RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Have you uploaded your DNA results to GEDMatch.com?
Hi Marilyn,I'm still learning about it, too, but know enough to explain it.Basically, you get your autosomal test done, which you did, and download the files for each of your kits. Then you go to the gedmatch.com website and create an account.Right away you upload these files which contain the "raw data" and right away you can start looking at all the various ways to view your ethnic identity, plus you can compare right away your results to another person or to your own kits you administer. Once enough time has allowed them to process your uploaded data, such as two days, then you can compare your test kit results to everyone else in their database. You no longer need to know in advance their kit numbers. It just searches and finds the results for you.But studying and digesting these results is what I'm just getting into more now. Interpreting the data comes with practice. For instance, Antonio Faria has been comparing his results with amazing conclusions that I am still trying to figure out for myself. So it's very simple to do, but then you have to play around with it to get the most out of it.Boa noite,Doug da Rocha HolmesPico Terceira Genealogist=Get ready for NFL Fantasy Football and join me in the newly created Azores Genealogist League. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Abreviation list
I like books, but, I don't necessarily *need* a library; I just need the one book with information I'm looking for. Apparently, you missed the point I was making, which was that you already have too many abbreviations (two pages are two pages too many). It defeats the point of having abbreviations. Personally, I like to keep things neat (and simple), that way I don't get obsessive-compulsive about how many abbreviations I own. :) Anyway, you can always email me if you get one you can't figure out. I say that because no matter how many of anything you might have, there'll always be one you didn't :D ~ On Monday, August 11, 2014 7:23:12 PM UTC-4, Eliseu Pacheco da Silva wrote: Hi Dano, Would you please share your list with us?! [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Looking for Fernandes Baleeiro (Surname unknown)
Albert, Doug has given you some tips, but, you still need more info to be able to find your ancestor. I'm not sure how you came by the name, Fernandes Baleeiro, but as Doug has mentioned, *Fernandes* is normally used as a surname.* Baleeiro,* on the other hand, translates as *whaler,* and, may be an *alcunha, *that is, a nickname based on his occupation. You say that he emigrated to Bahia in 1726, do you know the exact date of his arrival? Or, how long he lived in Bahia? Did he marry in Bahia? Did he die in Bahia? Once you have some of that basic info, you can consider tracing him back to the land of his birth - whether that be the Azores, or, somewhere else. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Portuguese Genealogy Workshop: Saturday, September 13, Rhode Island
Just a reminder for the genealogy workshop. They are filling up quickly, so if you plan on going, register as soon as possible. When all seats are filled, registration is closed. Here's the original announcement for those who missed it. On Saturday, September 13th, from 8:30 - 4pm, George Pacheco and I are going to present a Portuguese genealogy class in Rhode Island. It's going to be fast and furious! The morning session will be using American sources to find your freguesia. I will do a real scaled down DNA lecture and software review too (or that's my plan right now). After lunch, George will do the Portuguese records, and what to look for and then we will be off to the lab for the hands-on session where you can look at the CCA records and get assistance! It's similar to Salt Lake, but on a much smaller scale since we have only 6 ot 6.5 hours to present everything. $40 includes morning coffee and a light lunch. Because the announcement was designed as a graphic it'll get thrown into people's spam filters (or the Google Group will throw me in the spam filter for sending a graphic! It's not picky! I've found myself in there before!) So if you want the detailed information, email me directly at gfscherim at gmail.com and I'll get the info to you. Thanks! RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for Fernandes Baleeiro (Surname unknown)
No doubt Baleeiro (found in records also as Balieiro) came from being a nickname, but it's also a real surname and usually from Graciosa. For some proof of my assertion it's a surname I take for example one Agueda Baleeiro of Velas from the 1500s, whom I have tentatively connected to one Pedro Goncalves Baleeiro, but just a hunch. We don't find women using such a name as her alcunha, so must be her chosen surname.Searching for all instances of Baleeiro in my database, I did find a Fernandes Baleeiro on Terceira in the 1600s.I'm writing as my database is searching. Now I find I actually have a Fernandes Baleeiro from Graciosa in the 1600s which could be the parents or cousins of Alberto's ancestor.OK, searching is done and I have 72 people by this surname from Graciosa, Pico, Terceira, and Sao Jorge. I have none from any other islands, but that means nothing because if they are not connected to Pico or Terceira or part of a family that I have entered for some other reason, I simply skip them and move onto a record that interests me. These named Baleeiro are from the early 1500s to the 1800s, so it's an old name. Another woman was Catarina Baleeiro.I found many Fernandes Baleeiro from Graciosa, so have little doubt this is Albert's ancestral connection. I know there are many Graciosa researchers on this list and so a decent chance they will be willing to share information.I will give you one which you can keep in mind for the future once you find out the other necessary details that you must have to progress in your research.Manuel Fernandes Baleeiro was a nobleman (Fidalgo da Casa Real) and native of Santa Cruz on Graciosa Island. My note has him living in 1720 and I have estimated he was born in about 1685. Since he was a noble, there will be records from the King of Portugal and available from the Torre do Tombo is Lisboa. His father by the same name was also a nobleman as was his grandfather. Whether your family ties into this noble branch, who knows? Eliseu's list differs from the abbreviations I've come across in my research. I'm not sure from what source Mr. Ramos is getting his information, but, there are several inconsistencies in his list from what I have found in my research, eg... Agostino (should be Agostinho) it does reflect the ho in the abbreviation - on the other hand, he lists the month of August as Agusto (should be Agosto) - there are other misspellings, as well, which I won't go into detail here and now. As for the abbreviations, their accuracy can only be substantiated by the actual documents they were taken from - which, as we have all found in our research, vary with the scribe who is producing the record. Good one, Eliseu. :-)And by the way, I didn't study your list carefully, but didn't notice any mistakes there. No doubt it will be helpful to beginners who start to tackle the older records of the 1600s and before. Basically, you get your autosomal test done, which you did, and download the files for each of your kits. Then you go to the gedmatch.com website and create an account. Right away you upload these files which contain the raw data and right away you can start looking at all the various ways to view your ethnic identity, plus you can compare right away your results to another person or to your own kits you administer. Once enough time has allowed them to process your uploaded data, such as two days, then you can compare your test kit results to everyone else in their database. You no longer need to know in advance their kit numbers. It just searches and finds the results for you. But studying and digesting these results is what I'm just getting into more now. Interpreting the data comes with practice. For instance, Antonio Faria has been comparing his results with amazing conclusions that I am still trying to figure out for myself. So it's very simple to do, but then you have to play around with it to get the most out of it.
