Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] great great grandfather Antonio Silveira Pereira

2012-04-18 Thread Gayle Machado
Michael,

The closest record I could find for Manuel Joaquim Leal on Pico was:
Manuel Leal born 17 Jan 1846 in Prainha to Jose Manuel Leal (1802-1854) and Ana
Maria (1810-1893).

Hope this helps,

Gayle

[AZORES-Genealogy] great great grandfather Antonio Silveira Pereira

2012-04-18 Thread MICHAEL GILFILIAN
This is my first post and I'm really just getting started in my
search. Antonio was born in 1867 sometime between 3/30/1867 and
7/6/1867, I calc this because the Cemetery he's buried in said he was
90yrs old when he was buried on July 10th 1957, there was newspaper
article about him on 3/30/1941 and he hadn't reached his next birthday
yet in the story. At 16 in 1884 he ran away from the family farm on
Fayal to go whaling on the Charles W. Morgan out of New Bedford, Ma.
Went back home until coming to the USA on 4/1/1888 for good. He
married Maria Leal at St. John the Baptist Church in 1897. As i learn
more and learn what to ask here. But I'd like to find out anything I
can.

so I'm searching for; Antonio Silveira Pereira, Fayal. Manuel Joaquin
Leal, Pico born 1846 died 11/27/1886 in new bedford, ma.

My grandmother was born in Sao Mattheus so I am thinking her mother was too.
Her parents were Jose daCosta and Emilia Augusta. Their children were Virgina
1889, Matthew 1891, Manuel 1893, Victorina 1894, Gertrudes 1896, Amelia 1898
and Mary "Mission" 1900. Matthew married Adelaide Sues, Victorina married
Manuel Perry, Amelia married Herman Costa Fayal and Mary "Mission" married John

This is my grandmother's mother. My grandmother's baptism record states that
her mother was born and baptized on Terceira, Sao Matheus and a resident of
Biscoitos. I know that my gr grandmother's parents were Jose da Costa and
Emilia Augusta. To find my gr grandmother's birth or baptism record would my

I would first look for the marriage of Jose da Costa and Emilia Augusta. Two
reasons there are much less records to search and the marriage record will
give the names of their parents.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Machado Bettencourt, 1870s - 1880s, Horta (Matriz) on Faial

2012-04-18 Thread Cheri Mello
Repost for Lester, lester.murray at gmail.com

I was looking through Horta (Matriz) baptisms 1867-1890 and I
found Amelia in record #60 dated August 1885 and a sister, Anna in an
earlier record #33 dated May 1884. Their parents Manoel Machado
Bettencourt (b. Graciosa abt. 855) and Maria Hortensia de Bettencourt
(b. Lajes do Pico abt. 1853) were maried in Horta 12 September 1877.
Seems like there should be other children born between 1877 and 1884?
Any assistance would be appreciated.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Rodrigues-Medeiros maybe Cabral from Sao Pedro Ponta Delgada

2012-04-18 Thread Karen Huffman
My grandfather was Evaristo Rodrigues Medeiros born 22 Nov 1898 in Sao
Pedro, Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel. His father was Antonio Rodrigues Medeiros
and his mother was Emily Cabral. Supposedly they were well to do. They had
land and housekeepers. After Emily died Antonio married the housekeeper's
daughter which caused a scandal. I have a picture of Antonio and Emily's
family. They had 8 children. We only know of Alfredo who went to Brazil,
Georgina born 22 Oct 1890, Gaudino born about 1895 and married Amelia.
(Gaudino and Amelia's 3 daughters and 1 son went to Canada. 1 son Humberto
is still in Sao Miguel). Alberto was born about 1900 and married Virginia.
We know 2 more brothers Antonio and Tiago. Tiago was killed in the
Portuguese Army when he was about 22. I tried writing Humberto in
Portuguese and English with no response. Do any of these people sound
familiar? I would love information on them!!

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: LDS Family History Library Feedback

I found the website of the Núcleo de Estudos de Populaçáo e Sociedade,
Instituto de Ciéncias Sociais, which is run by the Universidade do
Minho, in Braga, Portugal. There are several databases with
information not available on the CCA site. It is just data, no
original documents or images. I was particularly interested in data
for Pico and Faial. I emailed the database administrator and asked
where the data came from and he said it came from the original records
kept in Horta.

The url for their new website is: http://www.ghp.ics.uminho.pt

I did find some of the information to be useful and consistent with
what I found in the Library, but one record in the database was
obviously wrong (too many years between the birth of parent and child.

After I posted about the LDS Library, I spoke to the Library Volunteer
Coordinator and she is working to resolve the equipment problems.
Yes, there are different lenses for different films, but not all the
Library volunteers know this or how to change them. She also offered
to let me take the films to a nearby public library which has similar
equipment for reading the microfilm and printing the images. She has
been very helpful.
