[AZORES-Genealogy] Translation help
I've been able to use various translation programs online to translate several articles found on my family in the Portuguese newspaper but this one doesn't seem to translate well. Hope someone can help. Can't tell who Antonio Borges married and who's son is who etc. Thank you. Consorciaram-se, o sr. Antonio Borges de 25 anos, natural da freguesia da Beira, ilha de S. [AZORES-Genealogy] Goncalves & Ferreira - Sao Jorge
Researching Domingos Goncalves (died before 1658) and his wife Ana Ferreira...both, most likely, from Calheta, Sao Jorge. Their son is Antonio Goncalves Ferreira who married Barbara Vieira on Nov.25, 1658 in Calheta, Sao Jorge. Also, I have noticed that it seems that families would have a child named, say Manuel, then perhaps that child died young and the parents would have another child and name him Manuel alsoI have noted this a few times in my research...was this a common practice or are they mistakes? Calvena, From my research the giving of a deceased child's name to a later born child was common. I believe it was considered as honoring the deceased child as well as the prior relative he was named after. Calvena, Yes, in the case of male children, if the first Manuel died, and another male was born, they could name him Manuel. In the later time period records (latter 1800s), you will see it as "Manuel, third of the name" so you know that there were 2 other Manuels born before. In the time period you are searching, you generally don't see that. My mother had a sister HELEN born 24 June 1910. She died 25 July 1910. My mother, Helen, was born 18 March 1915. There were two boys born between the two Helens.
