[AZORES-Genealogy] Sao Mateus, island of Pico?
Does anyone have information on the town of Sao Mateus, St. Matthews, on the island of Pico? That is where my great-grandfather, Antonio Nunes, was born in 1840. He came to the U.S. in 1860. I am hoping to visit the town where he was born sometime in 2011 when I visit the mainland of Portugal and two of the islands (Faial and Pico). Thank you for any info you can provide. The mother-church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It was built in the 20th century, replacing the old church that was in ruins. The architectural setting of Largo General Lacerda Machado square, built in the 17th and 18th centuries, is quite worth the visit. Located on the island’s central plateau, Lagoa do Paul is part of a nucleus of small lagoons surrounded by primitive vegetation of Pico Island. Mistério de São João is covered in dense forest, originating from marine eruption which joined the island. Furna da Malha, which is around 2 meters long, is a curious geological phenomenon. In Matos Souto park, near Piedade parish, covered in rare tree species, is the head-office of the Nature Conservation Services of the Autonomous Region of the Azores. In this municipality, our visitors find a pleasant and comfortable tourist village, Aldeia da Fonte, located in Silveira, the parish of Lajes, surrounded by trees, which offer its inhabitants comforting tranquility in a dream cenario. Any relation to Manuel F. Madruga, b. Feb 15, 1910 who died in Modesto, CA in 1991? He married Mary Affonso Dias b. Sept 3, 1920 in NIcasio, CA ( That is my Affonso line from Riberia Seca,Sao Jorge) His daughter Eleanor Madruga, b Nov 20, 1945, died in California also in 1999... Hi Pat, I have not been active lately on the Azores Group but when I saw your message about Silveria a town in Pico I wanted to let you know that I know a Becky Madruga whos relatives are from that town and we are suppose to be related to her. We have not found the exact connection because I have not completed that part of my genealogy yet. We have the same relative name but I have not yet confirmed it is the same as her relative. Lisa, it translates as "Fraternity of the Holy Christ" men and women. This group is derived from the Church of Santo Cristo (Holy Christ). They normally get together for prayer or charitable works. My aunt in Fall River belonged to it and her obituary said the same thing. Hi Carlos, I am a few Sodres from Graciosa as well. I have a Isabel Sodre who married Manuel Correia de Mello on 12 Nov 1690 in Santa Cruz, Graciosa. Her parents were Francisco Nunes and Isabel Sodre. I also have a Diogo Vaz Sodre who married Biolonaja da Cunha. His parents were Vasco Gil Sodre and Beatriz Goncalves da Silva. There is also a Catharina Luis Sodre who was married to Joao Pais Coelho. Her parents were Francisco Dias Pombal and Maria Luis. Another is Pedro de Conde Sodre. He was married to Catharina da Souza. Their son was Joao de Souza Netto, born abt. 1684 in Nossa Senhora Luz, Graciosa. Let me know is there are any connections. I believe it is one of the society, like the I.D.E.S. in California. My Portuguese is not real good but I believe it is the Emigrates of Saint Christ. Now "de" could mean "the". I am not sure but you might check where she lived at because that group still might be around. Most of the Society have been around for years and year. I live in CA, in a small town Santa Cruz and we have several of groups like this and my great-grandparent help start some of these groups and like always you get involved at a young age. Most of the Society deal with "Festa" from the old country. I have an Amelia Marshall in my husband's line. The name was Machado originally. She died in Boston 1906. I don't know if she had any sisters. She came from Sao Miguel and had several children, One was Domingos Moniz Machado and his bro, Clement Marshall. Clement was naturalized and changed from Machado to Marshall. Domingos always kept the Moniz Machado. I have not found the other syblings. I didn't think there would be a connection, but you never know. Hello, I was re- reading my gggrandmother's obit. and I came across something I need some information on. It stated that she was a member of the " irmandade de santa christo ". Does any one know what that is??? or could someone translate it for me? I would appreciate any help I receive.
