[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Morisson name in Azores, late 18th/early 19th c.

2015-11-02 Thread linda

Eliseu and Angela,

Thank you both so much for your replies. It looks like the Morisson
family was quite mobile, moving readily among the islands. I'll look up
some of those birth and marriage records this evening.

Luis Antonio da Costa Morisson would have been 48 years old when my 4xGGPs
married. My 4xGGF was likely somewhere between 23 to 33, and his father
was already dead. I can speculate that there might have been a business
friendship between them.

I found mention of "Morisson & Companhia" in a list of Casas Exportadoras
de Fructa em Ponta Delgada published in 1864, fifty years after my
ancestors were married. So, at least a faction of the Morisson family was
engaged in international mercantile trade to/from the islands-- albeit much
later in time.

Thanks so much! I'm going to file these bits of information together with
that section of the family, and keep my eyes open for more clues.

:^D

For now I can tell you that Grotas Fundas is a neighbourhood, even
today, on the eastern border of the village of Ponta Garca. Because of the
hills and mountains, the town of Ponta Garca ends there and borders hills
surrounding Ribeira Quente. There is a very nice beach at the bottom that
was actually part of the property of Dr, Agusto Botelho de Simas. It was
his summer home. He was a well known and respected doctor in the 1950-80
era, based in Vila Franca, now deceased. There is a bust of him in the main
square honoring his life and work. The beach is now public with public
access. From there you get fabulous views of the peninsulas jutting out
into the ocean, east and west, and south is the ocean.. And you might even
see whales or dolphins swimming by. Looking east is Ribeira Quente, but its
view is blocked by a huge rolling hills, beautiful in their right. Looking
west is the coastline leading to Vila Franca, easily visible, an
 outstanding view.

The land is rich and suitable for farming and was covered by vineyards
in times past, and I guess that's what made it so attractive to our
ancestors. Apparently, other well known families from the upper class owned
land there. There is a trail, still in use for hikers, that people took in
the past, by foot and donkey from Grotas Fudas to Ribeira Quente. They were
mostly cousins, farm workers and fisherfolk and exchanged produce and
goods. You often read about ancestors that lived in Grotas Fundas or the
place called "Ribeira Quente, limit de fraguesia de Ponta Garca." It was
also the shortest way to Ribeira Quente and Povoacao. Otherwise, you have
to go north, way up to the main road, where essentially you are on top of
hill. There is a long, winding and steep road, called the Guiteria that
starts at Grotas Fundas and makes it way up the main road. It is pastoral
and you might encounter cows on the moo-ve! Sorry couldn't resist. At the
top you will be rewarded with a vista of the whole of Ponta Garca and Vila
 Franca. Take your camera!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Reward for my elusive family member

2015-11-02 Thread "E" Sharp
Over 20 years ago, I promised my mom I would find her mother's baptism
record. I have had other's help me in my search but to no avail. We have
found many of her brothers and sisters but not her record - so when my
children asked me what I wanted for Christmas this year, I told them I
wanted to keep this promise. They all chipped in and through them I am
offering a *$100 (USD) reward or conversion to your currency *if you find
my grandmother's baptism record. If you need a little extra Christmas
money and would like to make this lister very happy, here is the pertinent
information:

*Name: Isabelle Victor -- born after Oct. 1881 and before Jan. 1885 Azores*
*Parents: Antonio Victor and Romana Augusta*
* (they are both from mainland Portugal)*

These parents were circus performers; I have no idea why they went to the
Azores but it seems they travelled to many of the islands performing and
had children born (first one 1870) in Terceira, Faial, Sao Jorge and Sao
Miguel and I do not know where in the Azores Isabelle was born. I do not
need any of her siblings records. If you happen to find one I do not have,
I will send you $25 USD/conversion for the record. If you happen upon the
death record for Romana Augusta who died between 1889-1891, I do not know
where, I will gladly pay $25 for this record.

*Please do not reply to this list!! I will not respond. Send any
questions, etc. to my personal email address bellemarco at gmail dot com*

This would be a great Christmas present for me. Thank you. "E"

 I have a few questions:

 1. What is the story?

I tried to read the section on him in "Familias Antigas Povoação" but
my Portuguese is limited. I only recognize words ...something about
torture, abandon, going to Rome to ask the Pope for forgiveness, walking to
Santiago de Compostela and building a hospital.

 2. What is the controversy?

 3. Is there further study being done on him? What other source
 records exist on him?

 4. Now that we have DNA testing. Is it possible now to prove who he
 was?

 I'm completely fascinated.

 5. Also. Where exactly if Grotas Fundas? I want to go visit this

Looking foward to any information you have on him.

2015-11-02 Thread Manita M
Hola!

Is there anyone on this list that can share more information on the history
and story beyond what JR provided for João Afonso das Grotas Fundas?

I'm heading to Portugal on the 14th and I'm seriously considering a detour
to Benavente, Spain but would like to be armed with more information.

Does anyone have a CCA link to Joao Afonso death record or are you relying
on RR's information?

Where was he born? Does anyone have that record?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Manuel-son of Manuel Silveira of Ribeiras Pico Azores b. 25 Jul 1741

2015-11-02 Thread Evee Silva Kiler
Thank you for the "tip" regarding Ribeiras records and for the other
suggestions. Most of my research has been for Santo Amaro, Pico so far,
but now the earlier ancestors are leading me to other freguesias.

I need some help with the following baptism record:

 http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/PIC-LJ-RIBEIRAS-B-1732-1749/PIC-LJ-RIBEIRAS-B-1732-1749_item1/P74.html

Manuel is the first complete baptism record on the page at the right.

I don't know what the note in the left margin means. It seems to be
the same for most people in this book of baptisms.

This is what I think I see in the baptism record:

Manuel, son of Manuel Silveira Costa???[I can't read the
 mother's name...looks like Rozia da ]
residents of this freguesia parish of Santa Barbara Ribeiras

born 25th day of the month of July 1741 ??? baptism by me [I don't
understand the abbreviation for his "title"] of this church underwritten
and assigned the 30th day of this month and this year.

For godparents: Bartholomu Homem husband of Maria Silveria and Roza da
 [??] wife of So??? Balthazar

I don't understand the writing after Balthazar.

Pretty sketchy, I know, but I am having a terrible time reading the
writing with all the abreviations of this priest, Thome Cardoso Machado???

What I'm looking for, of course, are the names within the record and
any information specific to the individuals...beyond the "boiler-plate"
language that appears in most of the records of this time and place.

I'm looking for Manuel Silveira Costa who was the husband of my 3rd
great grand aunt...Maria Silveira...all of Ribeiras, Pico, I believe.

 Thank you for any help!

Hi!

The Morrisson were spread (at least) in Ponta Delgada, Terceira and Faial.

Muito Obrigado,

Assunto: [AZORES-Genealogy] Morisson name in Azores, late 18th/early 19th c.

hi all,

Can anyone provide information on this name/family?

Luis Antonio da Costa Morisson signed as a witness to the marriage of one of my
4xGGP's on Terceira in 1813, and I'm very curious as to what the connection
could possibly have been.

I know there were English and American merchants and their families in the
islands during this period, but the references I've checked (Familias
Faialenses and the book by Francis M. Rogers) don't include the name. If
anyone can suggest other potential leads, I'd appreciate it too.

Here is the record, in case any one is curious to see it:

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/TER-AH-SANTABARBARA-C-1813-1828/TER-AH-SANTABARBARA-C-1813-1828_item1/P4.html

right side (Antonio Machado Fagundes and Victoria Angelica)

The marriage took place in Santa Barbara, where much of my family was situated.
All three of the witnesses were from Angra and do not appear to be relatives--
all unusual for the time and place in what I've seen in the other marriage
records for my family there.

thanks in advance for any help with this little mystery,

Linda
