[AZORES-Genealogy] Henriques family of Flores Island

2010-04-01 Thread James Henriques
Hello Cheri,

I am researching my father's side of the family.  His name was Mauricio
Rodrigues Henriques.  He was actually born in Rhode Island in
1931 (Maurice Rogers Henriques on birth certificate) but grew up from the age
of 2 to 17 in the freguesia of Mosteiro (Mosteiros).  His father, José
Rodrigues Henriques, was also from Mosteiro as was his mother,
Maria Jesus Mancebo born in 1885.  Her father, José Rodrigues Mancebo was also
from Mosteiro.  The wedding and baptismal records that I've reviewed (from
Centro de Conhecimento dos Açores) to get this information was helpful but hard
to read due to the handwriting.  I  have not yet tracked down the information
on my grandfather from Centro de Conhecimento dos Açores.

You mentioned in your last message (below) that some list members, who are
Flores researchers, have a Flores marriage book.  I would like to get in touch
with these individuals, or any researchers for Flores, and obtain information
from any resources available.  Anyone that would like to contact me directly at
my personal e-mail can do so at  sacja...@yahoo.com

Any other resources for Flores that you or anyone else can provide to me would
be very much appreciated.

Obrigado,

James Henriques

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] odd records

2010-04-01 Thread Margaret Vicente
Hi it says,

Antonio is the natural son of Anna Victorina Reis, *widow* of Joao Silveira
etc. Maternal grandson of Jorge Silveira and Marianna do Rozario.

The record clearly indicates Antonio is of "unknown" father, her husband is
deceased and if the child were his it would say "posthumus" child of Joao
Silveira.

Another indicator is the word "natural" versus "legitimate"

Hope this helps.

Margaret Vicente.

According to my databases in Vila Nova, Terceira, there were no Joao Diniz born

Joao, son of

Diniz, Francisco Machado

Emilia Rosa

Joao, son of

Diniz, Francisco Borges

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Beware of trapping Portuguese names: useful tips

For those that don't know Portuguese first names, and particularly, XV-XIX
centuries names, I think it's useful to select some curiosities:

Ventura = can be a female name (= "venture, happiness, fortune") or a male
(short for Boaventura, Saint Bonaventura, a canonized Franciscan friar)
Gracia = can be a female name (= "grace", from Latin Gratia, and sometimes
synonym of Engracia, from "in gratia"), but also a male name, an older
variation of Garcia (originally a common Iberic first name, turned into a
patronymic surname). The same phonetic variation is found in pairs
Barcelos/Bracelos, Curvelo/Cruvelo/Curuvelo/Coruvelo/Corvelo,
Carvalho/Cravalho, Cardoso/Cradoso. Other possible variants: Rosario/Rosairo,
Beatriz/Brites/Breitiz/Breatiz, -is, Iria/Hiria/Eiria/Hyria, Gomes/Guomes,
Gaspar/Guaspar, Gabriel/Graviel/Garaviel/Grabiel.

There's a lot of written variations of all names, without etymological
explanation. We can found Ascensao/Ascençao/Assensao, the correct being
Ascensao (with tilde). We can foun "sinco" instead of "cinco"; "ceis" instead
of "seis"; "sento" instead of "cento"; Roxa/Rocha, Machado/Maxado. Sometimes we
can found the variaton in the same register. I prefer to standardized all these
names when put them into my database, to prevent a crazy difficulty in
research. For example, Felipe can be with F or Ph; e or i; L or LL; i or y; P
or PP = 2 x 2x 2x2x2 = 32 variants!

2010-04-01 Thread Marek Delacroix

Cheri...I am at a stand still trying to figure out where my great great
grandparents (maternal) came from.  I know that my gg grandpa was born on
Flores..(says so on his grave marker)..no idea about his wife.  But,  my family
all came from Azores to mine for gold and ended-up in Siskiyou County, CA where
they did operate a mining claim or two.  I know that my great grandfather's
brother was shipwrecked near Seattle, Washington (Joao de Avila Brasil) on his
way to America and that he spent a few months on an island around Seattle with
the natives.  So I am beginning to wonder if perhaps my family came through
Angel Island near San Francisco.
Also, My gg grandmother's family just seem to have dropped off the face of the
earth.  I know she had a brother who registered for WWI...other than that there
are no indications of what happened to any of them, no marriage records, birth
or death records can be found.  Also the name has proved to be very difficult
"BRIO"  which apparently is Italian, it could have been Brito which apparently
there are a few on Flores...I haven't been able to find Flores records.  Thanks
for all the help...Marek

Marek,

Looks like there is an immigration port there.

Check the LDS catalog to see what was filmed.  The bigger ports for Azoreans
were on the east coast (Providence, Boston, New Bedford, New York) and then to
HI and I think somewhat to San Francisco.  But I've heard of a couple of
stories where they did come in through a lesser known port.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Beware of trapping Portuguese names: useful tips

2010-04-01 Thread Joao S. Lopes
For those that don't know Portuguese first names, and particularly, XV-XIX
centuries names, I think it's useful to select some curiosities:

Ventura = can be a female name (= "venture, happiness, fortune") or a male
(short for Boaventura, Saint Bonaventura, a canonized Franciscan friar)
Gracia = can be a female name (= "grace", from Latin Gratia, and sometimes
synonym of Engracia, from "in gratia"), but also a male name, an older
variation of Garcia (originally a common Iberic first name, turned into a
patronymic surname). The same phonetic variation is found in pairs
Barcelos/Bracelos, Curvelo/Cruvelo/Curuvelo/Coruvelo/Corvelo,
Carvalho/Cravalho, Cardoso/Cradoso. Other possible variants: Rosario/Rosairo,
Beatriz/Brites/Breitiz/Breatiz, -is, Iria/Hiria/Eiria/Hyria, Gomes/Guomes,
Gaspar/Guaspar, Gabriel/Graviel/Garaviel/Grabiel.

There's a lot of written variations of all names, without etymological
explanation. We can found Ascensao/Ascençao/Assensao, the correct being
Ascensao (with tilde). We can foun "sinco" instead of "cinco"; "ceis" instead
of "seis"; "sento" instead of "cento"; Roxa/Rocha, Machado/Maxado. Sometimes we
can found the variaton in the same register. I prefer to standardized all these
names when put them into my database, to prevent a crazy difficulty in
research. For example, Felipe can be with F or Ph; e or i; L or LL; i or y; P
or PP = 2 x 2x 2x2x2 = 32 variants!

little over, they might send back stamps (that's what the archive in Ponta

Hi Joyce,

I haven't sent for any in quite a while, but I think if you send $20 U.S.
dollars it will cover the certificate, cost of conversion to euros, and
postage.

Maybe someone who has written them in the past year will answer with what it
cost them.

Celeste,

The shiplist here of Jan 1908 shows brothers Jose and Jacinto Avila Areias
traveling to Hayward California to join friend Joao M Diniz.  They are from
Villa Nova, Terceira. It's in the Concelho of Praia da Vitoria. Good chance
that's where Joao is from.

and Mae as their first name here in the USA.  Also, I have seen Diniz spelled,
Deniz, Dinis, Denis and Dennis.
In any case, the Mary Deniz that is my friend's grandmother was married to
John (Joao) M. Deniz Machado.  This Mary used the name Mary Machado Deniz.
In 1914, in the Mt. St. Joseph Cemetery records, Mr. John M. Deniz Machado
purchased 4 graves and in one of them he buried his 10 month old son, Alexander
(Alex) Deniz Machado.
In the same records, Mae (Mammie Dolores) Rose was buried in 1929.
In 1934, Mary Machado Deniz (wife of John M. Deniz Machado) was buried.
In 1941, Frank Lewis (Rebello) was buried.  The funeral home from which he
was buried lists his wife as Mamie Lewis and his parents as Francisco Lewis
Rebello and Filomena Augusta Medeiros both from the Azores.
In the 1920 census, Mary was listed as divorced and had a son, Arthur L. who
was 20 years old; a son, John who was 18 years old and a daughter, Mamie M. who
was 16 years old.  The father of these children was listed as being born in the
Azores.
I am trying to find the birth place of John & Mary.  I have Azores on the
1920 census; however, I need, at least the island to begin searching for their
birth.
Does any of this information match the Mary Diniz you visited in Hayward?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: odd records

2010-04-01 Thread Marcosraposo
Cheri,

I'm a native speaker, so I might help if I know which expression in
Portuguese was used to mean "vulgar assault". The legal word for rape
in Portuguese is "estupro", but "violação" is also used.

As far as I know, 19th century portuguese priests would never inform
the father's name of someone born out of religious marriage, even if
the mother discloses who the father is.

As for the penalties imposed on adulterous men, there was a sex
scandal in Rio de Janeiro in 1808, when Brazil was part of the
Portuguese Empire: a certain Antonio José Pimentel was caught having
illicit sex with the wife of his partner - a rich man - and was
sentenced to exile in Angola. He did not actually get exiled, for the
husband in question died soon after, but the lady was indeed interned
in a convent for a number of years.

Marcos.

Even if a priest heard the act in confession, more then likely names would NOT
be mentioned.   You can confess the sin of infidelity without naming the person
with whom you are sinning .
