Re: _[AZORES-Genealogy]_Re:_Porciúncula

2014-08-16 Thread Kalani N
hahaha. I mentioned this to my Mexican co-worker after I responded here.
And when I revealed the entire name (I'm surprised that this time I
remembered from memory) I explained that I worked in a building that listed
the ENTIRE name. The whole thing was written in Spanish & in English. Not
sure if that was something used in a proclamation or not.

But my co-worker revealed that she does remember the old movies that
referred to LA as "El Pueblo." That was when it was part of Mexico, and of
course before that part of Spain.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: USCIS genealogy program

2014-08-16 Thread Lester
It cost $20 for the index search and $20 for a copy of the 3 documents in
the file, a couple of postage stamps and a little time. I got a copy of my
grandfather's Certificate of Naturalization and I found out that he arrived
in Boston, Massachusetts on 15 June 1904 aboard the SS Canopic. Was it
worth it? YES!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: USCIS genealogy program

2014-08-16 Thread Cheri Mello
If memory serves me correctly, I had my immigrants' marriage date on a
creased piece of paper. The 2nd papers for naturalization said the place
of marriage was "New Bedford, Connecticut." No freguesia. So I got up one
morning and started calling all the Catholic churches in New Bedford,
Massachusetts. First church wasn't around in 1905. The 2nd church I
called was St. John the Baptist. I gave the priest the marriage date and
yes, they were married there. And not only that, the church had the
freguesia. That was my 25th document on these people and even though I
have more paperwork on them since then, it remains the only document to
date that I have found that has the actual freguesia.

Yes, it was worth it. A relative had told me my immigrants got married in
Rhode Island. That search was fruitless, even with the date. Even though
my ancestor got her states confused, I knew the city was right.

By-the-way, on the 2nd papers she said she had sailed on the "Pensailor" to
America. On the last page it was stamped by the U.S. Government that they
searched the 1901 manifest for the Peninsular and were unable to find her.
But they granted her citizenship anyways (she was in her 70s by then). And
she was on the manifest. It's just that her older sister was doing the
talking and give the family alcunha and not the surname.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Sao Sebastiao Baptism 1689

2014-08-16 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Hi

I found this baptism and recognize that the format is not the same as
others. Maria is baptized on 25 Sep 1689 The names of what I believe is the
parents is at the bottom (Maria Correia wife of Andre Teixeira) But what I
cannot find it the word Filha in the record. Was Maria a foundling and give
to the care of Maria Correia?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Sao Sebastiao Record 1671

This record is a baptism on 30 Nov 1671. The parents are Andre Teixeira and
Maria dos and at a quick glance looks like Costa but could this be an
earlier way of writing Correia?

Did you mean back in the 1800s? Or today? I know that in Brazil, names
with -on is very, very common. I wouldn't say it is the same with
Porciuncula. lol

Attached is a cleaner(?)/better baptismo record for my great grandfather.
Maybe someone can see who his godparents were. I see the name Manuel but
that could be some witness or the priest.
