You know that RR doesn´t list Leonor Manuel as daughter of João Afonso, o
Velho, but Miguel Corte Real does and says that she married Antonio
Fernandes Furtado who according to RR married Águeda Afonso.

I’ve been looking through all the baptism records of Faial da Terra from
1555 to 1700 and noticed that it´s possible that Antonio Fernandes Furtado
married twice.

Does MCR mention any notarial document to prove his marriage with Leonor
Manuel?

After researching all baptisms and godparents in Faial da Terra in this
time period I believe that João Roiz Monte (b. 18 dec 1605 – CCA #50) is
the son of Antonio Afonso and Francisca Roiz, paternal grandson of Pedro
Cordeiro, o velho, and Francisca Jorge, and maternal grandson of Amador do
Monte and Branca Manuel.

I am curious about the notarial documentation used to prove this

De Mr. Sellars:

You might want to look at the following for possible clues:

António José Machado, [son of  José Caetano Machado and Ana Maria] who married
Maria Ursula [daughter of Manuel Furtado Coelho and Ana Ursula] Lajes das
Flores on 4 Feb 1836.

António José Coelho [son of José Coelho of Corvo and Rita Pimentel] married  on
1 Mar 1813 in Santa Cruz das Flores to Rita Joaquina [daughter of Manuel
Pereira Machado and Ana Pimentel]

António José dos Santos [son of Francisco José dos Santos and Ana Pimentel]
married in Santa Cruz on 26 Nov 1832 to Rita São José do Coração de Jesus
[daughter of Manuel Pereira Machado and Maria de São José]

Since Mr. Ventura did not have the Machado clue when h searched on your behalf
you might want to ask him to have another look with the new information, Is
there a Francisca born c. 9 May 1842 in Flores to a Machado family?

Goof luck. I am sorry that I cannot be of more help.

Would any one on this list have any information for/on a FRANCES MACHADO born
c: May 9, 1842 Flores Azores ?

She is my great grand Mother.  Family tradition says she had a deformed hand
and her parents sent her over to the States for medical treatment for the hand.
It is believed she took on the surname of the family she was staying with here
in the States which was JOSEPH and was AKA Fannie Joseph.

She married a Manuel Lewis September 14, 1868 in Boston , Mass.  using the name
Frances Joseph and listed her father as Antonio Joseph.   Manuel was born c:
July  10, 1834 in Cedros, Santa Cruz , Flores , Azores .  He was a mariner on
whaling ships and when married was a fisherman out of Provincetown Mass.

Six children have been recorded being born to the couple, the first son in
Martha’s Vineyard , Mass. the remainder in Provincetown .  The second child,
first daughter, Mary Catherine b: Aug, 1869  listed on her marriage license her
father as Manuel Lewis, as would be expected but for her mother was listed the
single name MACHADO !   Could this be Frances birth family name?

Joao Ventura, a genealogist on this list, searched the Flores records for this
Joseph family line with out success before I just discovered  the MACHADO
reference, so perhaps some one on this list who has researched the MACHADO line
may be able to shed some light on this brick wall.

Thank you for considering this inquiry:

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: caton or caetano to ashland area, bay area from Flores, then Mass., Also Garcia, Alvernaz or Harvey.

2013-07-17 Thread Lynn
My earliest Azorean immigrant of Caton/Caetano name was Capt. Manuel
(Emanuel) R. Caton to Provincetown, MA., B: 28 May 1862, Santa Maria Isl.,
Died/Lost at Sea with his whole crew @ Dec/Jan 1918 off Florida coast. He
married Ida Silva/Silver, a daughter of Captain Joseph Silva and Rosa
Bernardo Silva. He was known as the Strong man of Provincetown for
supposedly dragging a 400+ pound piece of iron from a P-town shore to his
home. They had 8 children born and at least 4 died before age 5. Those who
made it to adulthood were: William, Frank Fish, Emma F. and maybe Rosa
(unproven).
There were at least 2 other Caton men who made their homes in P-town around
the same time. John, the gardener, is said to have worked for the artist
Charles Webster Hawthorne's property, and the records the artist kept still
exist. His granddaughter have them - mentioning John Caton as sitting for
her grandfather as a general model, probably mostly when weather would not
allow John to do his garden chores. The other man was also named Manuel,
and I think this is the one who is your direct. I am very interested in
learning more about these three Caton men of P-town, as I suspect they were
related somehow. An interesting sidenote: Your Alverez sounds a bit like
my 3x's great grandmother's name of Alves, but I suppose they are
entirely different names - like Johnson and Johnston? Some Caton's are
still in the Cape Cod area, and my research with them is going slowly. I
live in Arizona.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Machado Avila from Sao Jorge to California

2013-07-17 Thread Cheri Mello
Repost for Patricia P, patricia.phillips1 at earthlink.net

I am relatively new to discussion groups through Google.

My Great-Grandfather was Joseph Machado Avila, and I have his birth
location as Sao Jorge, Azores. I understand he went by the Machado last
name when he decided to locate permanently to the United States. My
Mother’s cousin advised me he changed his name to Avila after establishing
himself in business with a gentleman who must have carried the Machado last
name. Initially, the family went by the spelling “Avilla”.

His mother’s name as I understand it was Francisca de Avila. My Great
Grandfather’s death certificate lists the name of his father as Joseph M.
Avila, and his mother’s maiden name is noted as Anna Francis. For a long
time, I understood his name to be Joseph Machado. My Great Aunt Ann Avila
completed the death certificate record. He was born December 25, 1850. He
died March 9, 1924 in Newman, California. He had thirteen children: Nine
boys and four girls. One boy passed away in infancy, William. The last
son was named William Joseph, but the other seven boys carried the middle
name Machado; Daniel, Anthony, Joseph, Manuel, Frank, John, and George.

Regards,

Patricia Phillips

Let me be crystal clear here:

If you have NEVER ordered a DNA test before, order through the Azores DNA
project here: http://goo.gl/TyStn http://goo.gl/TyStn

If you HAVE ordered before and are adding on a different type of test, log
into your DNA page and order from the Order an Upgrade (orange button in
the upper right corner). And make sure you are in the Azores DNA project
(look at your home page when signed in...left column will tell you if you
are in the Azores DNA project).

The admins CAN NOT help you if you are not in the Azores DNA project. We
can't see your page. We can't plead on your behalf. We can't upload your
Gedcom. We can't map you.

Please, please, please make sure you are in the project!

And for those of you with pedigrees stretching back about 200 on most of
your lines and don't think you need DNA testingPlease consider testing.
Many of you look up stuff in your genealogy programs and help others on this
list with the paper trail. You can help scientifically by testing your DNA
as some of you can pinpoint where the matches are occurring. Those whose
paper trails don't go back very far can be helped by the process of
elimination.
