Each council (county) has one Matriz or Mother Church. Some large concelhos
(councils) have 2 (that's only on Sao Miguel island though).

Santa Maria = 1
Sao Miguel = 8
Terceira = 2 (sorta - one is really the Cathedral or the Diocese seat)
Graciosa = 1
Sao Jorge = 2
Pico = 3
Faial = 1
Flores = 2
Corvo = 0

2017-05-17 Thread JR
Perhaps you are right. But it is strange that in Emilia's baptism of 1873
the priest says Antonio da Silva parents are also Incognitos and that
Helena Rosa is viuva. But if she was married to Antonio Silva who died in
1874 after Emilia was born, why would priest say she is viuva in the 1873
baptism? It may just be a mix up.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Wording in baptism Ribeirinha, SM 1873

2017-05-17 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
JR,

I am treading lightly on this one. I have Antonio da Silva Canario born
sometime before 1809 marring Francisca de Jesus. I have found five children
born between 1837 and 1849 Francisca died before 18 Oct 1854 when he married
Helena de Jesus (Helena Rosa). They have three children born between 1859 and
1867, Maria, Maria, and Jose. Then in 1873 this Emilia is born We know this is
the same couple because the priest started to write filha legitima digo filha
natural Antonio da Silva and Helena Rosa. So the question is how can Emilia be
filha natural when the two people he named are married? I suspect that Antonio
da Silva figured out that he was too old or could not have fathered another
child and told the priest. He died in 1874 at age 70 more or less in the
hospital in Ribeira Grande. Helena Rosa/Helena de Jesus remarried in 1876 to
Jose da Costa Pragana.

I there was not another Antonio da Silva Canario in Ribeirinha during this
time period especially one married to a Helena de Jesus/Helena Rosa

If you need what I have I can provide it along with the sources

I have this person in my database from when I helped someone in Brazil dig up
their Canario ancestors. Note the spelling is Canario with two a's and the
bird canary. This Antonio Silva possibly married three times. And there is
likely two or three such individuals with the same name about the same time. So
this may cause confusion.

Emilia da Paixao is 22 years old, single natural desta freguesia and is filha
natural de Helena Rosa, who is also natural of Ribeirinha. So Helena Rosa had
Maria out of wedlock and the father is presumably unknown, though he may have
come forward at a later time.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Wording in baptism Ribeirinha, SM 1873

2017-05-17 Thread JR
Not sure about anything. There may be two women named Helena, [Helena Rosa
and Helena Candida de Jesus] married to two Antonio da Silva Canario's. Or
they are the same people. I am sure Richard has more information he can
glean from the baptisms to connect all these people. Baptism of Emilia
clearly states her parents were from Avos Incognitos, meaning that neither
Antonio or Helena knew their parents. So this may be a totally unrelated
Antonia da Silva Canario. The priest simply elected not to name the father
when Emilia married.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Wording in baptism Ribeirinha, SM 1873

2017-05-17 Thread JR
I have this person in my database from when I helped someone in Brazil dig
up their Canario ancestors. Note the spelling is Canario with two a's and
the bird canary. This Antonio Silva possibly married three times. And there
is likely two or three such individuals with the same name about the same
time. So this may cause confusion.

Emilia da Paixao is 22 years old, single natural desta freguesia and is
filha natural de Helena Rosa, who is also natural of Ribeirinha. So Helena
Rosa had Maria out of wedlock and the father is presumably unknown, though
he may have come forward at a later time.

Kathy Cardoza, web master of the Azores GenWeb noted which churches are
Matriz'.

You can go to the Azores GenWeb, Maps, Churches, and Villages section here:
https://goo.gl/EvsfkI

You can pick your island by pointing at "Maps, Churches, and Villages" or
by selecting from the list she provided below the map on that page.

You can do a Ctrl+F (or Command+F for Macs) and type: Matriz
to find the Matriz that are listed (F means Find. It's a useful keyboard
shortcut to find something on a page. You may also locate the Find command
under "Edit" if you have your Menu bar displayed in your browser or by
clicking the Menu button in your browser).

A big thank you to Kathy for finding the time to do this for us! Obrigada

You've sent the same link twice.

In the baptism, the priest does not write his "d" with the stick up. He writes
it like the "d" has had too much vinho and it's falling down. It looks like a
"p."

At the end of line 9 he says: filha legitima pigo (digo)

10) filha natural de Antonio da Silva Carneiro, work-

Joanne, Looks like Nossa Senhora da Apresentação in Capelas (on the north
side of the island) also in Ponta Delgada is considered a Matriz too.
>From Wikipedia:
A Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Apresentação

foi instituída como paróquia
em 12 de Fevereiro de 1592
, por carta régia de Filipe
 II (I de Portugal), a
pedido do então bispo de Angra
, D. Manuel de Gouveia
. A igreja matriz (século
XVI ) ostentava o título de
'Matriz-Prioral'.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Wording in baptism Ribeirinha, SM 1873

2017-05-17 Thread Cheri Mello
You've sent the same link twice.

In the baptism, the priest does not write his "d" with the stick up. He
writes it like the "d" has had too much vinho and it's falling down. It
looks like a "p."

At the end of line 9 he says: filha legitima pigo (digo)
10) filha natural de Antonio da Silva Carneiro, work-
11) er, and of Helena Roza

João Ventura, archivist, told us that many of the expostos were baptized at
the various Matriz'. Bretanha belongs to Ponta Delgada and the Matriz in
Ponta Delgada is São Sebastião. That's on the other side of the island. I
do see Ribeira Grande mentioned in your document. That's on the north coast
of São Miguel island. I'd check the Matriz of R.Grande. The name of that
church is Nossa Senhora da Estrela.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Wording in baptism Ribeirinha, SM 1873

This baptism is a little unusual and I am not sure of it the wording on the
parentage is confusing I think it reads "legitimate daughter of unknown
natural daughter of Antonio da Silva Canerio and Helena Rosa"

is Helena Rosa and as Filha natural. I think there was some confusion as to
just who the father was. To add to the confusion I have a Antonio da Silva
Canerio married to Helena 1854 and a half a dozen kids before this one
Antonio died before 1876 when Helena remarried.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with Bretanha Óbitos - 1862

2017-05-17 Thread JR
I see. If you have gone through the records, she may have been born in
another village. However, be on guard for any child given to the said
parents in the specified 2 year period, in case there was a name change.
After that I would look in Ponta Delgada. But you may be disappointed.
There may be more than one Claudina given to parents from Bretanha in the
same time period. Parents are not always specified. If they specify the
correct parents, you are lucky.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with Bretanha Óbitos - 1862

2017-05-17 Thread Joanne Mercier
Ok, then I should be looking for her birth among the expostos, right? I've
gone back as far as 1859 in Bretanha and haven't seen her. Could she have
been born nearby and given to Antonia Augusta in Bretanha?

Thanks for your help, JR!

Claudina died a t two years old and was raised by Antonia Augusta spouse of
Francisco da Camara. Something like, "...In proof hereof I wrote this
