[AZORES-Genealogy] looking for author of old post about possible relatives' match
Hi all, I found an old posting on an Azores site from a woman named Connie. She wrote the post in 1999. Unfortunately, her e-mail is no longer active. I am hoping she is following this Google group or that someone might either know how to reach her or recognize the family she was inquirying about in '99. I believe we may have relatives in common. I have pasted her original e-mail below. Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer. Everyone should test! The more people who do, the better chances we have of breaking down those brick walls! I did the FamilyFinder test and have been busily working with new found cousins! I now have pictures of my great grandparents, and some solid leads on the parents of my great grands. HOWEVER, this is my non-Portuguese mother's family. I had my brother do a 37-marker Y-DNA test and it came back with no matches! Please, guys, test - I need Portuguese cousins to track beyond my great grands!!! If you are researching the USA - in the South circa Civil War, you get tired of hearing the courthouse burned down and no records are available. One county courthouse burned down 4 times!! Some vets who try to obtain a copy of the DD214 have had to deal with the records being destroyed, if memory serves me correctly, by water damage.and so it goes. Also, I tried to get records for who was in WWI and they also were not available. E -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: General Questions about Passports
Where would passport records for someone from Flores most likely reside? Of all my Azorean ancestors, I only have a confirmed location for one of them; Antonio Rodrigues Cardim, who was from Fazenda. His wife, Maria Incarnacion Freitas (Coehlo??) is only listed as being from the Flores. According to the 1900 and 1910 censii sheets, they came to the US in 1880, 1881 or 1882. Regarding the comments about military service records being lost, there was a huge fire at the National Personel Records Center, in 1973. 75-80% or the records were lost for the Army and Air Force. http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/fire-1973.html Later, Robert -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Robert, They could sail from any of the 3 ports (Ponta Delgada on S. Miguel, Angra on Terceira, or Horta on Faial). Horta is the closest to Flores. They are not online as of yet. I can’t make the second name of mother out. Single age 22. The rest is a bit fuzzy for me to make out but it does say he is going to the US and I am not sure of the ships name. If you can make it out you may find him on the passenger list arriving. http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/PASSAPORTES-PDL-1903-1905/PASSAPORTES-PDL-1903-1905_item1/P61.html He used Jose Pedro Tavares on the passport and when he got her he became known as Pedro Tavares. I am researching Pedro Tavares born 1883 in Agua de Pau, San Miguel and have been unable to find him in the passport files or ship passenger lists that are available. According to the 1930 US Census, he arrived in the US in 1904 (his wife provided that information to the census enumerator). His older brother Jose was born in AdP in 1882. He received a passport 5 June 1904, but I think he did not use it. Jose was married in AdP in November 1906, had a large family, and presumably never left. It seems to me that if Pedro was going to leave the Azores, he would have gotten a passport with his brother and likely travelled together. Thanks!
