With the help of a network specialist we were able to diagnose this problem and
correct it. It turned out to be a setting on the Cisco VPN. With the client
open, choose Options, uncheck 'Stateful Firewall (Always On)'. This has
resolved the problem on our end. I just wanted to update the log in case
someone else runs into this same issue.

Yes, I am able to ping the server and other machines from the laptop.
An additional thing that I found today, if I log onto the laptop using
my id I receive the same error. The only variable that I can come up
with is that these laptops are all Dell Vostros rather that the
Latitudes that we have in the office. I cannot believe that this has
anything to do with the issue, but it is rather odd.
Thank you.
