The church secretary just told me to me to put the request in an email and
she would get back to me. I sent the email on Monday. I'll wait and see
what I get back. Cheri

I believe it's most likely to mean a schoolmaster, but a native speaker
would know best.

I’m sorry you
had that experience, Celeste. My sources tell me that
particular rectory is a bit of a mess personnel-wise so
I’m not sure they’d go the extra mile to look in the
files. Parishes need more encouragement like what we’re
doing in the Archdiocese of Boston to get them to give us
genealogists a good helping hand.

I called this

morning, and the church secretary, Tammy,
said the St. John

books are there. She won't photocopy
or take a picture

of the book but will issue a paper
certificate. I told her

the certificate doesn't have a blank
for the

freguesia/village that the bride and groom
are from. She

said to state that in an email to her and
she'll add it

in. So now I play "wait and
see."

At least we have confirmation that the
books are there

as of January 2017.

Looking for help with what is written in the margin - it looks like it
could be her wedding to Simão de Souza but I’ve found that register entry
and the date doesn’t look like it would match. Also, these entries don’t
seem to contain the grandparents’ info - is that correct? Finally, is that
a title before the father’s first name or another name I’ve never seen
before?

Thanks in advance for the help! (as usual)

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation Help: Maria de Lima Baptism 1789 Capelas

2017-01-24 Thread Diane George
The word in front of the father’s name looks “Mestre” or Master.

Looking for help with what is written in the margin - it looks like it could be
her wedding to Simão de Souza but I’ve found that register entry and the date
doesn’t look like it would match. Also, these entries don’t seem to contain the
grandparents’ info - is that correct? Finally, is that a title before the
father’s first name or another name I’ve never seen before?

Thanks in advance for the help! (as usual)

2017-01-24 Thread linda
I see the father's title as being "Mestre" , which might be "master" or
teacher. I'm away from home, so can't double check now but will try to confirm
when I get back.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation Help: Maria de Lima Baptism 1789 Capelas

2017-01-24 Thread Joanne Mercier
We’re trying to decipher if the margin notes in the original image post are
regarding her marriage to Simão de Souza. The margin date is 1809 but the
marriage entry is 1811, unless I didn’t get that date correct. That’s why I
included it in the thread to get a second opinion.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] St. John the Baptist & Mount Carmel churches in New Bedford, Massachusetts

2017-01-24 Thread Joanne Mercier
I’m sorry you had that experience, Celeste. My sources tell me that
particular rectory is a bit of a mess personnel-wise so I’m not sure they’d
go the extra mile to look in the files. Parishes need more encouragement
like what we’re doing in the Archdiocese of Boston to get them to give us
genealogists a good helping hand.

Any suggestions that can give me a more accurate location of birth is

I called this
morning, and the church secretary, Tammy, said the St. John
books are there. She won't photocopy or take a picture
of the book but will issue a paper certificate. I told her
the certificate doesn't have a blank for the
freguesia/village that the bride and groom are from. She
said to state that in an email to her and she'll add it
in. So now I play "wait and see."
At least we have confirmation that the books are there
as of January 2017.
