That's right! Cheri has been the driving force for our little group

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Anyone heard of AncestrybyDNA?

2012-09-26 Thread Vivian Christy
I did the Ancestry DNA test when they have me a promotional amount of 9.00.  It
is surprising as I have 4 matches all portuguese and the ones that have large
trees on Ancestry.com they will actually tell you the persons you match at on
your trees.  So I was surprised because they were correct in saying it was my
4th cousin on one match and it is my fourth cousin.  We are now communicating
through Ancestry.  So the one advantage to Ancestry is they have my Tree and
the Trees of the other people and they can find the match for you.  Depending
on how much information you have in your tree.  So I might do both AncestryDNA
for my family and also FTDNA that I have already.

A lot of times names that you are looking for in your family can be so many it
is to hard to put them all down.  Also because of the naming practices of the
Portuguese you never know what your going to come up with.  I need to update my
FTDNA sites with my Gedcom but have not done that yet.  So chances are I might
have more relatives to find..

I know I match a Bob Ross but have not heard back from him yet.  He is on the
Azores List.

Thanks,

In my own view, Genealogical DNA testing is best done through a company
that has at least two factors in its favor: 1) a significant database of
participants to use to compare to your own DNA sample, and 2) a proven track
record.

Family Tree DNA has been around the longer and has a larger participant
database.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Happy 7th Birthday to the Azores Genealogy List!

2012-09-26 Thread Cheri Mello
OK, if you must know ...

I've been at this 20 years. First I was on AOL and ran the Portuguese chat
there with Mel (of YourIslandRoutes), John Vasconcelos, and Linda C who did
the Madeira questions. When the AOL genealogy chats were reconfigured by
AOL, the Portuguese chats went to LusaWeb. Chats eventually had their
day. Lists/listservs were taking over. Most genealogy lists were housed
on Rootsweb. The Rootsweb systems have their rules and regulations. One
thing you cannot do on Rootsweb is attach a file so others can look at it.
If Portuguese is not your native language, that makes it really hard to
figure out those records. There were also other problems as well. Eloise
Cadinha asked me to start another list. I contacted some genealogy admins
on Yahoo Groups and Google Groups and went with Google. Eloise was the
first member and I was the 2nd! (She must be a quick typist)!

I'm sure person 1000 is wondering what they've started! I just thought
1000 was a neat number and realized our list is 7 years old, so I posted
the milestones. Not to get kudos from all of you. So we don't drive
person 1000 off the list, I will tell the 975 of you who have not said
anything that you are quite welcome, and let's all get back to genealogy :)

*What Cheri fails to mention is that her efforts predate the Azores List by
at least 10 years when she was the driving force behind the Portuguese

Azores List, A LESSER PERSON WOULD HAVE GIVEN UP.

2012-09-26 Thread Mike
I got turned onto this group by Cheri herself, when I wrote an email to the
FTDNA website she responded to me, we spkoe on the phone for over an hour
and I learned a lot, soon after I was using this group, I had my DNA tested
which I never thought of before. In the short time I've been a member of
this group you have helped me find my family in Piedade, Lajes do Pico,
Pico which made it grow by a bunch. Found out I am related to Doug da Rocha
Homes and his father. This group and all its members are such a wealth of
knowledge that thank you doesn't seem to be enough.
May it continue to grow, may I continue to learn and may you continue to
teach, my best,
Mike

OK, got it. The answer is maybe. Just like you can't put a Ford air filter
in a Toyota. But depending on the lab, FTDNA may be able to take partial
results and then test your DNA for the rest. And sometimes FTDNA may not
want results from a particular lab (standards issues).

As of right now, FTDNA can NOT take Ancestry's autosomal (Family Finder
results), nor do they take Ancestry's mtDNA results. They will take SOME
of Ancestry's Y-DNA results and the customer has the option to upgrade to
37 markers. FTDNA CAN take 23 and Me's Relative Finder Results if it was
run on their version 3 chip. If it was on their v.2 chip, they have to
retest some of the DNA.

I really think that for people who are considering DNA testing, they should
go with Family Tree DNA (FTDNA). They traditionally hold their Holiday
Sale in December. They never tell us admins what goes on sale, but they
usually have some Y-DNA on sale, and lately they have been having their
Family Finder on sale as well.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Happy 7th Birthday to the Azores Genealogy List!

2012-09-26 Thread Denise
Keep up the good work Cheri! I'm proud to also be a member since the beginning
and have gone from asking questions to helping out! I remember when I couldn't
read a document and the wonderful advice you have me, now I'm more than happy
to help others read theirs. Giving back is a great thing, happy anniversary
everyone!!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name of other church near Bretanha

2012-09-26 Thread John Raposo
I am a descendant of a Francisco Raposo and Maria de S. José from Bretanha.
However, he was from Ginetes and I believe that she was from Relva. I am on
vacation and do not have access to my genealogy materials right now. I will
have access in about a week and will get back to you. If it is the same couple
then we are `cousins´. The Lindo Cabrals are definitely from Bretanha. I have
them in my data base. Before the first years of the 20th century all records
were kept in Ajuda. After that, Remédios and Pilar were became suffragan
parishes of Ajuda with their own set of books. Today, the Freguesia da Bretanha
is Ajuda only. Pilar and Remédios are separate Freguesias and Paróquias. I hope
this helps.

As I said before I been helping someone with their Cabral Lindo genealogy. I am
not having any luck in finding them in Ajuda de Bretanha. So what is the other
churches near there were they could be?  I can't even find my Francisco Raposa
and Maria Sao Jose.  --
