Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's new family trees (Gedcom) is up

2014-09-10 Thread Cheri Mello
If you marked it private and then made a Gedcom and then told FTDNA to make
it private again, it's like a double negativeit negates what you've
already done and UNDOES it.

When you export your Gedcom, do 10 generations then upload it to FTDNA.

I got 4 hours of sleep last night. Hope Kalani is still up. If not,
someone will answer you tomorrow.

Or people living and showing their birthdate when you have it private. I
also noticed (not sure if someone mentioned this already) that both names
will not show up for example Manuel de Medeiros Correia it only shows up as

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's new family trees (Gedcom) is up

2014-09-10 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
They did Bata test the family tree and Cheri was in the loop to review it.
Cheri sent it to me to play with and when I sent my comments back to her
they were almost the same as hers. It appears that the programmer's at FTDNA
did not hear what we told them. Because it was a Beta test I could only look
at the Tree Cheri had and could not look at other trees from the FF matches.
The problems I found are no comparison to the ones we are now having with
Names showing up as private because there is no death date entered even if
the birth date was 1590 and being able to correct the names and edit.

FTDNA seemed to have overreached with this Family Tree function.

It's clear they took no input from any genealogist nor thought beyond the

Hi Denise,

I do not seem to recall that we ever established a connection. I know we both
have people coming from Achada. We do have a common match with George Mello So
we are related somewhere.

This new family tree thing on FTDNA is very frustrating in trying to track down
connections.

In looking on the admin page I was able to find one kit (91556) which you
administer. Is there another?

Hi Cheri,

I have the issue of not connecting due to spellings I guess. I have tied in
with Altino and Rick, among many others on the list, and they do not show up as
connections. Any suggestions?

Yes, your mom doesn't show as a link because you ended with her on that Gedcom.

I had my mom's DNA kit listed as H. Louise. In my Gedcom, she is Helen Louise.
That is why it wouldn't link her. I had to change it. So if have Joe Mello

You can edit names and information for individuals in the Family Tree

In either Family View or Ancestry view, click on the person, click view
profile

The edit button is at the top. You can then correct spelling, names and
birth and death dates.

You can add photos.

I doubt that FTDNA is going to fix the spelling issue on their end, so I'm
going through my page and fixing them.

Denise,

Is Rick not showing up in your list of DNA relatives, or in the gedcom program?
If it is in the DNA relatives maybe you just didn't get enough of the same DNA.
If it is in the gedcom program I would say they have a great deal of tweaking
to do before their program is usable. I do think they are trying, though.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's new family trees (Gedcom) is up

2014-09-10 Thread luiznoia .
Tish,

I didn't say they didn't solicit input from genealogists, I said the didn't
take the input.

The naming difficulties are not unique to Portuguese research, it's big
problem for any Latin American and Scandanavian naming forms also.

You need to email one of the admins for help. Include the kit number and

Oops. I thought Cheri tested the beta version for 4 MONTHS. I thought that
enough time... but, 4 HOURS is probably not enough time. When I was testing
new programs for work we would run both programs for at least a few weeks,
before using the new one. It was a lot of work, but was well worth it.

Silly me...I got confused with the "add relationship" feature. I thought
that when it showed a DNA link with someone in your tree that you clicked
there. Today I went to add myself as my mom's daughter to her tree (I had

there. But the possible link icon was not there today.

I'm sure we will learn how this works someday. :)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's new family trees (Gedcom) is up

2014-09-10 Thread Tish M
Eric,
I don't think your statement is completely true. I have been in contact
with ftDNA today. Cheri has already stated that she did 4 months of Beta
testing. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink. In
this case, you can tell the designers what you don't like about their
program, but you can't make them change it. Here is what they said:

"Our beta test was completed by people with both computer and genealogy
experience, then we released the Family Tree to about 10% of our most
regular users for further testing. Sometimes all of the best planning and
testing still does not catch all of the problems, unfortunately.

We are getting much of the same feedback regarding names and sizing of the
tree and I will add your comments to the mix. Thank you!"

I then thanked them for the quick response and concerns.

This was their reply:

Tish -- Anytime! I love getting honest feedback from our customers,
especially when it backs up what we've been telling the designers. Thank
you for *your* time!

It's clear they took no input from any genealogist nor thought beyond the

Edgar, I went into my file and changed the mistakes also. I had the double
surnames and I just deleted the middle one and it comes out alright. My
problem is that the women with the given name and a religious name was not
showing on the main page. I went it and put the Sao Joao or de Jesus in
their surname field and it comes out correctly on the main 'tree'.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's new family trees (Gedcom) is up

2014-09-10 Thread Seekgene via Azores Genealogy
I just never put in "de" or "da" in my family tree or gedcom names for
this very reason. The reason is to avoid this very problem. "De" or "da" is
only a preposition and it only means "of".

In a message dated 9/10/2014 2:57:29 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time,

When I write a surname into my program I try to avoid the issue of
screwing up the surname by entering the "d'" or "de", "do" etc on the first
line
name.

For example...

I enter "José de" on the Given name of the FTM program.
And "Paiva" on the surname.

I wonder if by entering "de" on the middle name section is what is causing
it not to match.

Yes, your mom doesn't show as a link because you ended with her on that
Gedcom.

I had my mom's DNA kit listed as H. Louise. In my Gedcom, she is Helen
Louise. That is why it wouldn't link her. I had to change it. So if have
Joe Mello and you have him as Jose de Melo, with the same birth and
everything, it may not show the link. Altino's my dad's 2nd cousin, but I
have the

2014-09-10 Thread Tish M
Denise,
Is Rick not showing up in your list of DNA relatives, or in the gedcom
program? If it is in the DNA relatives maybe you just didn't get enough of
the same DNA. If it is in the gedcom program I would say they have a great
deal of tweaking to do before their program is usable. I do think they are
trying, though.

Thank you Eric for your comment. I have my names entered a certain way - So
let's say I have José de Paiva (the de is showing up in the middle name field
for some reason) and you have the same person as Jose Paiva - then we will not
link because of the difference in his name? That is what I am trying to figure
out. So for me I have no need to change the names in the edit field because I
have no idea how someone else would record the name.

Rick and I have a known connection that we documented years ago but he is not
showing up in my list of relatives. I'm just wondering if this could be why.

Steve,

Sorry, the Anthony Sears stuff was for another Steve. Unless I click the
name on the message it only shows you with first name.

You said in a previous message that you are assuming that your great
grandmother Filomena b. 1851 is attached to the Jose Thomas Carneiro
family, and this is all built off that.

I'm proposing that this Filomena Carneiro may actually be the one your
looking for.

I know you're scrupulous, but I just want to be sure about the death
 identities for the following reasons:

These two deaths are a major find because it means my great
grandmother, Filomena b. 1851, cannot be their daughter, yet I have
constructed my descendants around this assumption. (Talk about shaking a
 big tree).

That is, they can't be her parents since José Tomás Pimentel Carneiro
died on ? Jun 1844 and his wife Isabel de Jesus (Isabel Tomásia) died 16
 Apr 1850.

Indeed, my family records have always disagreed with this parentage
(plus I've never been able to find Filomena's baptism record). I had been
persuaded by other genealogical sources when I first started in 2012.

Now eliminating Jose and Isabel as Filomena's parents fits with a
revised scenario since I'm somewhat confident that I have found Filomena's
 real parents recently.

However, I found no records in which Isabel de Jesus is listed as
Isabel Thomasia. I found three children for her as Isabel de Jesus:

2014-09-10 Thread Tish M
Hi Rick,
I will write to ftDNA. I like the old display better, too. I doubt they
will go back because they have invested in this tree. I wonder if it has
anything to do with DNAGedCom or if it is just a coincidence.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Private in so many of the trees

2014-09-10 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Hi Tish,

I just tried looking at a tree from one of my matches and am getting the same
results. I urge you to contact FTDNA. To do this from your home FTDNA page use
the feedback button which is at the upper right side of you page. This new
family tree page has a lot of problems and the only way to fix it is to have
everyone let them know. I did this yesterday about the general display and the
way names appeared and told them I liked the old trees much better.

Hi,

I understand having private for living persons, but it seems that ftDNA has
criteria saying "if there is no date of death, make the person private". This
makes no sense, as it makes it impossible to view more than half of the trees.

Hi Cheri,

I have the issue of not connecting due to spellings I guess. I have tied in
with Altino and Rick, among many others on the list, and they do not show up as
connections. Any suggestions?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name check Jose Tomas Pimentel Carneiro 1779, Flores

2014-09-10 Thread Steve
Eric,

For some reason I cannot see any posting in this thread containing "Did you
get my results on the Anthony Sears Recording search?" except below in your
own posting. Maybe it's a browser issue, but who is Anthony Sears?

As for the Filomena baptism 1850 you refer to, I don't see how that could
be her because the parents and grandparents are entirely different people:

Filomena
b. 27 Dec 1850
Joaquim Pimentel Carneiro
 Joao Pimentel Carneiro
 Ana Maria
Mariana Julia
 Joao Pimentel Valadao
 Maria de Jesus

In addition, I can find no records where Isabel de Jesus is referred to as
Isabel Tomasia, except in her death record -- true?
