[AZORES-Genealogy] Viveiros from DeCima Sao Miguel, Azores
Aloha google groups, I descend on my Dad's side from grt.grandfather Anastacio de Viveiros (b. 1846 in De Cima, Azores) his father is listed as Antonio de Viveiros and mother Francisca de Jesus. I've seen his name also written, Athanzio, Atanacio, Atnacio and Anstos Veveiros in our Hawaiian Island records or City Directories. His wife was Maria Jose de Jesus (b. 1856 in the Azores ) They arrived here in Hawaii with a baby Maria on board, and had 4 more children in Hawaii: Joaquin, Joseph, Laudelina, and Katherine. I descend from their son Joaquin Viveiros, a grandfather I never met,( born in 1882 in Hawi, North Kohala, on the island of Hawaii). His son Stanley Viveiros was my father, who passed away last year. I shared local family history with him that I came across and introduced 'cousins' as they surfaced which he aprreciated, I think moreso for me. I love him for that. It was more important for me to connect the present, at the time, but now I would like to go further back if possible. Any help on where to start would be appreciated. [AZORES-Genealogy] Numbers and Notes
Hi, I originally obtained this record from the National Archives in San Francisco. Recently, it was scanned and put on Ancestry.com. When I originally found this, the person at the archives that helped me locate this document explained what the different numbers around my relatives names meant. However, I wasn't able to write notes as he was explaining the meaning. I was wondering if you could help me and explain them. My Great Grandfather, Great Grandmother, and Great Uncle are line 5-7 on this document. Can you help me decipher the notes?? Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name Spelling & Standardization
Besides the variations in the spelling, sometimes there are also mistakes. In my program (and possibly in yours) there is "also known as" and there I put the variation or mistaken name and the year found as such. You can also put it in the "notes" for that person. That has helped me with verifying or confirming that someone is who I think they are. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: da Rocha da Borba
Hi Robin Some years back I remember asking a Bertao a question. I'm not sure if he is the same one. My cousin Mike Cordinez was also working with a Bertao, I wish I could remember his first name. Is he the one who wrote a book? Yes Manoel the son of Jose da Rocha and Maria da Borba Vieira is my husband Joe's G+grandfather. He is the brother of your anacestor Jose da Rocha da Borba. Which one is David's ancestor? Well since the baby Jose is your GGgrandfather I think we filled in all the blanks. I'm also going to put them in my computer. Helen From: Besotes To: Helen Vierra Salvador Sent: Sun, Jun 20, 2010 11:49 am Subject: Re: da Rocha da Borba Hello! Yes, I got it! Thank you!!! Do you know this David Bertao? Ok, here's to answer your questions below. Yes, Jose (the baby) married Ana Furtado Jorge do Souto of Salao, Faial Azores and they had 12 children. Jose immigrated to Milpitas - how and why I don't know. But, with your Manual Borba maybe being here before or other family of Borba's being her that could be why he came to Milpitas. Anyhow, he and Ana married in Half Moon Bay and I show no record of the two of them living there but I do have a copy of their marriage certificate proving they were married there. They then settled in San Jose until they died. A cousin who lives in Texas has a photo of them, so I went to the former Portuguese faternal organization in San Jose and saw where he signed to be a member and they had a photograph with their officers and there he was. It was only because I had seen the photo that I sent you that I knew who he was. A very short man standing on the upper steps. Now, I know why most of us are under 5'5. (haha). I also found he was a founding member of the Portuguese faternal organization in Milpitas which ended up merging with San Jose and no longer exists. Of all their children I have most of their information. One was married several times, so I'm not sure if I have all his wives. Another lost a child around 8 yrs old to a disease, but I've yet to find where the child is buried. One as suppose to be to have played in old western movies as a cowboy, but have yet to find or prove that yet. I see what you mean with the head spinning. With all the names, etc. over and over again it's confusing. I emailed this David Bertao online last week and received a reply from him. I think we also have a connection to him. I'll forward you what I've received from him. He said if the Jose (baby) is my ancestor, he would be the grandson of Jozeph da Rocha and Maria de Borba, fromwhom comes the family surname of "da Rocha de Borba". Their son, Manuel was my (his) ancestor. Would this be your husbands Manuel? I'm going to input some of this into my computer and see if it makes sense. I need to email David, so let me know if you know him or have been in contact with him. I'm not sure where he's from yet. He does have information going back to the early 1600's too that may help us all.let's hope it's all the same, which I think it is. I am surprised it appears they always stayed in Sao Bartolomeu. I'm off to send this to you so you can see what you make of this. :) Let's talk soon. Robin :) Hi Robin, Jut a quick not to tell you what I found. First of all the Jose da Rocha married to Custodia Candida was not dead at the time of the birth of his son Jose in born 2/10/1850. He had at least 3 children after that. Maria b. Feb. 4, 1851 Maria b. Feb. 6, 1853 Gertrudes b. June 13, 1855. I stopped at this point. Will continue later. Second I found the marriage record for Jose da Rocha Borba and Mariana Josefa. They were married Dec. 28, 1760. He is the son of Joise da Rocha da Borba and Agada do Espirto Santo, So that closed the gap I think. Do you have a marriage date for Jose da Rocha Borba and Anna Furtado Jorge do Souto So far I have it this way. Gen. 1 Bras Gil Gen 2Joseph da Rocha and Maria da Borba Vieira M. Jan. 29, 1679 Gen 3Joseph da Rocha da Borba and Agueda Espirto Santo m Nov. 1. 1716 Gen 4Jose da Rocha da Borba and Marianna Josefa m. 1760 Gen 5Francisco da Rocha da Borba and Ana Theodoro m. Mar. 21, 1849 Gen 7Jose (this is the baby) b. in 1850 I don't know who he is married to. but it could be your Ana Furtado Jorge or maybe there is someone between Jose the baby and Jose and Ana Furtado. Gen 8Antonio Rocha Borba and Mary Matos Gen 9Lawrence Borba I'm not sure about the last 3 generations. Did Jose da Rocha and Ana Furtado have their children in the U.S or the Azores? You probably have all that information for the last 3 generations.. As for the the the witness at the birth of Jose in 1850, I found one Matilde. She is the daughter of a Jose da Rocha da Borba (figures) and Perpetua Theodoro. This Jo

Hi Jesse, It would depend on what you want to do with the data base. If I were doing a tree to show my family then I use actual names as they were spelled at the time. If I were doing a searchable data base (which I am) then I standardize spelling with some exceptions. A good example is the one you give I treat Helena and Elena separately but others like Mello and Melo are all spelled Mello. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Sao Miguel Records
The only reason I remember some of this is because of my broken leg. The passaporte section had some records from the port of Angra. They were all typed up by Joao Ventura. You could search them (via modern Portuguse spelling - i.e. my surname of Mello would be Melo). They were the older ones with less info. They also had some from the port of Ponta Delgada on the Web site. Maybe from 1875 - 1903. That was at the old web site with the different URL. I seem to remember that it was a couple of years before my broken leg, so that would be about 2004. I remember when I broke my leg in the spring of 2006 and had to lay on my back with my leg elevated for weeks, that I was checking the CCA site and thinking they hadn't uploaded anything in a couple of years. Then I heard that they were going to change the URL to the new site, so I copied the Sao Miguel passaportes and Rosemarie copied Angra. That was late 2006 and early 2007. When the new site appeared, they took down Angra and slowly added a little bit more for Ponta Delgada. They never readded Angra and never added Horta. Joao Ventura came to CA in the spring of 2007. At that time he stated Sao Jorge records were all scanned and ready to go, but they had to wait for the OK from the government to post them (they have their privacy concerns too). They started to post Sao Jorge, Flores, Corvo, Terceira, and Sao Miguel over the last 2 years. Sao Miguel holds half the population of the Azores. That will be a fairly large section. Periodically, I ask that we email the CCA to let them know that we appreciate their efforts and look forward to more coming online. If they know that the site is getting used, I hope our emails keep their momentum up. *drac@azores.gov.pt* Cheri Mello Listowner, Azores-Gen Researching: Vila Franca, Ponta Garca, Ribeira Quente, Ribeira das Tainhas, Achada -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Ellen, They've been coming online for years now. I think parish registers we see on the CCA site has been the last 2 years. I remember hearing Joao Ventura speak in 2007 that the records were ready to go but tied up in red tape about the cut off year due to privacy. It seem that took a year for the government to decide. I think the "passaportes" has been coming online like 6 years (or more). Soon? By my definition, no. Someday? I think so. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Sao Miguel Records
Ellen, The CCA seems to have their own timetable on getting Parish Records online. It may be next week that yours comes on or it may be a year from now! You have to just keep checking the site. They seem to start with one Concelho and a time and go alphabetically within it but who knows? [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: ARRUDA - NORDESTE
hello Eliseu I was born in Nordeste and I am descentant of the Nordeste Arrudas. My Arruda line currently only goes as far as Antonio de Arruda who was married to a Maria de Estrela. Antonio was the son of Francisco Cabral Arruda and Francisca Raposa. They were married on 18 Nov 1831. Both were both born abt.1810 Antonio's father Francisco was married on 10 June 1878 to a Maria de Jesus. He was in his 40's she was apparently 18 years old. I also have many Brandao, Cabral and Raposo ancestors from Nordeste. I am sure there is a relationship between my Arrudas and your António Arruda married to Teresa Rebelo Herb On Jun 19, 1:12 pm, "Eliseu Manuel Pacheco da Silva" wrote: > Hi, > > Looking for direct ancestors (8th and 7th great grandparents). > > Any info on António Arruda married to Teresa Rebelo would be much > appreciated.
