How does one go about ordering records from the Portuguese Civil Registry?
Online or snail mail?

I *think* this is it:

Not sure of the years it covers. Also, I seem to remember that you need to
be a Portuguese citizen to obtain a record.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Portuguese Civil Registry- Ordering

2017-03-10 Thread Joseph Mendonca
Yes, I have dual citizenship and have my Portuguese ID card. I wasn't sure
if you could order documents which are not your immediate family. I'll
give it try. Just have to figure out how to navigate that site. I ordered
my son's birth certificate via the internet in the early 2000's with the
help of the Portuguese Consulate in New Bedford.

Thanks Cheri, see you in Salt Lake!

My attempt ran into a couple of issues:
Required fields
1. Individuals date of birth must be 1917 or greater, I needed 1908
2. Must know parents names, which is one thing I'm trying to obtain.

Oh well.

Doesn't Civil Registration start with the year 1911? I know when we were on

Parish records in Furnas end at 1905. When I entered the year in the field
on the ordering page on Portal do Cidadão it gave me a pop up error message
saying that the year entered had to be 1917 or greater.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Portuguese Civil Registry- Ordering

2017-03-10 Thread Margaret Vicente
That's because the years 1909 to 1916 have been transferred to the Public
Library. You will need to order in writing and include the cost. It's
only a few cents for a copy but if you want it stamped/certified it will
cost around E$20

You can also call them to find out more. Here's the link for "Biblioteca
Publica e Arquivo Digital"

Not sure of the years it covers. Also, I seem to remember that you need
to be a Portuguese citizen to obtain a record.

The Ponta Delgada archive is a pain. Many of the freguesias online end
around 1905 or so. They should now have the books up to 1910. Maybe 1915.
You should contact the archive for a 1908 record. See if their email
address is on their web site. I'll look for it when I get home, unless
someone else finds it first. Cheri

All years up to 1917 will be at the Public Library.

We should be contacting CCA to inquire when will they be bringing the parishes
up to date in conformance with the 100 year rule? If enough of us do this they
may give it consideration.

Maria Rosa, daughter of what looks like Manuel Silveira "abbreviated name

Interesting. They used to transfer books over to the archive in years
divisible by 5: 2005, 2010, 2015. So they'd get 5 years worth of books. Now
it's yearly? I haven't been over there in many years to find out.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Rose E. Silvia born St. Mathews, Island of Pico born approx 1863

2017-03-10 Thread Mary Jane Goss
Information from a death certificate in Falmouth Mass shows Rose E. Silvia died
June 6, 1933 age 68 years 7 months 18 days. It also says her parents names
were Manuel Silvia, from St. Mathews, Pico, and mother Anna Marcia from St.
Mathews, Pico. She was the wife of Joseph Silvia who predeceased her in 1926.

Where might St. Mathews be? Is there a city on the island of Pico named St.
Mathews? Also I am confused by the information because Silvia was her
husband's name. Family lore says her maiden name was Bettencourt or some
variation there of. The census information we have says Jan 1863 was the
Month and Date of her birth but it doesn't seem to be working with the info on
the death certificate.

We know this is the right woman because the informant was her daughter. Her
husband's name was reported as Joseph, but it appears it may have been John
Joseph Sylia. The tombstones say Sylva.

Joseph Sylvia died May 28, 1926 at age 55. The parents names say "Cannot be
learned" but do say he was born in Portugal.

I do not know if I have enough information yet to start looking at records on
Pico. Any insight is appreciated.

Mary Jane

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Rose E. Silvia born St. Mathews, Island of Pico born approx 1863

2017-03-10 Thread Cheri Mello
Mary Jane,

The map of Pico is here. St. Mathew's is an English translation. I'm going
to let you look at the map and see if you can figure it out:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/maps-churches-and-villages/pico.html

Assuming "Rose" was born on Pico, look for a Rosa (or maybe Maria) born
around her birthdate to parents named Manoel Silva (or Sylva) and Anna
Maria (I'm guessing that's a typo you made). Only then will you be able to
confirm or deny the family lore of Bettencourt.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help with Baptismos - Graciosa

2017-03-10 Thread Lee
Can some please help with the record of Maria (left side, middle - 1737
written above her name)?

She is the daughter of Manoel de Conde Sodre of the Parish of Luz and of
Maria de Bettencourt of the Ilha da Suppne??? (Wrong, I know) and fregusia
da Guill?? (Guadalupe?)

I cannot make this out.

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/GRA-SC-LUZ-B-1728-1742/GRA-SC-LUZ-B-1728-1742_item1/P61.html

Or; do I have it totally wrong and they are both from Luz?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Yes, Sao Mateus would translate to St. Matthew in English, so you got it!

Now to start wading through the time period looking for babies born to your

Mary Jane,

It's highly doubtful that you'd find Silvia as a surname. More likely it would
be Silva or Silveira. Both appear in the Sao Mateus records.

Gayle
