I found them on the 1870 census in the Half Moon Bay area. The interesting thing was that living close by was the family of Antonio Corcut 51 years old, wife Angelina (middle initial L? 44 years old) both born Portugal, and children Rena C (16 years old born Portugal) and Frank (7 years old born Mass.). Your Manuel Baptist was 33 but his wife Angelina was 19--could the nearby Corcuts have been her parents? Manuel and Angelina were born Portugal but the listed children were born in Calif. Their names and ages were: William, 4; Mary 2; Angeline can't quite make out, maybe 5 months. This is from the census images at Ancestry.com. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Victoria (Espirito Santa/Vila Nova - Terceira) and Mendes (Sao Jorge(Doze Ribeiras)
Cheri, Thank you VERY MUCH. Your help and insight is most appreciated. My cousin and I are so excited to learn more about our Portuguese roots. In fact, we are planning a trip to the Azores next year. Lucky for me, she's a travel agent! Again, obrigada! You're have to figure out if he's a John (Joao with the tilde (~) above the a) or a George (Jorge). The Francisca/Francis is the same person. It's just people spelling it incorrectly. Francisca is the Portuguese spelling and the English translation would be Francis. I'm guessing that your Francia Souza Mendes would be Francisco Souza Mendes and your Cansicas Roza Mendes could be Conceicao Roza Mendes or Roza Conceicao Mendes. I'm unsure on the Cansicas misspelling. Perhaps others have ideas. Since you have the freguesia (village) and the birth dates, you can write to the archive in Angra (on Terceira) to obtain a copy of their baptism record. Well, once you figure out if your guy is a Joao or a Jorge, that is. The baptisms from that time period will list the parents and grandparents of the baby. From there you can use the microfilm. [AZORES-Genealogy] Manuel Baptist
I have a Manuel Baptist as a decendent, his wife was Perpetual and they had a daughter named Rosalina. They were from Santo Antão do Topo. Rosalina married Manuel De Avila Brasil (Brazil) a decendent of mine, on Jan. 11, 1897. I don't know if there is a connection, but for what its worth. Interesting question. I will check with my mom, matriarch of the family, to confirm Sao Jorge or Teceira. [AZORES-Genealogy] Ultimo filho
Nancy, An added note. All three Manoels on that image use the term ultimo referring to the months, not the babies. Arline Do you have a date of birth for your Manuel Baptiste from Topo...I'm looking for 2 different Manuel Baptistas from Topoone from around 1830 and 1 from 1878.do you have Manuels parents names? [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Ultimo filho
Dear Arline, Thank you for clarifying that.I didn't look in Dec. for Maria Emilia's obit.I will though because I can't find any other births to them and Antonio married my grandmother in the US in 1888so something happened during that 10 year span.I found a Manuel Baptista coming into New Bedford in 1886he was born Jan. 1878 and came here at 8 years old..I think it's Antonio's son but in the census that I found this information he was a border and 20 years old already. I can't find Antonio coming to this country or where he and his new family were in 1900.I'll keep searching.this mystery.I thought maybe his first wife came to this country but I can't find her either. Best regards, Nancy To: Azores@googlegroups.com Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ultimo filho Date: Fri, 8 May 2009 18:56:08 -0400 From: sarab...@aol.com Dear Nancy, I looked at the baptism record of Manoel, 1878, image 4. The baby was being baptized in February but was born LAST December. It says Decembro ultimo. Of course there is no comma after ultimo so the next word is filho causing the confusion. He is not the last child, just a legitimate child born last December. Arline Silveira in Grover Beach, CA Hi Cheri, I thought that perhaps if the mother died in childbirth that it was clearly the final progeny of that couple. The one for Manuel is Topo Baptisms 1878 page 4Jose son of Antonio Teixeira Baptista and Maria Emilia. Nancy A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above.
