[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: People with Faial ancestry

2016-01-21 Thread Betty Fredericks
Sorry I haven't participated in this Group for a while.* I just
wanted to mention that my husband's great-grandmother was born ~1870 on
Faial. She was Philomena Augusta da ROSA.She married there and they
had their 5+ children there. Her husband was Francisco MOURA, reportedly
from Sao Miguel.Bob is from the daughter, Mrs. Elsita "Elsie" (MOURA)
PACHECO, always of Cambridge, MA, after marrying. We are now in our
70's and on Soc. Sec., and cannot afford DNA tests. One child of
"Grandma Elsie" is still living, but - not interested.

Betty (on genealogy and on-line I use my previous name,
but I am also Mrs. Pacheco)

*
I've been spending a lot of time on the Facebook group for the Azores.
I'll post something about the MEDEIROS cousin later in the day.
(Involving another daughter of "Frank" and "Phoebe" (da ROSA) MOURA.
And, Laurindo da ROSA was the father, and Phoebe also had 2 brothers in
Cambridge, MA.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Francisco MOURA, Sao Miguel, marr. ~1890 on Faial to Philomena da ROSA

2016-01-21 Thread Betty Fredericks
Hello,

For several reasons I might not have participated here for almost a year,
or since last year. So, I just thought I'd mention the names I'm
interested in for my husband's family-tree.

Can only go back to Joao and Jacintha (COSTA) PACHECO from the village of
Sao Roque beside Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel. All I know is that they had
2 sons, Antonio and Manuel, during the 1880's there. "Tony" b~1885 was
said to have come to MA/US ~1905 as a 20-yr-old. IF I found the right
Antonio, he was said to have come over to stay with his brother, Manuel,
then in New Bedford."Tony" very soon was in Cambridge, MA, were he
married in 1912. ... From old newspaper reports, I found out that in
1921, Manuel was also living in Cambridge. He was a "bartender" by
trade.I cannot find out anything else about the brother -- as there
were 3 .. Manny Pacheco's in Cambridge during the 1920's.

Can only go back to Laurindo / Lucia da ROSA from Faial who married Clara
Emilia (unknown) from Pico, possibly 1860. So far I know they had 2 sons
during the 1860's, and then daughter, Philomena ~1870. ~1890 Philomena
married Francisco MOURA (da MOURA??) reportedly from Sao Miguel. They
married on Faial and had their 5+ children there, 2 sons and then 3
daughters. Something happened to "Frank" MOURA between 1900 and 1905, as
that is when "Phoebe" began sending her young daughters over to MA/US.
They were Elsita "Elsie," Rosa, and Carolina. They married and became
Mrs. PACHECO, Mrs. PERRY (prob. PEREIRA), and Mrs. MEDEIROS, all initilly
living in Cambridge and Somerville, MA.The 2 MOURA sons married first
and then came over to MA. "Manny" MOURA eventually went to NYC and
remained there. Ernesto Bernardo "Frank" MOURA went to Oakland, CA, and
remained there. (I just found out they both passed ~1980.)

I've posted about these families for several years - but in the past, so
there is information in the archives.

I can add one note. For 5 yrs. I've been trying to help my husband's
father's cousin from the MEDEIROS family find his uncles, aunts, and
cousins from his father's side. His father was one of the youngest of 8
children, but his father died young and so did an older brother, and
connections were lost.Because of the Internet, and my persistence, just
this winter I'm finding information. His 3 MEDEIROS aunts were all
associated with "barber shops" in the Somerville, MA, area, and the
surnames known about were JESSE, SOUSA, and MACHADO. The brother
closest to Frank was Manuel. I'm finding out this month that Manuel
MEDEIROS is a ..very.. popular name. So, I couldn't find out which of the
100 ?? "Manny's" were the brother. But, just this week I got closer to
the mystery. The problem is, he had a marriage in 1913 to a Chareinda
FOSTER (prob. FAUSTINO), she seems to disappear. IF I found the correct
Manuel back in Cambridge, he had 5 children, and most had a different
mother, Emma (SOUSA).So, my imagination tells me that Chareinda died
young and Manuel remarried not long after.

Thank you for your time. I have more information I can share, but
I just wanted to offer an updated summary for today.

Betty Fredericks-Pacheco

(always within 45 min. of Boston; 45 yrs. in Greater Lowell)

(since last summer I've been participating on the Facebook .. Azores
Group, so a lot of my husband's info is there)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Francisco MOURA, Sao Miguel, marr. ~1890 on Faial to Philomena da ROSA

2016-01-21 Thread Cheri Mello
Betty F-P,

Use Tombo.pt to navigate the CCA. You have a name, date, and place. Look
for Antonio born 1885 (give or take a couple of years) born to Joao and
Jacintha Pacheco in Sao Roque. Scroll down to the baptisms that contain
1885 and check out every Antonio. Here's the direct link:
http://tombo.pt/f/pdl18

As for the Faial/Pico connection, you'll have to first straighten out the
Laurindo/Lucia name. Lucia is feminine, meaning Lucy. A Lucy did not marry
a Clara. A man married Clara. If you think they married on Faial around
1860, search CITCEM-GHP (formerly NEPS) for all the freguesias on Faial.
It's only missing 1 freguesia, so you will have use Tombo.pt for that.
Here's the link for NEPS: http://www.ghp.ics.uminho.pt/genealogias.html

Good luck!

[AZORES-Genealogy] naming questions

2016-01-21 Thread themom8682 via Azores Genealogy
This subject line is going to drive Cheri crazy (sorry Cheri) but I have so
many questions about names right now I tried to cover it all in one email.

1. Is the name Accacio familiar? The first time I saw it I transcribed it
just like that because that is what I thought I saw. The next time I saw it I
thought it could be Acevedo so I thought about changing it but then I found
another record where it looked like Accacio.

2. Sometimes on the records I am finding the women's names with a surname,
either the husband or the father. Should I record them that way? It would
make it easier to follow them.

3. On the records I have found so far for my gggrandparents they are listed as
last name Silveira de Souza. EXCEPT, on their marriage record their names are
Joao Silveira de Souza Bettencourt and Marianna Florinda da Silveira
Bettencourt. What is the best way to record them? Should I just make a note
about the Bettencourt name being on this record?

Now that I am writing my number 4 question on this topic, I think that one
deserves it's own email as it is more complicated and I should attach the
records so you wonderful, helpful people can see what I'm seeing.

Thanks,

Lisa

[AZORES-Genealogy] name questions part 2

2016-01-21 Thread themom8682 via Azores Genealogy
Here is my next question and it pertains to these records:

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-VL-VELAS-B-1861-1870/SJR-VL-VELAS-B-1861-1870_item1/P192.html
number 41 Maria on the right

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-VL-VELAS-B-1871-1880/SJR-VL-VELAS-B-1871-1880_item1/P48.html
number 5 Francisca on the right

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-VL-VELAS-B-1871-1880/SJR-VL-VELAS-B-1871-1880_item1/P49.html
number 6 Marianna on the left

4. These are the records that threw me over the edge about this crazy name
problem. I am fairly certain that the father and paternal grandparents on
these records are my ggrandfather's sibling and parents, BUT the father's last
name is de Souza on the earlier record (1867), but it looks like it could be
Lucas or Lemos?? on the later records (1873). The paternal grandfather's name
looks like Manuel Silveira de Souza Salsa (what?) on the 1873 records. The
last name of the maternal grandfather looks like Balaine on the 1873 records;
on the 1867 record it looked like Baliel to me. Oh, and the maternal
grandmother's name was Mariana Luiza on the 1867 record and now it is Marianna
Josefa. Is this totally the wrong family? Did the priest make some mistakes?
(too much vinho as Cheri would say)

And if anyone has any idea what the side note says on the 1867 record, that
would be a bonus.

Thank you again!

2) If you find a woman with a surname, you can either record it that way,
or make a note that it was found that way only on her marriage or
something.

3) I'd list him as Joao Silveira de Souza and make a memo in your marriage
event that he married under the name of Joao Silveira de Souza Bettencourt.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Francisco MOURA, Sao Miguel, marr. ~1890 on Faial to Philomena da ROSA

2016-01-21 Thread Betty Fredericks
Hi Cheri,

Thank you for the suggestions. I only know what other researchers have
told me, so I would go with the Laurindo da ROSA marrying Clara Emilia
(unknown). The son I know about in Cambridge, MA, was Antonio da ROSA
who married and had children. I was reminded of his brother's name last
week.I just checked an old post on the Azores List, and the brother
might have been Manuel da ROSA.The PACHECO and MEDEIROS
grandchildren have no memory of having ROSA / ROSE uncles and aunts.

I'll get back to the searching of records tomorrow.... After all
these years of being curious, I still can't find anything else on that
Francisco MOURA.It's only a family-story that he was from Sao Miguel
and was a whaler. His wife and children all came to MA/US between 1905
and 1915, so we're guessing he had recently passed.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Versinha

2016-01-21 Thread Margaret Vicente
-Shirl,

I don't know if the name on your tree is correct without having first
seeing the original document but there is Versinha as a surname and/or nick
(alcunha). I checked the Porto thesaurus and it says it is the feminine
diminutive of the verb Versa. Versa is the resulting effect of the rain or
other has on the fields where all tall grass or crops get bent over.

Further to that there is a book written in French with the title "Des
marranes a Spinoza" where it lists this name. The book talks about crypto -
Judaism and the title "marranes" clearly indicates the content. Here's the
link.

Linda,

I would love to check... Your grandfather was born in Rabo de Peixe? on Feb 23
1889? Who did he marry in Lagoa? Was that woman your grandmother?

There is talk that my grandfather Manuel d'Andrade Fragoso born feb 23 1989
married a woman in Lagoa. I wonder if this is the same line.

What is your father's name and when did he arrive in Canada?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Versinha

2016-01-21 Thread Shirl Sereque
Versinha
Hi!   I never took French in college but I could understand a little of what
was written.  In fact, I have some of those same names in my tree!
Baltazar João Rodriques Versinha was born in 1531 in Braganca, Portugal and
married Anna João Rodrigues (born in 1535).  Melchor Rodrigues Versinha was
born in 1557,   João Rodrigues Versinha, born in 1531 in Braganca,  Portugal
married Anna João Rodrigues (1535-1611).  I had gotten  the information from
other members in ancestry.com.  If the original Portuguese were there, I wasn't
able to read any of it.  But some of "my" names were in the French information!
I just noticed that I have some info wrong!   Gotta go back and check some
more.
Thank you so much for sending the URL!- Shirl -

 -Shirl,
I don't know if the name on your tree is correct without having first seeing
the original document but there is Versinha as a surname and/or nick (alcunha).
I checked the Porto thesaurus and it says it is the feminine diminutive of the
verb Versa.  Versa is the resulting effect of the rain or other has on the
fields where all tall grass or crops get bent over.
Further to that there is a book written in French with the title "Des marranes
a Spinoza" where it lists this name. The book talks about crypto - Judaism and
the title "marranes" clearly indicates the content. Here's the link.
