Hi Donald,

I've run into something similar. I'm convinced something went awry with the
new system FTDNA used. I hope they correct it.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Lucinda Pacheco (1884-1955)

2017-04-05 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Congratulations. That is the link you needed. There are still questions that
need to be figured out. This passport record states she is married so her
marriage must have been in Ribeirinha Unfortunately the records after 1905 are
not posted on the CCA. The passport record is very hard to read Margaret is a
wizard a reading the hardest of records. I was wondering who the person is
above her is? He/She is also from Ribeirinha? This writing is hard to read I
can only make the person’s fathers name Jose Pacheco.

Here is the marriage of Lucinda’s parents Miguel de Arruda and Maria Julia
Ferreira:

You have a dead end with Miguel de Arruda as he is an exposto.

It looks like you found your Lucinda. The birth record for 1881 is the correct
person the father is Miguel de Arruda and the mother is Maria Julia Ferreira.

Going to America in 1911. Her age at the time was 29 and she was Married. The
writing is very tiny but readable. Please see # 484

necessarily a deal breaker but enough to try and find more evidence. What is
the complete snippit with the three names? Can you link the whole thing? The

To add to all this confusion here is another Lucinda born 21 May 1883:

This record was just a page before the record of Honero. I will note in all
three of the Lucinca’s there are no margin notes on the records. The next step
is to check Obitos. And see if I can find any deaths to try and eliminate any
of them. Of all three I like this one born in 1883 the best. Somehow I feel
uncomfortable about this Manuel Arruda being the father.

I have a very large data base coming from Ribeirinha and there is only one
Manuel Arruda that married and is about the right age but looking at all the
births in 1883 and 1884 they did not have any girls born to this couple.

2017-04-05 Thread Herb
Cheri I checked mine. I am now 51% Iberian and 12% British Isles and 8% Western
and Central Europe. Also looks like I picked up some Jewish DNA with these new
estimates, 4% Sephardic Jew. It will be interesting to see the estimates in 20
years. By then I think we will really know with a high degree of certainty.
Like Mary Ann my family lived in Sao Miguel for 500 plus years. I was born
there. Not sure these or the previous results are clear and precise but it is
all very interesting isn't it? And like you said a lot depends on the control
groups. I doubt actual Azoreans were part of the control group. Herb

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] New Ethnicity Estimates for Family Tree DNA

2017-04-05 Thread Cheri Mello
Julie M,

The 3 major DNA testing companies are AncestryDNA, 23andMe, and Family Tree
DNA. My Heritage is a newcomer to the DNA scene.

23andMe was founded more for medical. Most people there don't bother with
us genealogists.

AncestryDNA has removed about 48% of the family markers and replaced them
with health. They strip your name and then sell your DNA to big
pharmaceutical for a reported $750. So read their Terms & Conditions
carefully (Big Pharma can pay ME $750, thank you).

The chip that FTDNA uses does have the health on it, but FTDNA does nothing
with it. But it's in your raw data file.

If you are searching for your paternal side, you may need to test with more
than one company. I would suggest a company that deals with genealogy
(Family Tree DNA and probably AncestryDNA if you want to agree to their
terms).

If you want the health stuff, you can just download your raw file from
either company and upload it to Promethease.com and get your report for $5.
You can pay for interpretation - $50 on up. I think Ann Turner may do this
(she's a retired M.D. and one of the authors of "Trace Your Roots with
DNA.")

If you want ethnicity estimates only (and yes, they are estimates) it's
looks like FTDNA's is ka-phooey and you'd need to look at 23andMe and
AncestryDNA or both. They each have their own population samples that they
will compare you against so you will get different percentages at each
company.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: New Ethnicity Estimates for Family Tree DNA

2017-04-05 Thread Elaine Mello
Looking at this, it actually makes sense for me - to be honest, I don't
remember what it used to look like, but I am 50/50 Portuguese/Irish, and
the mapping comes pretty darn close to that:

The Middle Eastern traces are Turkey with Tunisia for North Africa and
Tanzania for East Central - all port areas, which makes sense for roving
fishermen to sow their wild oats. British Isles is all pure Co. Cork Irish
from that side of the family with the Iberian coming all from the Azores.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Passport Translation Please

2017-04-05 Thread Sami
Could someone please translate what information is given for the first
passenger on the page, Jose De Vargas Dias? I am particularly interested in
the section where it lists who he is traveling with. It may be his children
and if I can get their names it will greatly help me determine if I have
the right person. His marital status is widowed, yes? Does the entry say
when they left or what ship they went on? If not, is there a way to find
out? Also, what is said at the very end of the entry? Thanks in advance for
any help!

Unless you are talking about the island of Sao Nicolau. That's not one of
the Azores, that's one of the Cape Verde islands. Some of their records are
online at Family Search.org. If not, you will have to go to your local FHC
and order the film.

My guess is Bettencourt also. Look at his father's name on the line below.

Jose de Bettencourt de Azevedo, legitimate son of Jose de Azevedo de
Bettencourt.

I see the father and mother in my database since they are from Norte
