic LASER / LED towards a receiver that is expecting
a lot of energy to be lost before arrival.
Transceivers do have a minimum length, or they will require an attenuator.

for eg:
https://www.fs.com/au/products/48813.html
Notice: When the long reach transceiver is used in short distance transmission,
please matched with appropriate attenuator according to the table.

Hi Alex,
I've used plenty of FS.com transceivers.
For a 1G link, you might get away with a 10km optic, but better chances with

For a 10G link, again you might get away with a 10km, but a 40km doesn't cost
much more -

Thanks all

FS certainly pops up top of Google Foo good SOE.

Will give them a go with the 40km units. Cheap really compared to the service
cost. Good to hear some positive reports.

Hi Alex,
I've used plenty of FS.com transceivers.
For a 1G link, you might get away with a 10km optic, but better chances with

For a 10G link, again you might get away with a 10km, but a 40km doesn't cost
much more -

Re: [AusNOG] Transceiver for dark fiber.

2021-08-16 Thread Ross Fawcett
We’ve used Fiberstore at numerous locations, no failures as yet, but given the
low price point we always have customers keep spares on site.

https://www.fs.com/

The biggest thing we have found is getting the right module suited to the
equipment at either end. E.g. modules that have the appropriate firmware coded
for say HP if you are using HP switching etc.

I’m also partial to BiDi transceivers, though they do have a slightly higher
cost, you can get away with a single strand (lower cost rental on the fibre),
or turn an existing duplex into say 2x 10gbit.
