Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Tree Maker FTM 16 Problem

2014-11-13 Thread Bigal429 via Azores Genealogy
I'm getting a new computer on Friday and I have Family Tree Maker 2006. If
I buy the latest FTM software will the backups that I made with FTM 2006
work. I would assume that FTM 16 is the latest version.

First, even with diversified destinations (cloud, hard drive, USB, DVD,
etc.), you will want at least two different methods of backup. I have seen
many programs getting upgraded/patched and either not actually backing up
files or, believe it or not, scrambling the content (encryption gone very
bad!)

As for myself:

Mozy:
  cloud based backup

SyncBack Free to:
  32GB SDHC card
  32GB USB Flash drive (periodically)
500GB USB Fire/Waterproof hard drive (sentrysafe)
  8TB NAS Drive (RAID5)
  3TB USB Hard Drive

Program (application):
  FTM to NAS
  Quicken to NAS

Nero Burning ROM:
  Gold layer DVD

Now this is overkill for most people, but I have had problems before to
teach me to be very protective.

One last note, it is also easy to lose track of backups (especially with
the number I keep). Be sure to use encryption on your backups to keep them
private. Just don't lose the passwords!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Age of bride

2014-11-13 Thread herb

This record the left side marriage. Was the bride 18 and groom 46? I've been
trying for several years to locate the brides moms parents. The brides mother
was Maria Mello. Maybe I'm searching the wrong date but it looks to me like the
bride Maria de Jesus was 18 in 1878. So she would have been born on or about
1860. Maybe someone with Mello ancestors from Nordeste can shed some light on
this.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Age of bride

2014-11-13 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
The ages you have 18 and 46 are correct.

My thoughts on why you cannot find them are this and perhaps you have already
done some of these.

Try looking for any births of other children of her parents Francisco Raposo
Gamboa and Maria de Mello I would do this by looking for their marriage and
then go from that date and look for all the children. Once you have found any
other children you can check the gaps between each child for Maria’s birth.

It is possible that there was more than Maria for the family and when the
scribe looked for the birth he got the wrong one and thus the wrong age.

Another possibility is that she gave an older age than she really was so be
sure to check records up to 5 years before the age which is given.

Lastly she could be much older so you have not looked back far enough.

Thanks for your responses. Yeah that's what makes this one a bit of a mystery

Mello. I'm sure it's on the CCA site somewhere. I have never been able to find

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Tree Maker FTM 16 Problem

2014-11-13 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Actually I think the latest version is FTM 2013. FTM 16 is an upgraded version
to FTM 2006. Since then they have had a new version almost every year. The
last one that I bought was FTM 2011. I got tired of the constant upgrades with
FTM and now use another program that is not going to change any time in the
future.

I do not think you would have any problems importing your 2006 files to a new
version. If you keep your old computer running at the same time or if it is
still running you could also save a GEDCOM file which you could transfer to any
GEDCOM supported software.

Do NOT assume anything. FTM 2006 is about 4 versions back and FTM 16 is about 5
or 6 versions back. The latest version is FTM 2014. Normally you can run older
version on Windows 8, except you have to know something about software.
Backups from previous version, sometimes there are compatible. I have not used

BIG and most IMPORTANT one. I have lost the last 2 1/2 years of what I put
on FTM16 on my Windows 7 computer. I had a backup but for some reason that
got erased when we were trying to figure out what was wrong with Windows
 7. Unfortunately we had the backup plugged in when we were doing this and
it erased everything on the disk. Note to self: NEVER do this again!! I
do have all the previous 8 years of entries on my old Windows XP computer
which we put on a memory stick and have been trying reinstall on my Windows
7 computer ; it looks like FTM is installed??? but it only shows this one
file which only has 5 names on it!!

 Any other ideas anyone??

 Thank you.

 E

FTM 2006 won't work on Windows 8 unless you know how to tweak it. You'll
need the latest FTM, or another genealogy software program.

I suggest you be very careful with this line. There are so many Pimentel,
Cabral, and Raposo, that it is easy to get mixed up. And they are all
interrelated and may have added different names or alternates. I found this:

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Age of bride

2014-11-13 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
This record is tempting and close. This is where the search should be for any
brothers or sisters and see how the names are written. Do they agree with this
or are they written different? I would need more evidence before I would say
this record is the one.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Age of bride

2014-11-13 Thread JR
This is the right Maria Richard, I went through 1860, and the marriage did
give a an age that corresponds with this date. In any event, a name like
Gamboa is well known and can mostly be found in Nordeste, Nordestinho,
Achada and Ponta Garca. Francisco Raposo Gamboa and Maria Mello married in
Nordeste, 12 Nov 1855. Years ago I tracked the Gamboas that came out of
Ponta Garca and this is the same line. MInd you, I only found the direct
link today. There must be a t least 20 Francisco Raposo's between Nordeste
and Nordestinho. There is one problem, however: Some records say Maria de
Pimentel. others Victoria de Pimentel. You may have to go through
Nordestinho and Nordeste to make sure there are no others by these names.
Maria de Pimentel and its variants and alternates are extremely common in
Nordeste. But I think an error has made somewhere in the records. Just
keep searching.
