[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: MtDNA Haplogroup J
Patricia, I'm also included in the J group and one of it is subdivisions; I have done the Full Sequence for my mtDNA one year ago and did not find a single match until today. We are a very small part of the Azores population, around 5.48%, based on a study done a few years ago. If you are interested in the study, email me privately. She is a part of the Family Tree DNA Azores Project but her results haven't appeared on the MtDNA results page. She belongs to Haplogroup J and her earliest known ancestor in the female line is Anna de Jesus Pavão, who married Francisco Sousa and whose daughter, Rosa de Jesus, was called a native of Ribeirinha, when her children were baptized at Nossa Senhora da Estrela, Ribeira Grande, São Miguel, beginning in 1868. [AZORES-Genealogy] Summer Sale Update
Easy stuff first. They don't know what they will be putting on sale or if it will include upgrades or not. They'll cross that bridge when they get to it. Now the big questionWHEN??? Not now. Most likely later. They have a new piece of equipment coming and some other new lab stuff coming. They do get bogged down in Quality Control and they are investing in speeding up this process. So if the equipment is to come in June 14th, for example, will it? Or will it arrive June 30? There are logistics to deal with and then training on the new machine, etc, etc. They don't want to have a sale when they are getting used to new equipment. So we need to think that the sale will be later in the summer. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Anyone researching Antonio do Monte/Agada Rapozo Achada/Nordestinho?
John, Eliseu, and Aaron, Last night I worked in the baptismals for 1751-1770. I started at 1756 as I lucked out by clicking on the exact page that had a do Monte on it. I then went forward a few years. This is what I observed: There were two distinct way the records were noted. One couple listed as Miguel do Monte and Thereza Furtada, the Thereza was always noted as being from Fayal (NS Graca) or some variation of that. The other couple which was listed as Miguel do Monte Mancebo and Thereza Furtada, both individuals were always listed as being from Achada. I remember asking George Pacheco years ago about this term Mancebo and he said it means the younger, similar to how Americans use Junior. I noticed that the couple without Mancebo had no baptismal records after 1758. All the other entries were for Miguel do Monte Mancebo. I decided this must mean the older couple was no longer able to have kids and possibly one of them died. So off to the Obitos I went where I found the answer to the mystery of the two Miguel do Monte and Thereza Furtada's. You will find Thereze Furtada's death record (img 25, bottom left) at this link: http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-ND-ACHADA-O-1753-1781/SMG-ND-ACHADA-O-1753-1781_item1/P25.html Thereza died at the age of 50 on 15 January (?) 1662. She is listed as the wife of Miguel do Monte. http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-ND-ACHADA-O-1753-1781/SMG-ND-ACHADA-O-1753-1781_item1/P25.html Then, Miguel do Monte's death record is image 29, left hand side of the page: http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-ND-ACHADA-O-1753-1781/SMG-ND-ACHADA-O-1753-1781_item1/P29.html Miguel is listed as widow of Thereza Furtada. He is 72 years old. He died 16 Jul 1764...so he even outlived wife #3! I'll go back later this weekend and sort out the rest of the children. I found these listed as by Miguel do Monte Mancebo: Maria b. 4 may 1756 (img 39) Manoel and Izabel (twins), b 9 May 1759 (img 59) Antonio, b. 25 Jan 1762 (img 64) These by Miguel do Monte, the elder: Izidorio b. 4 Mar 1755 (img 30) Barbara b. 23 Jul 1758 (img 55) (This was the last child that I found for them) Mel -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores. Very good work Mel !!. I have one record that does say mancebo with a note attached. There are small periods in Achada which are unreadable, perhaps Miguel mancebo married in one of those, or somewhere else. That obito does say Jan 15- 1762. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Anyone researching Antonio do Monte/Agada Rapozo Achada/Nordestinho?
I noticed the marriage records of Achada are in tatters in 1755 and the last entry is May-1755; and 1756 and 1757 are missing entirely. As we discussed, there is a Miguel born to MIguel Monte and Maria Costa, 1734, so Miguel mancebo probably married another Teresa Furtada circa 1755, shortly after May 1755, and this would coincide with baptism of first child in May 1756. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Anyone researching Antonio do Monte/Agada Rapozo Achada/Nordestinho?
Mel, JR, Aaron, By the way great search work Mel!!! I would like to have more free time to work on this. :) I am hunting down every MONTE I can find on Ernesto do Canto Index. I have done Achada, Achadinha and doing Vila do Nordeste. Until now I have not find any MANCEBO. Regarding to the meaning of the word MANCEBO at that time it is plausible that it would have the sense of junior. Junior started to be used (at least) in the 19th century to distinguish father and son with the same name… Mancebo, at that time meant also the boys turning 14 and being able to go to serve in the army. In the beginning the word meant “slave”, so we can assume the main sense of the word “mancebo” as someone who is dependant of someone else. So we may accept “mancebo” as “younger”. In our research it would mean that 2 MIGUEL MONTE existed at the same time in the same place! So, at least they were of the same family. Would they be father and son, or oncle and nephew, or cousins, or… ? Until now I have learnd that there are (at least) MONTE groups in almost everywhere: Ribeira Grande: Ribeira Seca, Maia, Porto Formoso, Achada, Achadinha, Vila de Nordeste, Ponta Garça, Ponta Delgada… The big question is to understand if they belong to just one and same family… I will be posting my findings in my web page. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Graciosa - NS da Luz - Marriage Record
The father's name of the bride on the first marriage is Capitao Antonio Fogaça da Silva. The first and middle name combination of Antonio Fogaça seems to be have a fair amount of occurrence in Luz and Sao Matheus, and probably the other parishes of Guadalupe and Santa Cruz. I myself have several Antonio Fogaça in my tree, including that of an Antonio Fogaça da Silva from Sao Matheus who was married to Joao Clara de Sao Domingo. I also have have two Antonio Fogaça de Ataide's, and an Antonio Fogaça Neto. I am not sure where the groom Manuel de Bettencourt Avila is from. It does not appear to state anything in particular other than from the parish the marriage was in. I looked through the marriage indexes from Santa Cruz and did not find his parents, so I do not think they were from there. Probably are from Luz but try Sao Matheus and Guadalupe. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Anyone researching Antonio do Monte/Agada Rapozo Achada/Nordestinho?
To all, Thanks! But, Dan should get part of the credit. He was the one who noticed that I had married off Miguel do Monte, the son, to his step mother (oops!)I know that I am my own cousin a couple of times, but this would be just a little too close. LOL JR-that gap in the Achada records is problematic. It's possible they married in a different village, but not having those 2-3 years to compare to is frustrating. I think we can safely put it somewhere around 1755. Eliseu, Thanks for the definition of Mancebo. I didn't know about the definition pertaining to eligibility for military service. I saw it with another of my families where the father and son were still alive. I was curious if in your search in Cantos index if you came across the Antonio do Monte who also had a son Miguel do Monte in Achada who started this whole conversation? It's interesting that they are so widespread. I need to look through some of the work in later years. Besides Miguel do Monte, the father and the son, and this Antonio do Monte, I did not come across the surname otherwise. And, now to confuse this whole mess. I realized last night as I was piecing all the families together that Antonio dos Reis, daughter of Miguel do Monte I and Maria da Costa, married Manoel Correia. I would like to verify that Antonio Correia was the son of Antonio Correia and Barbara de Almeyda. Is that what others have? If so, he is the brother of my ancestor, Estavao Correia (m. Anna de Mello) I have some of the other siblings of the Correia family if anyone is interested. I think I might have an extra clue in this mystery. Estevao's brother, Mathias Correa, married Maria de Mello. I'm seeing her in records as being from Fenais da Luz.
