Res: Res: [AZORES-Genealogy] Men using maternal surnames....help with translation
Before 1800s, the regular Portuguese surname form (maternal+paternal) was not the standard form. We can find any combination: maternal+paternal, paternal+maternal, only paternal, only maternal, grandparents's surnames. There's usually surnames in honor to grandparents or uncles/aunts. It's very common to repeat the name of grandmothers, for example. For example, I have an ancestor Apolonia Dias Pereira in Sao Roque/Pico, and she had many granddaughters Apolonia Dias Pereira, who had homonym granddaughters, making this name cross many generations intact. After 1800s there's very few examples of children receiving godparents' surnames. Joao S Lopes De: Joao S. RE: Res: Res: [AZORES-Genealogy] Men using maternal surnames....help with translation
Thanks Joao for all of the information.I'm always amazed when you bring forth these tidbits of information like that about Joana's daughter Isabel having a baby out of wedlock then marrying her father's (Antonio was her father?) brother 5 years later. How do you even remember that you have this information? Did the son, Jose, take his new fathers name or use that of his mother? I'd like to research the Abreu family in Flamengos since I had no idea I had Fayal ancestors and now this Quadros line on Sao Jorge! I appreciate your help these last few years since your information about my Baptista family brought forth many, many discoveries with the help of Arline and others! Dear Thom: I am sure you must know that he is the great grandfather of Iris Cabral. That line goes way back to João de Oliveira and Ana Gonsalves of Feteiras, probably married around 1625. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Casa da Maria de Deus Bed and breakfast
Wow! George, this was a church that was associated with the Mae de Deus orphanage my aunt spent quite a few years in just down the hill and I am sure she went to this church many times. I am surprised it is a bed and breakfast. I have been there last May. What a beautiful view there is from the grounds! We walked to/from the Hotel Avenida to the church - once we learned we did not have to hike up the big hill to get to it. I wish your friend all the best and if I go back to Sao Miguel again, I will be sure to stay there. Just beautiful! Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Casa da Maria de Deus Bed and breakfast
There's someone in my family tree waay back there that's afiliated with the building of the church. The name slips my mind at the moment (and I don't have my genealogy program open). Anyways, Shirley Allegre and I walked on the opposite side (away from the B B) when we went to Ponta Delgada together. Loved the shot of the band :) Cheri -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Follow the confirmation directions when they arrive. Re: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Casa da Maria de Deus Bed and breakfast
George, I'm glad to hear the church is still intact. But her B B is still in a great location and I still would certainly consider staying there if/when I return to Sao Miguel. It's a lot more personal than staying in a hotel. E -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Follow the confirmation directions when they arrive. [AZORES-Genealogy] geneall.net/p/
Hi to All, Just curious, does anyone belong to geneall.net/p/? It is an interesting site, very well managed. Much of the site can be browsed free, but they say there is more information available to those who belong. I am always leery of such sites, thought I would ask those who might know. I'll be there in August. Staying with Maria for five nights and then moving into Ponta Delgada at the Hotel Talisman for four nights. Hope to get to the archives. I think there is a festa in Agua e Pau while we're there.
