 Linda McL,

You need to watch out for "family stories." Sometimes, that is what
they are - just stories. Usually told to amuse the kids (especially before
radio and television). These kids grew up and became our parents or
grandparents and retold the stories that they heard as children. And
childhood memories can be funny things. No one wants to call grandma a
liar, but if she is telling a story that she heard as a child, it may be
just a story that was told to amuse her. Little kids are gullible and
believe most things they are told.

Manuel's baptism had margin notes. Only 1 marriage was noted. I think
it said he married in the 1920s. Those records are not online. I've seen
margin notes where they noted the marriage, noted that the marriage was
dissolved by death of the spouse and they married a 2nd time. Could
 someone
have forgot to note a marriage? Well, they are human and humans make
mistakes. But probably not. The only way to be sure would be to order
Manuel's marriage from the 1920s and see if it says he was the widower of
  and is marrying Maria Cabral.

You need to go back to Manuel's parents' marriage - the marriage of
Jacinto d'Andrade and Escolastica de Jesus. It's in Rabo de Peixe in 1896.
It's going to clarify some of your questions above and raise more.

28 is not too old to get married. Many married when they were older in
 the Azores.

That is really interesting that his son came from Lagoa to Rabo de Peixe.
Do you know when or the name of the woman he married?

Margaret, your note about the father's surname made me go back and check
the other seven baptismo records. Sure enough his surname *is* Tabicos.

Well, there might be something to the story as I descend from the Fragoso

yes, he says first of the name and 4th in the filial order. All records

Manuel's baptism had margin notes. Only 1 marriage was noted. I think
it said he married in the 1920s. Those records are not online. I've seen
margin notes where they noted the marriage, noted that the marriage was
dissolved by death of the spouse and they married a 2nd time. Could someone
have forgot to note a marriage? Well, they are human and humans make
mistakes. But probably not. The only way to be sure would be to order
Manuel's marriage from the 1920s and see if it says he was the widower of

You need to go back to Manuel's parents' marriage - the marriage of
Jacinto d'Andrade and Escolastica de Jesus. It's in Rabo de Peixe in 1896.
It's going to clarify some of your questions above and raise more.

28 is not too old to get married. Many married when they were older in

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: People with Faial ancestry

2016-01-22 Thread jpine1947318
Bella- My name is Joe Pine and I have been researching my family tree
for the past year. I have found that my paternal grandparents were both
born in Salao, Faial. My grandfather was Salvador Silveira Pinheiro, born
on July 15,1884, emigrated in 1912 to Providence,RI. He changed his surname
to Pine at that point. He married my grandmother in Bristol,RI and
eventually moved to Falmouth,MA to raise his family. My grandmother was
Guilhermina Oliveira da Silva, and born on Oct. 24,1883. She emigrated to
Providence,RI in 1914. I grew up in Falmouth and retired to Arizona 10
years ago. I see that you lived in MA and are living in Faial now. My
brother and I would like to visit Faial this year or next year. I would
enjoy hearing from you. You could contact me by email , graf...@yahoo.com.
I have also done the FTDNA test, so we may have some common ancestors. In
addition to my grandparents surnames, I've found Rodrigues, Simas, de
Freitas, Da Rosa, Pereira, Mendonca, Medeiros, and Correia. Most of these
appear to be near Salao. I look forward to hearing from you or any others
that think there is a familial connection.

Jo M H,

You need your freguesia. Not all Mellos are related. Not all Andersons are
related. Not all Martinez' are related or Smiths.

The boats for Hawaii left from Sao Miguel or Madeira. So if your family is
from the Azores, it's more likely Sao Miguel. You can look for him inbound

Hi! My maiden name is Mello - my grandfather's name was Manuel Fregoso Mello.
He was born on one of the Azorean islands in 1866! I believe he emigrated to
Hawaii in 1881 where he married Maria Medeiros abt 1888/9. Records a little
shaky. I understand the name Mello was so common in Hawaii the family was using
Fregoso as their surname while there for a timethat could just be a family
story..Most of the 16 kids were born in Hawaii, as was my father, Ernest
Mello in 1901!

Don't know how common Fragoso/Fregoso was in Azores..

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for any Fragoso descendants from Sao Miguel

2016-01-22 Thread JR
I made a mistake, and quoted the wrong Manuel, who was born March 5, 1898.
He can be found here and those notes are from the margin:

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-RABODEPEIXE-B-1895-1899/SMG-RG-RABODEPEIXE-B-1895-1899_item1/P233.html

So that info you quote is unrelated to Linda. The correct Manuel, was
baptised much later on March 11, and was born on Feb 23, 1898, and he is
the son of Jacinto Andrade and Escolastica de Jesus, and can be found here:

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-RABODEPEIXE-B-1895-1899/SMG-RG-RABODEPEIXE-B-1895-1899_item1/P239.html

[AZORES-Genealogy] Fregoso Mello to Hawaii

2016-01-22 Thread Cheri Mello
Repost for Jo Mello Hartmann , joa1943 at yahoo.com

Hi! My maiden name is Mello - my grandfather's name was Manuel Fregoso
Mello. He was born on one of the Azorean islands in 1866! I believe
he emigrated to Hawaii in 1881 where he married Maria Medeiros abt 1888/9.
Records a little shaky. I understand the name Mello was so common in
Hawaii the family was using Fregoso as their surname while there for a
timethat could just be a family story..Most of the 16 kids were
born in Hawaii, as was my father, Ernest Mello in 1901!

Don't know how common Fragoso/Fregoso was in Azores..

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for any Fragoso descendants from Sao Miguel

2016-01-22 Thread Cheri Mello
Linda McL,

You need to watch out for "family stories." Sometimes, that is what they
are - just stories. Usually told to amuse the kids (especially before radio
and television). These kids grew up and became our parents or grandparents
and retold the stories that they heard as children. And childhood memories
can be funny things. No one wants to call grandma a liar, but if she is
telling a story that she heard as a child, it may be just a story that was
told to amuse her. Little kids are gullible and believe most things they
are told.

Manuel's baptism had margin notes. Only 1 marriage was noted. I think it
said he married in the 1920s.
Manuel's marriage from the 1920s and see if it says he was the widower of
 and is marrying Maria Cabral.

You need to go back to Manuel's parents' marriage - the marriage of Jacinto
d'Andrade and Escolastica de Jesus. It's in Rabo de Peixe in 1896. It's
going to clarify some of your questions above and raise more.

28 is not too old to get married. Many married when they were older in the
Azores.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for any Fragoso descendants from Sao Miguel

2016-01-22 Thread Linda McLellan
My paternal grandfather's name is Manuel d'Andrade Fragoso and he was born
in Rabo de Peixe on Feb 23 1898 and died in Rabo de peixe on Sept 25 1969.
His parent's names are Jacinto d'Andrade and Escolastica de Jesus. It is
said that he married a woman in Lagoa (do not know her name) I am not sure
if she died, or what happened, but he came back to Rabo de Peixe and
married my grandmother. Her name is Maria Jose Cabral. They married when
he was 28 years of age (which is really old to get married at that time).
Now that I know of Fragoso's in Lagoa, this rumor seems like it might be
true.

Could someone
have forgot to note a marriage? Well, they are human and humans make
mistakes. But probably not. The only way to be sure would be to order
Manuel's marriage from the 1920s and see if it says he was the widower of
  and is marrying Maria Cabral.

You need to go back to Manuel's parents' marriage - the marriage of
Jacinto d'Andrade and Escolastica de Jesus. It's in Rabo de Peixe in 1896.
It's going to clarify some of your questions above and raise more.

28 is not too old to get married. Many married when they were older in
 the Azores.
