2012-08-23 Thread Deb McCabe
Hi all,

I am curious if any of the members of my family tree are also on the trees of
others in this group. I thought I would start with this set of ancestors. My
direct line male ancestors are ibolded. Everyone on the
list lived in Feteira, Faial, Azores unless otherwise noted.

I hope someone is a match.  Thanks.

2012-08-23 Thread Diane George
I am a distant cousin of Maria Felicia do Coracao de Jesus (1826-1860 or
later) and her descendants through my mother's line. I have attached a
chart showing the direct ancestors in bold. My mother's ancestors are almost
all from Feteira. Unfortunately, I don't have any more info than you do on
the people you listed.

Let me know if you want more details.

2012-08-23 Thread Cheri Mello
Ria,

Rick Pimentel and I are volunteer administrators for Family Tree DNA. If
you want to test (and you are a female), you will order the Family Finder +
mtDNA test through the FTDNA web site. I forgot to list the link:
http://goo.gl/Wo490

You can pay by credit card or PayPal, I think. No one has had a problem
paying through the Internet with them. You can call them too (they are in
Texas, Central Daylight Time). (713) 868-1438.

Invoice method (where they bill you) is not valid for this particular sale.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] General Questions about Passports

2012-08-23 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Hi Lester,

Passports were required to travel (leave) the Acores. Only the ones from Sao
Miguel are on line. I would not assume he left by other means It could be
the name is wrong or perhaps the writing was bad and you missed it. If you
found his brothers then you know the council and village he came from I
would search the columns for everyone that came from that village. Can you
determine his arrival date in the US? If you can then I would go to the
passport records and start searching back from that date it most likely is
within a week of leaving the Acores.

I do remember two men that applied with my great grandfather the same day.
All their names were together and they were all from the same village. The
ship sailed a week later. When the ship arrived in NY only my Great
grandfather and one of them was on the ship. The other man must have had
second thoughts about leaving.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] General Questions about Passports

Questions about passports:

1. Were passports required to leave the Azores?

2. I have been looking through the Registo de Passaportes for a person
who left the Azores in 1904-1905. If his name does not appear in the
register, can I assume that he left through other, unconventional means?

3. There was a passport for an older brother issued in 1905 and probably
not used by him. Is it likely that his younger brother used this passport
to travel to the United States?

Thanks!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] General Questions about Passports

2012-08-23 Thread Cheri Mello
Lester,

I don't know that someone else could leave under someone else's name.

Only the port of Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel is online at this time. You
don't state where your ancestors were from. They could have sailed out of
Angra on Terceira or out of Horta on Faial.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: General Questions about Passports

2012-08-23 Thread Lester
Hi. I am researching Pedro Tavares born 1883 in Agua de Pau, San Miguel and
have been unable to find him in the passport files or ship passenger lists
that are available. According to the 1930 US Census, he arrived in the US
in 1904 (his wife provided that information to the census enumerator).

His older brother Jose was born in AdP in 1882. He received a passport 5
June 1904, but I think he did not use it. Jose was married in AdP in
November 1906, had a large family, and presumably never left. It seems to
me that if Pedro was going to leave the Azores, he would have gotten a
passport with his brother and likely travelled together.

Thanks!

OK, so what year(s) does he give on the 1910, 1920? And the 1940 if they
ask about it.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: General Questions about Passports

2012-08-23 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Hi Lester,

I just looked at the record on the CCA site Page 59 number 705 4 Jun 1904
Jose Pedro Tavares son of Jose Pedro and Helena? I can't make the second
name of mother out. Single age 22. The rest is a bit fuzzy for me to make
out but it does say he is going to the US and I am not sure of the ships
name. If you can make it out you may find him on the passenger list
arriving.

3-1905/PASSAPORTES-PDL-1903-1905_item1/P61.html

He used Jose Pedro Tavares on the passport and when he got her he became
known as Pedro Tavares. This was not his brother Jose Tavares.
