I have a Moniz too but they married in Archinada (sp), then went to Lagoa.
I have ancestors who lived in Lagoa that were from Sao Rogue rosto do Cao.
Lagoa records are online. I have not ordered that film yet.

2012-07-05 Thread Maria Lima

Hi Pat- thanks for offering to do a look up.I have an ancestor from ponte
delgada, Sao Miguel but I do not know which parish he is from.

Maybe he's from the parish you are researching:

Domingos moniz Machado
Born 8 February 1874
Ponta delgado,Sao Miguel

father: jacintho Machado
Mother: Emilia Moniz

He had a brother:

Clement- I suppose it was "Clemente" Portuguese version
Maybe there's another way to translate Clement(?)

My mother in law said there were 4 boys and 1 girl

I have looked for years to find any other siblings for Domingos and Clem but
not sure. I did find an Augustus Machado in the Boston directories living at
same address and a joao but because I don't know the "freguesia" I'm at dead
end.

Maybe someone on the list has a parish where came from.
I have films from these churches:

Sao Pedro the apostle
Sao Jose
Sao roque rosto do cao
Sao

All from ponta delgada, Sao Miguel. I think those churches are pretty close to
each other. But those films have been for my LIMA research.

Domingos 's wife was from Sao Jose parish and I found her and her patents in
the microfilm but he met and married her in Boston( Maria Georgina de Almeida)
so I don't know what other parishes to research

I know he was fm ponta delgada but I cannot find . His name and Clemente are
easy names to pick out when one is going thru the film.

I don't know where else to go. Thank you. I hope he is found.(!)

I do not know about other places; however, in Angra, Terceira, there is a
private exchange that given very good exchange rates and little charge for the
exchange.  I last used it in 2009.

I was told that the family that owns this exchange was grandfathered in when a
change was made that only banks and hotels could make exchanges.  This is the
reason they still do it.  I don't remember the street it is on; however, it is
near the center of Angra and you use a side door next to a feed/hardware type
store.  Celeste, Hayward, CA.

If you are going to Europe soon, lucky you. 1.2388 Euro = 1 USD. Exchange will
be slightly more from your bank, etc. Keep watching and take a chance to see if
you want to see if it goes down further. You can follow it here:

Ancestry is prepay (in general) so simply cancel after your payment and it will
keep going until the period is done. I've done this myself.

Oh, and you can still update your tree once cancelled, but you lose the ability
to see previously added records! That's why I sync with FTM. All media is
downloaded and I control locally.

If you are going to Europe soon, lucky you. 1.2388 Euro = 1 USD. Exchange

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry - FREE ACCESS to select records - July 3-8, 2...

2012-07-05 Thread Greg's Gmail
Hello,
My personal experience with Ancestry.com was that the 14 day free trail
actually has to be cancel in the first 7 days.
So you may want read the fine print to see if I am correct.
Seems a little miss-leading.

I had used Pay-Pal, it has an automatic pay feature... so I set it pay in the
14 days,
on the 13th day I realized I was too late to cancel through Ancestry so then I
just
canceled the auto-pay from Pay-Pal.
Got my 14 days “As Advertised”

Good luck,

I like that idea; I do not like sites that automatically charge you just
because you do not tell them to stop. That is one reason I will not sign up for
Ancestry or other such sites.

and to add:

You have to give a credit card number to get the FREE 14 day, or what ever
days are free. So Dick Eastman advises, unless you CANCEL your FREE
subscription and really do not want to pay. Purchase a prepaid credit card,
sign up for the FREE days on Ancestry, and then use your prepaid credit card on
groceries, or whatever, so that if you forget to Cancel before the last Free
day, there is NO Value left on the prepaid card and you won't be charged for a
new subscription.

I did just thathad a Verizon Rebate credit card, and used it for a new Fold

remember in one year to cancel my subscription before the renewal date.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] History of the Azores

2012-07-05 Thread celeste perry
I just finished, "Home is an Island" and read about the author (I seem to do
things in reverse order!).  The dust cover says he "immigrated to California in
1922, learned English only after arriving in America and went on to study law
and became a municipal judge in the San Joaquin Vally."

Since the book ends with Jose leaving the Azores, I was curious as to what
happened to Jose.  I am assuming Jose was Alfred Lewis' experience in his
homeland until he left for America.  Now, I am pretty sure he did not return to
Pico and his beloved, Maria da Serra.
