Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Portuguese citizenship

It's my understanding that the majority of Americans applying for Portuguese
passports to obtain dual citizenship are children of people born in portugal.

They can travel in the 27 EU countries with ease, live there or work there sans
visas and a whole lot more.

You don't need a Portuguese passport when traveling in the EU countries since
the Portuguese ID card (BI) is all that is asked for.  The ease of travel
within
the EU countries was the reason I looked into this about six years ago.

Dual citizenship also comes in handy when traveling to countries that
aren't US friendly... I have a friend that travel to different
countries because of his work he would use the Portuguese passport
in some countries... it made him feel safer... unfortunately, US
citizens are not loved all over the world some will target people
traveling with a US passport...

Another 2 cents...  ;-)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Numbering systems for family records

2012-02-03 Thread Shirley Allegre
I assign a PERSONAL I.D. number to each direct ancestor. This was when I am
looking for someone, the I.D. number is right there with their name.
I am #1, my father is #2, my mother is #3, etc. The same as Celeste does.

Mary, FTM (Family Tree Maker) assigns a number to each entry. I don't
pay too much attention to the numbers.

When printing a report or chart (descendent/ancestor/etc.) a number is
assigned (by the program). #1 is the person with whom you begin. If the
report is about me, I am #1.
#2 is my father, #3 is my mother. My paternal grandfather is #4,
paternal grandmother is #5. Maternal grandfather is #6, maternal grandmother
is #7. The pattern is to double the male ancestor and double, plus 1 for the
female ancestor. This happens automatically in FTM.

I know that Shirley uses her numbering system in a different way. She
will have to explaine how hers works.

One thing I have done is to write IN ALL CAPS the people who are direct
ancestors and their siblings, etc. in Regular Type. This helps me know
immediately when I look in the index if someone is a direct line or not. It
has saved me time when I am trying to match a name.

The other thing I have done is to file my index by first name. I have
found that the non-existent naming tradition for Portuguese I have researched
makes it very time consuming to try to find a name in my large index. By using
first names (for the most part) I have better success knowing that a Manuel
may have different surnames (depending on what he was calling himself at the
time) and looking at each Manuel is a lot easier than going from one surname to
another in the index. All the Manuel's are in alpha order in one place.

Hope this helps, Celeste

This doesn't just concern Azores research, but I'd love to hear about
systems or rules people use for their family history records. Does it make
sense to assign a unique number to each individual that is added or to only use
numbers (e.g. ahnentafel system) when creating a report for a specific branch
of the family?

What are good references for organizing family history records?

I use Reunion (for Macs) and am still learning about its features.

  Thanks!

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Rosemarie (Gomes) Evans Obituary

2012-02-03 Thread Eileen Leite
I looked this item up in Ancestry, and it linked to a citation:

EVANS, Rosemarie (GOMES); 93; ; SF Chronicle (CA); 1998-9-15; bjw

This is an obituary index, and it seems that her obit appeared in the San
Francisco Chronicle, Sept 15, 1998. The newspaper's online index at
Legacy.com only goes back as far as 2005, which is why you couldn't get it
to come up

Then I googled, How do I get back issues of the San Francisco chronicle
and got some info at http://www.sfgate.com/chronicle/faq.shtml#faq10
:

The newspaper says it is possible to get back issues; here is the edited
information . You might want to call the number and see what other options
may be available to get a copy of that obituary. Maybe a library out there
has microfilmed images, and would do a lookup and send you a copy. Good
luck!

Where can I get back issues?

There are three ways to get back issues: In person at The San Francisco
Chronicle, by mail, by Federal Express. There is a charge.
Address: 901 Mission Street, San Francisco (corner of Fifth Street)
Hours: Monday - Friday, 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM

Only the past thirty (30) days are available in person. For papers
older than 30 days, please call our back copy desk to check for availability
(415) 777-6833.

Hi Linda,

Publishing an obituary in any newspaper is not mandatory... my mother
did not want my father's published when he passed away 2 yrs ago...
Along with that, the newspapers charge you a small fortune... it might
be that her obituary was not published...

Just throwing in my 2 cents...

On the 26 of April 1880 at 2pm in the afternoon, at a house in Bairro (I
don't research S. Jorge, so that needs to be corrected), of this Villa,
freguesia of Sao Jorge, council of Velas, diocese of Angra, died receiving
the sacraments of the Saint Mother Church, an individual of the sex
feminine, by the name of Victorina Claudia Furtado, of the age of 78 years,
widow of Jose da Rosa Furtado, native of this freguesia (that would be
Victorina), where she was living/residing, daughter natural of pai
incoginto (father unknown) and of Maria Theresa, both natives of this
freguesia, Matriz, that the witnesses something or the other (that might be
the part where it says no will), 5 children, and was buried in the cemetery
public, in this Villa. It was answered and written in duplicate and
recorded... It was as above (that part is Latin). Then he signs.

Someone else will fill in or correct some of my loosey-goosey parts.
