RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Numbering systems for family records
Hi Mary, I have been doing genealogy since 1991 and have had a number of programs. To me numbers do not matter so I do not use them. My program does assign a number to every person I enter. Ahnenttafel numbers are good when printing a report and you have empty spots and they link to ascendants and descendants. I suppose in the old days BC (before computers) numbers meant more as records were kept on sheets and cards. When I print reports I do not like to clutter it up with numbers. Rick Richard Francis Pimentel Spring, TX Formerly of Epping, New Hampshire Researching, Riberia Grande, Riberinha Ponta Delgada, and Achada Grande, Sao Miguel, Acores This doesn't just concern Azores research, but I'd love to hear about systems or rules people use for their family history records. Does it make sense to assign a unique number to each individual that is added or to only use numbers (e.g. ahnentafel system) when creating a report for a specific branch of the family? What are good references for organizing family history records? I use Reunion (for Macs) and am still learning about its features. Thanks! [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Portuguese citizenship
Dual citizenship also comes in handy when traveling to countries that aren't US friendly... I have a friend that travel to different countries because of his work he would use the Portuguese passport in some countries... it made him feel safer... unfortunately, US citizens are not loved all over the world some will target people traveling with a US passport... Another 2 cents... ;-) Nivea On Jan 31, 11:12 pm, Katharine katharine.f.ba...@gmail.com wrote: I'd imagine that most people looking into dual citizenship might be retirees thinking about spending part of the year in Portugal. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Numbering systems for family records
Mary, FTM (Family Tree Maker) assigns a number to each entry. I don't pay too much attention to the numbers. When printing a report or chart (descendent/ancestor/etc.) a number is assigned (by the program). #1 is the person with whom you begin. If the report is about me, I am #1. #2 is my father, #3 is my mother. My paternal grandfather is #4, paternal grandmother is #5. Maternal grandfather is #6, maternal grandmother is #7. The pattern is to double the male ancestor and double, plus 1 for the female ancestor. This happens automatically in FTM. I know that Shirley uses her numbering system in a different way. She will have to explaine how hers works. One thing I have done is to write IN ALL CAPS the people who are direct ancestors and their siblings, etc. in Regular Type. This helps me know immediately when I look in the index if someone is a direct line or not. It has saved me time when I am trying to match a name. The other thing I have done is to file my index by first name. I have found that the non-existent naming tradition for Portuguese I have researched makes it very time consuming to try to find a name in my large index. By using first names (for the most part) I have better success knowing that a Manuel may have different surnames (depending on what he was calling himself at the time) and looking at each Manuel is a lot easier than going from one surname to another in the index. All the Manuel's are in alpha order in one place. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Numbering systems for family records
Hi Mary Most genealogy programs assign sone sort of ID/Reference number for you, so assigning one within your program is not necessary. As far as systems go there are as many ways of doing this as there are people doing it. :) I use a very simple system and file everything by names of the head of the family. I have a file system set up this way in my Home directory (User folder) of my computer: These are al folder names... Documents Family History Files Maps Misc. Places Portuguese Genealogy Surnames Andrade Henry Andrade (folder with all Henry's documents in it) Others do assign their own numbering system to their paper documents. Still others prefer to organize their files into groups such as: Census, Deaths, Land Records, etc. There is no right or wrong way. The idea is to find a method that you can live with and that works for you and then stick with it. I would recommend to you (if you don't already do this) to visit the ReunionTalk Forums here: http://www.reuniontalk.com/index.php It is a great way to learn about this program and all its capabilities. Also, you should investigate GenealogyTools http://genealogytools.com/ He has a whole section on Reunion info. If you donate a small sum, you can download his videos to watch and learn from. Even $5 will allow you to be a member and have access to these wonderful videos. You can learn a lot about Reunion and some tips and tricks from these so, in my opinion, they are well worth it. There is also a video there on organizing your genealogy files. Good luck and happy hunting!
