MEDEIROS--- a name most probably derived from a place name or of
geographical
origin. Rui Goncalves de Medeiros was a peer and a supporter of the Master
of
Avis. He was made the chief governing officer of the city of Evora after the
uprisings that enveloped the city during the beginnings of the Crisis of
1383-85. From Rui are descended many with that name, including a branch that
settled on the island of Madeira when it was first colonized. The coat-of-
arms: in the shield, there is a red background with five eagles' heads of
gold. The crest is a red eagle which extends itself and is rimmed in gold.

Not sure if you're all aware but I just found out that Al Gore is of

For such a small group of islands Azorean descendants most certainly have

[AZORES-Genealogy] Shared CenitMorgan Project (for those who have DNA tested)

2017-06-05 Thread Cheri Mello
(Cross posted to Azores, Madeira, and IslandRoutes)

Blaine Bettinger, author and DNA blogger, is asking for submissions for the
Shared CentiMorgan Project.

It works like this: For the DNA matches you have identified as your cousins
(or the cousins you have recruited), you go to the link below and answer
the 8 questions.

It would be great if we could get as many people to contribute live data
for Blaine to work with for endogamous populations.

If I were filling it out and using my cousin, Altino Demelo, I'd answer the
questions, mark the relationship as endogamous, in the notes section state
that the relationship is 2C twice and 3C twice. Then I'd tell Altino NOT to
report it to Blaine (duplicate data).

Then I'd move on to my next match.

This is an ongoing thing, however Blaine is going to republish his findings
after June 30th. So submit your info before then to be included in this
round. And be sure to let your cousin know you submitted them.

The link is here to submit your info: https://goo.gl/oOpv3L

The Azores islands are 9 islands west of Portugal. They are an autonomous
region of Portugal. The Madeira islands is another archipelago of only 2
inhabited islands, more southwest of Portugal. They too are an autonomous
region of Portugal. Madeiran wine does indeed come from Madeira. There's a
region on Terceira in the Azores that makes wine too (possibly Biscoitos -
somewhere around there).

Isn't THAT The truth!

Medeiros comes from the terms Medeiro or Madeira I know one has to do with
picking/husking (maize) corn or the area of picking maize, which would
typically suggest they were maize/corn farmers. However, Madeira is a
region and a form of wine, isn't it?

municipality of Montalegre, in the Vila Real District in the Province of
Tras-os-Montes.The crater is 5km from the county seat and is 16 km from the
border with Spain on the edge of the Barroso Mountains.
These places are included in the Parish of Vila Cha :
1. Castanheira
2. Firvidas
3. Gralhos
4. Medeiros
5. Peirezes
6. Penedones
7. Sao Vicente
8. Travarsos Tea
9. Trogueda

In the 15th century one branch of the Medeiros family leaving Ponte de Lima set
up
in the Algarve and another branch went to the island of Sao Miguel in the
Azores. In 1420-1450 James Guill list several family heads in the Madeira
archipelago. One person mentioned is Rui Vaz de Medeiros a native of Ponte de
Lima in the Guimarae's region who was a contemporary of Goncalves de Medeiros.
In 1474 Rui Vaz went to Madeira during the first colonization of the island. He
married D. Ana ( or Mecia) Mendonca Goncalves who was the daughter of Jorge de
Mendonca .This couple moved with their family to Sao Miguel,Azores and had a
lot land at the end of Lagoa. They arrived in Sao Miguel with 3rd Captain Don
Rui Goncalves of Camara.
Rui Vaz de Medeiros and D. Ana Goncalves children were:
1. Vasco de Medeiros ( Rui Vaz)
2.Rafael de Medeiros
3. Joao Vaz de Medeiros
4. Jordan Vaz de Medeiros
5. White Days Medeiros
6. Guiomar Ruiz de Medeiros
7. Maria de Medeiros

Rui Vaz de Medeiros known as Vasco de Medeiros settled in the town of Lagoa or
in Alagoa Village on Sao Miguel ,Azores. He was married to Catherine Bridge the
daughter of Fernando Rodrigues a noble of Lagoa. Many Azoreans with the
Medeiros surname are descendents of this Vasco de Medeiros.

Vasco's siblings :
1. Rafael married the daughter of Antonio Roiz Carneiro the Governor
of Santa Maria Island.
2. Joao married Isabel Frias
3. Jordan married Vila Franca the daughter of Francisco Afonso de Paiva
4. White married Diogo Afonso da Costa Cogombreiro
5. Guiomar married Anes Lope de Araujo
6. Maria de Medeiros ( was married 3 times )

Doing some research I found this information in Portuguese. I tried to write it
more clearly for myself. Does anyone in the group have more accurate
information on this history of the Medeiros surname or any corrections for me
on what I have written here as to accuracy ?

I highly recommend Melo Bento, Carlos Eduardo. Origens Geográficas dos Açores,
Criativaçores, Ponta Delgada: 2015. It gives you not only places of origin but
also the first person of the particular family name to come to the Azores.

2017-06-05 Thread bsei2816
Thanks JR and Cheri. Now it obviously looks like Lobam even so heavily
sneezed upon. Hindsight after someone reads it for you is wonderful. I
think Cheri is right that I will have to find another record to get the
name under the watermark, but both of JR's suggestions look possible. The
name de Eiro I was able to get by looking around Graciosa records which I
found several instances (sometimes spelled as "Deiro or d' Eiro). Is this
name specificly associated with Graciosa? I am fairly new to Graciosa
research where my wife's paternal line has taken me.

Another name I have seen a lot that I don't remember seeing on other
islands I have researched is Picanço. I was already familiar with this
name because it was my landlord's name when I rented a house on Terceira
when I was stationed there in the '80s. My landlord's family had come to
Terceira from Graciosa. Is this another name specific (or at least most
commonly associated with) Graciosa?

2017-06-05 Thread Cheri Mello
Andrew M,

However, most families really don't have a coat of arms or armorial. We
were just a bunch of hard working peasants back then!

Also, you are used to the American tradition of naming patterns and you
only *think* your surname is Medeiros. It's not. My surname should have
been Jacome when you go back far enough (where I ran out of records).

Cheri Mello (could have been Cheri de Mello or Cheri Jacome)

I've never seen Terceira abbreviated before. That was funny.

Gods: Andre Coelho Machado and his sister Maria Rosa, uncle/aunt paternal
of Jose Coelho Machado Cotta

Groom's dad: Looks like it says "de ciro" which might be "deciro." Decir is
"to say." It doesn't make sense there.

Bride's parents: Umm, he sneezed on the dad's name and you can curse the
CCA for the watermark? That one you will have to pull her baptism to get it
I think.
