[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Furtado's of San Mateo County

2009-05-25 Thread Besotes
Hello Mary and thank you for your email reply. I found Anibal Furtado (d 1903)
buried with his wife Louisa (d 1925) in the IOOF cemetery in Half Moon Bay, CA,
per www.findagrave.com along with three son's with one grave marker: Peter,
Manuel F. and John.

I'm not sure if they're any relation to the Furtado's I'm seeking. I only have
one name from 1844, Anne Furtado. All these men were born after her (1897,
1891, and 1879) as well as the father who was born, per his cemetary marker in
1849.

Do you have any knowledge of Spanish Town, CA? Is it still an actual town? I
see they have their own Historical Society, yet I've been unsuccessful to reach
anyone my email (all emails come back undeliverable) and no return phone calls.

Do you by chance know what newspapers were in that area in 1844?

The Spanish Town Historical Society has a cute passage about the Portuguese of
the area:

http://www.spanishtownhs.org/about_shs.php

This is a portion of the text - the 6th paragraph down:

"The Portuguese immigration began in 1860 with whalers, dairymen and farmers
settling on the Coast. In 1878 the wife of Rufus Hatch (who operated a sawmill
in Purissma Canyon and sold lumber in town) noted in her diary that the
Portuguese settlers were putting on a strange celebration - probably the first
enactment here of the Chamarita, a folk festival that has become an annual
all-community affair in Half Moon Bay. So the Spanish families associated with
the Anglo-Americans, the Portuguese arrived and were accepted and, in turn,
another wave of newcomers came from Italy to become and important part of Half
Moon Bay's population."

Do you have any suggestions on researching the Half Moon Bay - Spanish Town
area?

Thank you,
. Robin Borba Besotes .

Researching: Bettencourt, Borba, Barbe, Da Rosa, Jacinto, Rodrigues, Mattos
California Towns: Newman, Turlock, Crowslanding, San Jose, San Juan, Tres
Penos, Hollister, Watsonville, Pacific Grove

I have an interest in the Half Moon Bay area.

On Ancestry.com I just checked out Peter Furtado and found in the Voter
Registrations of November 1900 a Peter Furtado, age 21, and an Anibal Joseph
Furtado, age 52, were registered on consecutive affidavits (Peter #21, Anibal
#22). That might or might not mean they registered at the same time and might
or might not mean they were related. Their addresses were both given as simply
"Half Moon Bay" but their precinct was "Purissima", which is just a bit south
of Half Moon Bay.

Furtado is/was not a very common name in the Half Moon Bay area.

[AZORES-Genealogy] RAPOSOS , MACHADOS and LEITES from Vila de Nordeste, São Miguel

2009-05-25 Thread Lufox

I'm new at this list and I tried to read all the messages posted in
the past but there are too many!I
Does anyonw knows how to get help to find Christening and Marriage
data at the Azores? My great-grandfather, MANUEL RAPOSO DOS SANTOS,
came to Brazil (haven't found any reference of how and when, yet) and
married my brazilian great-grandmohter in Niterói - a town near Rio de
Janeiro, where I live. He was from VILA DE NORDESTE, NORDESTE, ILHA DE
SÃO MIGUEL. His parents were ANTÓNIO RAPOSO DOS SANTOS and
BARBARA LEITE MACHADO DOS SANTOS and he was born around 1840, 1841 -
according to his death certificate he died when he was 56, on May,
25th.1897. I know the records of Christenings from that period must
already be at Ponta Delgada, for its over 100 years anda I wrote the
chief of the Public Library and she said they would help but never
wrote back.
1- Do you people, since you have much more experience, think I should
keep on insisting?
2- Do any of you know of someone in Azores who may be interested in
exchanging information? I presently have all of my family on records
and I am willing to help searching records on Librarys and other
places here in Rio de Janeiro.
3- Is there another way to reserach (I already ordered the LDS mfs
from Nordeste, Azores) without visiting Azores? I plan to go someday
but right now is impossible.,.
If any of you need help translating documents from Portuguese to
English I am at you disposal.
Thank you so much for you help

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: RAPOSOS , MACHADOS and LEITES f rom Vila de Nordeste, São Miguel

2009-05-25 Thread Cheri Mello
HI Lufox,

Since you have the 3 vital pieces: the name of Manuel Raposo dos Santos,
that he was from Nordeste, born to Antonio Raposo dos Santos and Barbara
Leite Machado in 1840-41, you need to search the film ( # 1438017 ) for
every Manuel born to Antonio and Barbara until you find him.

Your questions:
1) Yes, the archives do hold the records from the 1840s, but they don't
search for you. They may look for a range, but I wouldn't insist. It may
make it worse for the rest of us.

2) Most of us on this list are west of the Azores (somewhere in North
America), although we have other members. Some are in the Azores, New
Zealand, and I forget where else I've seen people say where they live.

3) The only way to research for Nordeste at this time is to go to the
archives in Ponta Delgada or order the microfilm. Someday, the Center for
Knowledge of the Azores (CCA) will put the records online. However, they
don't publish I time line for putting the records online or in what order,
so we don't when. Sao Jorge island is almost complete. That island took
about 2 years to put online, I believe.

Hope this helps!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Flores research

2009-05-25 Thread "E" Sharp

Dear Listers,

I am researching a Maria Pedro b. abt. 1891 probably in Sao Miguel. I
believe her mother might be Maria da Gloria. I am told she was
adopted at birth by a Pedro family from Flores, but I am wondering if
Maria da Gloria married an Antonio Pedro (father's name listed on
death record) after the birth of Maria and after 1891. Does anyone
have any of these people in their Flores research. I was told this
Antonio Pedro was an architect and once visited Philadelphia. I am
not sure where in Flores they lived but Fajazinha rings a bell. (I
just remember it was a strange sounding name.)

Thank you.

2009-05-25 Thread Cheri Mello
Betty,

Order the record from your FHC (Family History Center). It's film # 1330510,
on Item 1. Make sure you use the Portuguese spelling of Sao Roque though.

Some Pico records are online though the University of Minho web site, I
think. I don't research Pico, but the people who do will let you know if
they are online. They are not on the CCA web site yet.
