n the book, Azores, Nine Islands, it talks about Rodas or Casas da
Roda, where a baby could be left anonymously, much as we now have
safe houses in the United States, when someone gives up a baby. It
states that most municipalities in the second half of the 19th century
had these places. The baby was then raised by a nannie to age 7 years,
paid by the government. Having a registry of nannies was begun during
 the 16th century.

Does anyone know of this custom? Did the registries record the babies
somehow, or were they just keeping track of the nannies? If the babies
were anonymous, that meant they weren't baptised or given names? The
book says that the total surpassed 1,000 babies (probably a total of
all the municipalities, though it does not say) that were cared for in
this way in 1858. In 1879 this strategy was abandoned and the mothers
were paid to keep and care for the children. After this, there were
many fewer babies abandoned. That must have been such a terrible
situation for families, no wonder they left the Islands.

That is a lot of children to not be accounted for, so I wonder if
there was some record or if anyone knows.

 Char
Each baby was registered, baptized, and given a name. In some of the larger
churches is there is actually a separate book for Expostos.

Sam,

They are ms word (.doc) files within zip files. You need to use PKunzip,
winzip or winRAR to open them. Most of the programs are free for at least a
trial period.

Once you open them in MS Word, you can do a search for names.

 Kathy,

This is interesting. I followed the link and it states it is the first
volume of a series. I am assuming this volume covers the Abreu families.
Are other volumes coming and do they relate to other surnames or families?

2009-04-03 Thread fujigen

Hi Christine,

Ignes Pereira Macedo and Francisco Costa Goulart are also my 5th great-
grandparents on my grandmother's side. My line is from their daughter
Rita Inacia Macedo who is Catharina sister. Like you, I also can't
find anything about Francisco or Apolonia.

Francisco Costa Goulart is also on my grandfathers line, when he was
married to Catherina Dias Machado. Their daughter Maria Gularte
married Manuel Costa Medeiros in Candelaria in 1721.

I'm also interested in the Brazil information. I'm just starting my
Step-Dad's family. His mother Ana Jesus was born in Brazil and moved
with her parents Antonio Silveira Machado and Ana Jesus to
Ribeirinha,Terceira. Ana married Antone Machado Coelho in Ribeirinha
before they immigrated to California.I have very little
information because my dad's mother died when he was a young boy.

There's something weird with this John. Shirley and I talked about this
the other day.

Shirley did find a record on 7 Oct 1586 for a Bart. Rodrigues whoever and
an Anna in Nordeste. I believe she looked on that date because of what was in
Rodrigo Rodrigues (not that any book will be 100% accurate). However, when
Shirley pulled the film, most of that record has that wash put over it, so when
it was filmed, it became all blacked out. She sent an email to Eliseu to see
if he had any time on his next visit to the Biblioteca to view the actual book
to see what it really says. It sounds like there are two Barts married to two
Annas. I'm not sure, but this info might also be in Familias Antigas de
Povoacao. I think it's good to go to the actual source, so it will be good to
see what Shirley finds off of the original record from the date you gave.

Cheri

That Wash, is just a chemical reaction of the ink and the paper acid. It
shows up black on the film, but the originals in the archives are perfectly
legible. Let me know what Shirley finds. I also left out some info. There were
notes about wills, deeds and bequests that confirmed the relationships of these
people. If shirley is interested I can give her this info.

Dolores,

My Great Grandparents are also from Sao Jorge and I have not been able to find
out anything on them either.  Not coming into this country or the children
being born.  Have not found anything yet on the Sao Jorge records yet either.
They just appeared in San Luis Obispo, San Jose, Oakland, Santa Clara and
Hanford.  It is a big mystery.  I'll keep searching maybe something will show
up sometime.  I am sure we all have some of the same stories about our Azorean
Relatives.  I thought your story about what your grand mother said was cute.

I understand your search.  My Great Grandparents from Sao Jorges, seem to have
spontaneously generated in 1880 onto Commercial Street in Boston with three
children.  No records before that of any of them anywhere-including the three
children that I'm about 99.9% sure were born in the US. I joke with
my family that we just materialized from the Gods and Royalty, like my
Grandmother always implied. Good Luck.  I work for Temple University's Library,
so I have access to a number of resources.  Let me know if you need any help-it
may be a long shot, but we may have it, or at least access to it.
