Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Frank Edward Ray (Reis), Hero of the 1976 Chowchilla School Bus kidnaping
Kathie, I don't recall if I ever met him. I seem to recall that when I was a teenager, we as a family (including my Uncle Jose Reis and Aunt Angelina and Uncle Jose Freitas who did the driving) went to visit older relatives in the Chowchilla area who I think were his parents. Since he was 12 years my senior he could very well have been married by then and living elsewhere. Note that In the AP obituary they quote his grand-daughter Robyn Gomes, (another clue.) The story I seem to recall about the name change is that there were other Reis families in the same area and that the mailman kept mixing up the mail so the father changed his name from Reis to Ray .I can't be sure about this but I think that Ed Ray's father (whose first name I don't recall) was either a half brother or possibly a first cousin of my Uncle Jose Reis. [AZORES-Genealogy] challenge
My gggrandparents didn't make the search for their wedding information easy especially since it's obvious my gggrandparents weren't all that accurate with what year it was when what information the family did have the years of events didn't quite match in most things. Now it's possible because new bedford, dartmouth and fairhaven were all one big city at one time. They got married at St. John the Baptist church in New Bedford, got their marriage license in Fairhaven, lived in South Dartmouth, but I finally have everything in the mail coming to me. I received the marriage certificate from the church and it has their full names and their parents full names, the clerk in Fairhaven read off the information on the license and it said more or less the same thing, but Fairhaven didn't have the application paperwork. But somehow Joan at the New Bedford library had access to that set of papers and it is in the mail to me as of last Thursday. Of course nobody has the same last names, parents to children, husbands to wives, so the search will expand by a couple more layers, I'm hoping that there will be more information with concern to where they are from. my gggrandfather and family clues lead to Faial, and my gggrandmothers family hails from Pico so at least I got a little closer. You guys have been great to me answering all my questions, pointing in new directions where to look. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Francis Joseph
Thanks to both Cheri maria Lima for the useful hints. I been to Archives NZ and they were very helpful and supplied me some information which I didn't have. This is how I found out my GtGt Grandfathers name and as I said earlier his place of birth is listed as Azores or Western Isles, neither of which is very useful! The Obits Marriage papers were of no use either. I can only surmise given the period in which he lived, he didn't have an easy time of it not being english' and authorities possibly found it easier just to say 'Western Isles' on official documents. I have spent hours pouring over shipping lists and did find a Francis Joseph from Flores, who seems about the right age, travelled to Nantuckett, Nantuckett, Mass and later on was perhaps the same man sailing the Atlantic Pacific showing up in Australia. Both the time frame and age of the individual fits at various recorded points. However there is absolutely no proof it is my Gt Grandfather at this point. I haven't had much luck with either Ancestry.com or Mr Holmes' site. So here's hoping someone, some where may have some info, I read my Azores- Geneology emails every day and delight when someone gets some good news about an ancestor! If you could find the wife's name then you could look on pioneer index for more info. That is how I discovered info that lex ne to uncover much about our 2 gold miner great grandfathers (actually my husband's). If ge married an English girl, maybe she was Wesleyan. I learned that they were dissenters fm the Church of England, as was the case in one of our ancestors. Your gr grandfather was born a few year before our 2guys 1836 and 1838 but there were several siblings born before them. They were drawn to Australia by the goldfields. Any family stories that would give more of a clue? I was able to get the marriage certificate for my husband's gr grandfather and that's how I knew they were married by theWesleyan minister. I alzo found them on unassisted passengers comment on the ship Water Lily in 1853. Are there museums in the New Zealand area where they preserve names and history like they have in Victoria. Try cemetery where the family lived. Sounds like stayed put in one area (?) so if he was a carpenter maybe he made furniture- the old newspapers had many ads. I learned slot about out guys from the Creswick and Clunes daily Register and Advertiser. Then I sent away to the public records office Victoria for each of 18 articles where their names are mentioned. It is tedios but peopke in Victoria were amazingly helpful as I live in the US. I hope you keep looking and you will find him. My husband's gr grandfathers were J J DE LIMA and their father was Antonio José.
