[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Pleasanton conference

2010-08-22 Thread netadosAcores
Eric,

Thank you. That was perfect. I remember getting Cheri's e-mail, but I
wasn't able to open the site for the conference. So I was thinking it was
down in Southern CA.

There is the Pleasanton History library on Main Street. We found some of
our grandparents graduation pictures from High School. Kind of fun. If
anyone attending had relatives who lived in Pleasanton, you need to call the
Library ahead of time and schedule an appointment for one of the volunteers
to help you do some local research. Patsy and I spent over an hour with
two ladies who were so helpful and fun pulling out high school year books
for us.

Friday and Saturday nights in Pleasanton on Main Street are good for
walking through old town, a lot of the restaurants have outside dinning and
for
the coffee and ice cream lovers you can enjoy both on your walks.

I do recommend that you chat and get a count for those wanting to have
dinner together on Fri/Sat night as walk ins for a large party will be an hour
or more wait. For those liking Mexican food, I would recommend Alberto's'
Cantina on Main. They offer a room in the back, semi private depending on
how large a group that you have. Food is great, and the price is
affordable.

And for the breakfast lovers, it's Dean's Cafe with 101 omelettes to
choose from. I'm jealous for you if you go and order the linguisa avocado
omelet, my favorite and not available here in Utah. Get there early. I'm not
sure if they open at 6:00 or 7:00 but they fill up fast. They are in old
town across from Christensen's Saddlery on Main Steet.

To all who get to attend the workshop, enjoy.

Ava

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: ÁLVARO NORONHA, 1875-1941, b orn Topo, São Jorge, died LA Co., Calif.

2010-08-22 Thread Katharine
Thanks for checking Álvaro Noronha for me, Cheri.

Finally got around to looking him up on Ancestry.com this morning.
Interesting that he married comparatively late in life, and to a woman
of his own generation from a different island (São Miguel), hence no
children -- since a fair number of Azorean men in those days married
much younger women (e.g., my Grandma and especially her sister) and
often from the same island (or, in the case of my Great-aunt, she was
born in California but her mother was from Flores, and she married an
immigrant from nearby Corvo).

Was slightly surprised that Álvaro was 5'10", which strikes me as
rather tall for a Portuguese man of his generation (b. 1875). On the
other hand, some of the Noronha males I've met on São Jorge are 6' or
taller, even one born circa 1920, so maybe it's something in the
genes.

Ancestry also has a scan of Álvaro's 1917-18 draft registration card
(he would've been in his early 40s by then, so not prime draft
material, I'd imagine), which lists his occupation as "Dairyman"
working for one Joe Enos Bettencourt -- Cheri, can you decipher the
placename of the RFD address, apparently in LA County, Cal.? -- and
also cites Álvaro's mother Rosa as still alive back on São Jorge as
his next of kin.

Katharine.

Found the following via Google in the 8 March 2006 "Hartford [CT.]
Courant" indicating that Rosália died in Windsor, CT., so maybe the
Windsor City Hall or the county courthouse in the county where Windsor
is located has her death certificate on file:

Rosalia Lima, 92; Of Somers

Rosalia de Serpa Pires Lima of Somers died Monday at Kimberly Hall
North in Windsor. She was 92.

She was born in Santa Cruz da Graciosa, Azores, Portugal.

The funeral and burial will be at the convenience of the family. Leete-
Stevens Enfield Chapels is handling arrangements.

Since Rosália was born after 1911, I think her birth record ought to
be on Graciosa.  Since that's a pretty small island, I wonder if
there's only one city hall or conselho courthouse there.  Does anyone
else here know for sure?

Best of luck, Katharine.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Anyone using Ipad for genealogy

2010-08-22 Thread bellemarco
Is anyone using the Ipad for their genealogy program? Or is this even
possible? I am thinking of purchasing one but only if I can store my
genealogy records on it. I use Family Tree Maker for Windows now but I know
FTM is coming out with a program for the MAC. Remember you are talking to a
computer "ill"literate hereso I probably don't know what I am talking
about.

Thanks

Funny you should raise that question. I belong to the Computer
Genealogy Society [in] San Diego [CA) and that was the very issue that
our presentation was on. It was "Genealogy in the Cloud" and was
about using an iPad for genealogy--and how you do not need programs
like FamilyTreeMaker, RootsMagic, TMG or any of the others. Now you
can do genealogy "on the web.through Google docs. It was a real good
presentation.

  Celeste,

  No, I have another obligation.

At genealogy shows, I'm kind of obnoxious (as others can tell you). I've
worn costumes, band uniforms, or taken one of those little desk flags and put
my hair up in the clip and put the flag in it. I also have a name badge from
the So. Cal Gen Society with dangles on it listing about 4 of my freguesias.

If I remember right, the first time I met you, I told you what the band
uniforms looked like and you found the band director. I had changed clothes
(that's why you couldn't find me) and the director came up to me and said there
was a woman with a straw hat over by some trees with an index card that read
AZORES GENEALOGY or whatever you had written! LOL

If only a few people wore scarves though, everyone else could be looking for
the scarf people or meeting up afterwards at Eric's store.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Anyone using Ipad for genealogy

2010-08-22 Thread Kathy Cardoza

I have an iPad and love it! I would say that it is not a substitute for a
computer but is an enhancement to my lifestyle. That being said, yes, you can
put your genealogy on the iPad. I am a Mac user and use Reunion. There is a
version of Reunion for the iPhone that works well on the iPad too. LeisterPro
is currently working on a native version of Reunion for the iPad. But,
meanwhile, the iPhone version works well and is complete with sources, images,
etc. Also, there are numerous other programs available for the iPad that will
take a gedcom from your Windows genealogy program and convert it for use on
their program on your iPad. Just recently, a new iPad app was released that
will work with Legacy, an excellent Windows genealogy program.

So, yes, there are a lot of options available to have your genealogy on your
iPad. I also use Bento, a database program, to keep my research notes in, both
on my computers and on my iPad so I have it all with me all the time. :)

What I would recommend, if you are interested, is to go to the Apple App Store
by using iTunes on your computer and do a search for genealogy. Some apps only
work with their regular computer counterparts such as Reunion or
MobileFamilyTree which works with MacFamilyTree. But, one I have used is
FamViewer which is very good and imports gedcoms

I know that FTM is releasing a Mac version soon but there is nothing about an
iPad or iPhone version that I have heard of. But, again, that FamViewer would
fit your needs nicely, either coming from Windows or a Mac genealogy program.

If you have any other questions about the iPad, you might want to email me off
the list and I'd be happy to answer them.
