Story has it that my ancestors, who came to America had a total of 6 kids.
Four of the boys lived to adulthood. One handwritten note exists from a
daughter-in-law that states "Baby girl born in RI (crossed out) Cal. passed
away very little. - Baby boy born in RI was only a few days old." My
great-grandma's will states that she had 3 living children (at the time of
her will) and one son who died in 1965 and two other children who died in
infancy. Six is the magic number. And my ancestors weren't in RI, they
were in New Bedford, MA. I think that part of the story is mixed up.

Dick Eastman put out a blurb last month from the Hemet-San Jacinto (CA)
Genealogy Society. They are doing a centennial book. My ancestors settled
and died there. So I got after my dad (age 76) to start writing. I called
one of the contacts today about the submission and other particulars. She
goes and pulls out her cemetery book. I didn't know that they had one. She
says that George and Louise Mello are buried there (my grandparents). She
said William & Lois R. Mello are buried there (my aunt & uncle). She said
Manuel & Gloria Mello are there (my greats - the ones from Ribeira das
Tainhas). AND IN THAT PLOT IS ANOTHER MANUEL

My dad got the cemetery records for me about a year ago. One thing about
most workers - they give you what you asked for. He didn't ask for any lost
Manuels. He only got his parents, grandparents, and aunt and uncle. No
other Manuel. Now to figure out when this Manuel was born and died.
Probably in the 19teens when some records were hit and miss.

Pretty good though. I now have the name of one of the missing children! It
only took 18 years for that one! LOL

Cheri,

I live about 45 minutes from Hemet. Would you like me to drive to the cemetery
sometime and take pictures of the headstones? It seems to be quite popular
with my ancestors in the South (Georgia, Florida). Let me know the cemetery
name and I'll stop by to take pictures and e-mail them to you.

Group,
Amazon.com has 26 DVD used copies from .55 to 3.50 and new from 13.00
-- pleanty available. VHS tapes from 11.00 for new, and used
available also. Parts of this movie was made in New Bedford, NewPort,
and Mattapoisett, and the scenes are good, but the story is pretty
lame, If your familiar with the South coast area of Mass, you will
recognize many sights, but as I said the story is draggy. It made
quite a splash when it was premiered here, and many went to see it,
and it was nice to have a Portuguese theme.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Peter REGO b. Sant Cruz Lagoa 10 January 1874

2010-07-07 Thread Marjorie Perry
Dear List members,

If while any of you are searching the baptism records for Santa Cruz ,
Lagoa ,Sao Miguel and you see the name Pedro de REGO [ Peter Rego] would you
please let me know what the record says?

I have been searching for the names of his parents to no avail.

I have the following from various records here in the states.
His draft Reg Card New Bedford, MA states he was b. 10 Jan 1874. His name on
this record Pedro do REGO.
A conversation with the priest at Our lady of Mt Carmel, New Bedford, MA
confirms his birth as recorded on his son John's baptism record as Santa
Cruz, Lagoa, Sao Miguel. His parents name not listed.
He emigrated in 1895 and was naturalized in 1904 according to the 1920
census New Bedford, MA.
The Naturalization records on Ancestry.com shows he was naturalized 25 June
1905. He was living in Fall River at the time. It also confirms his date of
birth as 10 Jan 1874. It does not give his date of arrival.
His death record 21 Oct 1942 New Bedford, mA., states -names of father &
mother CANNOT be learned.

I have his marriage date and the information on all his children.

Unfortunately I DO NOT read Portuguese and current problems with my eyesight
makes it even more difficult to try to read the records now available from
Lagoa that are on line.
Should anyone run across this name I would very much appreciate knowing what
the record says.

Thank you

Marge [Howes] PERRY
