[AZORES-Genealogy] Azores weather cams
This isn't genealogy but it certainly helps maintain a connection with the Azores. I recently got an app for my iPhone called iClimaat (go to the app store and look for it if you are interested). It gives you a choice of looking at the weather cams on the various islands of the Azores. The one for Horta shows an awesome view of Pico, across the channel. It's interesting to see the different views during the day. Of course, due to the time difference it's often night when I remember to look! But you can still see the lights. I visited the Climaat website at the University of the Azores ( http://www.climaat.angra.uac.pt/ ) and found that you can get the same information-- and more--there on your computer. There is a whole page of the weather cam pictures so you can see them all at once and then click on the one you want to see full size. (Can't provide the direct URL, just click around. Also visit the GALERIA DE FOTOS (photo gallery). I like the iPhone app because it's portable. I was really glad that I could share a link to the pictures with others who can't get the iPhone app. I hope you enjoy! Mary PS In looking around the Climaat site I find there's the same problem as at the CCA site--items not yet online. There was a link to historical climate data with an image of a hand written page, but the link didn't have any information, just a search function that didn't work form me. It might be like the link on the CCA site to the passports that aren't there yet. Maybe it means the data is there and will be online at some point. I'm looking for my grandfather (always known as Joseph Lewis) who was born on Sao Jorge in Topo, but when I follow your suggestions and click on baptisms and the years he was born I get a message saying that the page isn't available. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Online records for Sao Jorge
Lorinda, I may be that you are using the wrong search engine. Do not use Firefox (Mozilla) try Internet Explorer or maybe even SAfari. Sometime Safari works and sometimes it doesn't! Remember that the records are written in Portuguese and as you go farther back in time they use more and more abbreviations for the names. My suggestion is that you go to Kathy Cardoza's AzoresGenWeb site and check out her clues! Especially download the Genealogical Word List and the Paleography booklet. Good Luck! Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Fayal
Hi Lori, The 2 freguesias on Faial that begin with an F are Feteira and Flamengos. There may be a smaller area (like a lugar - you can think of it more as a neighborhood) that could be Faja de something. [AZORES-Genealogy] Shrove Tuesday
Today is Shrove Tuesday. Also known in France as Fat Tuesady. Today we eat - tomorow we fast. ..In England Shrove Tuesday is called Pancake Day. In the news that I saw today, Prince Wiliam and Catherine were celebrating Shrove Tuesday in North Ireland tossing pankcakes with children. And it's a big day in Rio and in New Orleans it is a Mardi Gras celebration. In Hawaii it is Malasada Day A tradition in Hawaii brought by the Portuguese Catholics from Madeira and the Azores So my genealogist friends - eat and be merry today, for tomorrow we fast.
