[AZORES-Genealogy] Sao Jorge (Riviera Seca) Researcher Needed

2016-10-10 Thread 'j Bc' via Azores Genealogy
Hello,

I have broached this subject to both Rosemarie and Cheri, and am hoping that
someone might be able to lead me in the right direction.

I have a set of grandparents that died somewhere between 1911-1930 in Ribeira
Seca on Sao Jorge. (Manuel Machado Cabral and his wife Maria Joaquina)

These records obviously aren't on the CCA, and date range is too large to be
searched via standard request because the archives refuse to perform research.
I need either church records or civil records just to get the dates of death.

I have tried Joao Ventura but he is unable to do research of that nature in Sao
Jorge. Therefore, I would like to know if any of you know of anyone who might
be able to personally do research in the church at Ribeira secs or archives in
the council of calheta for civil records. If anyone is our knows anyone who is
anywhere near the area and night be able to perform the research please let me
know, as I would be happy to reimburse for such work. Further, if anyone knows
of anyone who has a personal database for Ribeira Seca post 1911 deaths please
please please notify me.

Any help at all with this depends would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely

Jeremy

Have you found the birth and or marriage of your grandparents. There is a
chance that there may be a margin note saying when they died.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Old Portuguese Photos

2016-10-10 Thread Judy Thompson
I am going thru some old photos that were from my grandmother's house.
There are several of people I don't recognize. They appear to be either
from Azores or US in early 1900's. Is there a place online that people put
old Portuguese photos for other people to see if they recognize anyone? Or
any suggestions as to what to do with them? All the relatives that might
know who they are have already passed.

Thx.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Priest in Terceira

2016-10-10 Thread Tony
My Great Uncle was a Priest in Terceira. His name was Father Henrique de
Sousa Avila. A native of the parish of Santa Barbara. He died in 1968. His
final resting place was Rua Cinco de Outubro,a parish of Conceicao, Angra.
He had a blind sister named Amelia. The cemetery that he was buried is
Livramento of Angra. I was wondering if there is anyone who may remember
them or if it is possible to get a picture of their graves?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Priest in Terceira

2016-10-10 Thread linda

Hi Tony,

My family was from Santa Barbara. I can ask an octagenarian I know from
the village (now living in California) if he recalls your great uncle and
aunt. What sort of info are you interested in?

Graves in the cemeteries of the islands are reused periodically, so your
relative's remains are likely to have been moved. My grandmother, a native
of Santa Barbara, died there in 1968/9. By the time I visited in about
1986, she had already given up her place for someone more recently
deceased. But, it's possible the graves are still marked.

let me know if I can help,

Linda

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with translation

2016-10-10 Thread linda

I'm glad to have helped :D The vocabulary used in the records is limited,
and with very little practice, you can be reading them in no time.
FamilySearch.org has a list of words used in the records on their site, and
that's really all you need to get started.

Here's a transcription:

Elvira Augusa de 30 anos,
casada com Antonio Augus-
to da Cunha, proprieta-
ria, natural da freguesia
de Santa Cruz ilha Gracio-
sa deste districto; levando seu
filho, Joao Augusto da Cu-
nha de 15 anos solteiro, traba-
lhador, Alfredo Augusto da
Cunha de 11, e Rosalia de 6 anos,
todos da dita freguesia.

Good luck!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with translation

2016-10-10 Thread Steve Wright
Linda,
Interesting! She did go back to Graciosa, where she died. I was told she missed
Graciosa.

I will look up the list on Family Search. You have been a big help.

Now to find my grandmother's passport. She came at a later date.

It's there, just type in Ancestor Roundup in the 'search' box on Facebook
and the class schedule, teachers bios and the flyer with the cost etc. is
all there.

The flyer with class info and registration info is now on Facebook
under 36th Annual DAR Ancestor Round-up. There are many, many great classes
available. I will be presenting a two hour class on reading the Portuguese
Church Records (this includes the Azores, Madeira, Portugal and Cape Verde
records) This is a fun day for all and your registration can include lunch
or you can bring a bag lunch and still eat with everyone! There is a flyer
showing the classes available and a separate flyer for registration. You
will have a good time and learn a lot about researching genealogy.
