[AZORES-Genealogy] Returning to the Azores Passports
I have a picture of my great great grandfather, Jose da Costa, which has always been strange to me because it is a professional portrait, but it stands alone. There is no matching one of his wife, none of his children, and it looks like it was taken between the 1930 and 1950? I know that's a broad range. Did people return to the island (in this case, Sao Miguel) for funerals, or for anything? I know that some did but was this common? Is it possible that this is a passport photo that he had taken when returning to the island for a funeral? Jesse That does really look like a passport photo. If so and he went back between 1930-50 and he WAS an American cititizen by then, he would have to have had a passport. Those have been filmed by the LDS (Mormon) Church. There are indexes that have been filmed and also the actual passpports. Go to FamilySearch.org and search the Family History Card Catalog. Jose was born 3 Jun 1890 in Cabuoco, Sao Miguel to Manuel da Costa and Maria da Conceicao Medeiros. He had an older brother, Manuel (1885), married to Maria Rozaria. He married Maria de Jesus Correia Fontes 13 Sep 1911 in Santa Cruz, Lagoa, SM. Their children were Antone, Mary, Ida, Joseph, Elsie, and Edward. Jose and Maria arrived in America March 1912, which I have the document for. I think this picture you have might have been taken for his Naturalization papers. I know my relative who naturalized in 1933 has such a picture on his Naturalization papers. I believe this is his naturalization records index info: No. 5710860 Jose Costa, 139 Merchant St., Fall River, MA b. 6/3/1890 Certificate issued 4/12/1943 Boston MA Petition # 250888 No. below Pet. # 3506318 Is this him? As far as not many pictures of him in US, some of my relatives did not have any/many pictures taken of them in US although I have pictures of them from the overseas and then there were some were even born here. I think the family could not afford studio sitting or even a home camera. If you order his Naturalization papers, it might answer your question. Maybe he did not go back to his birthplace. Carlos, Did you ever come accross the names of Capitão-Mor Braz de Oliveira Arruda, born in Itacurussá-RJ circa 1768 and married to Alda Maria Leme Nogueira, daughter of Capitão-Mor Hilario Gomes Nogueira? They are among the founders of Bananal, São Paulo. Braz is said to be the son of José Antonio de Oliveira and Ana Maria de Jesus, but there's nothing beyond that. From what I can find my rapoza's wife was Mary or Maria Dos Rosario. My great
grandfather, Francisco Rapoza, has listed on his ssdi as his mother's last
name as Galante. But I found her passport on the BYU site along with my
Joao Rapoza as Dos Rosario. They immigrated from Lagoa in 1883 to Hawaii.I am
truely not sure what her last name was

My Uncle once told me that Joao was apparently very cruel especially to
animals, and Maria was raising some horses or involved in horses in Hawaii, and

Hello.
I am interested in learning more about this line of ancestry, the Raposo. Was
there a different way that your ancestors spelled that last name? my paternal
Grandmother's Grandfather was Joao Rapoza, but I found that somewhere along the
way the spelling has been changed to Raposo, Raposa, Repoza, Repozo, Reposa.
I know that my Ggg grandfather, Joao, immigrated to Hawaii from the Azores.
Any information on the Raposo last name would be appreciated.
In this particular ancestrial lineage I have the following surnames:
Arruda, Cabral, Costa, DeCosta,DeLima,Pereira,Botelho,Crua,Andrade,Carvalho,Dos
Rosario,Mederios, etc.
Any help on researching this line would be much appreciated.

My dear friend and possibly cousin (never made the connection), Elizabeth
McDonald had sent me a couple of years ago her family time line. I'm not sure
if she is on this group any longer, but she goes back to Jose Raposo m.
Francisca Ignacia Pereira (daughter of Jose-Jacintho Pereira and Maria Augusta)
from Maia, Sao Miguel abt. 1847. Two children brought down 17 grandchildren.
Son, Joao Raposo-Pereira m. Francisca-Julia da Ponte Ramalho and daughter,
Rosa-Ignacia da Conceicao m. Manoel Raposo- Pereira (kept it in the family).
Maybe there is a connection coming down to those Raposo's.

Jose died also in Desterro in 23/ja/1803 2- Manoel Arruda Jr. born in 4/jan/1736 in Vera Cruz, Ponta Delgada, Ilha Sao Miguel, Acores, Portugal, and had another child Arruda.
