[AZORES-Genealogy] Portuguese Nomenclature

2017-08-08 Thread Azores Genealogy group
G'day folks,

Recently there has been discussion on using modern Portuguese whenever
using family tree databases. I fully support such a standardisation but
what is the definitive reference source document? As a non speaking Aorean
descendant how do I determine what's modern?

Examples to You use de Sousa or de Souza, Anna or Ana, I have multiple
official documents where even in same document names have been spelt
differently.

Suggestions?.

Tony

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Portuguese Nomenclature

2017-08-08 Thread Cheri Mello
Tony A,

You'll learn as you go along.
Manoel de Souza is...
Given name(s): Manuel de
Last name: Sousa

Da, de, do, d' are surname prefixes. They aren't part of the last name
unless that person uses it today as their legal name (my cousin, Altino
Demelo's last legal name is Demelo, so I have that way, but I tell my
program to file him under the Ms).

Anna is Ana.

Many double consonants that were considered to be repetitive were dropped.
So it's Ana now.

I think there may be a small name list on the Azores Gen Web. Cheri

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Portuguese Nomenclature

2017-08-08 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Tony you need to go to the AzoresGenWeb site and download the Basic
Portuguese Paleography. In the center of the booklet it lists given names
and surnames in the modern spellings. Also, James Guill's book *The History
of the Azores , *if you could find a copy, has a section with surnames in
the modern spellings. Check out the Terceira Marriage Index on the CCA
site, they use the modern spellings.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Portuguese Nomenclature

2017-08-08 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
I standardize last name spellings using James Guill’s list from Vol 5, Azores
Islands a History. In this book he has listed SOUSA not Souza. My Genealogy
program allows flexibility on names. My grandfather spelled his name Pimental,
according to his Baptismal record the correct spelling is Pimentel. In my
Genealogy program I entered his name as Pimental, As a Tag (name variation) I
entered his name as Pimentel. I also entered his sort name as Pimental. This
way when I search, his name will be listed both ways and he can be found.

There is a list of first names that are the approved names and modern spellings
in Portugal. I use the modern spellings for example Joao rather than Joam, Anna
rather than Ana. I also make a note on how the name was spelled in the record.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Can't be sure of Name of child and father

2017-08-08 Thread Maria Lima
Right page, second one down.

Is the father Manoel de MONTE? Or could it be da Costa? I want it to be da
Costa. The padrinho is a Da Costa and it is clear. The mother's name is
also clear and it's the name I'm looking for, Izabel Martins.

Is the child named Pedro?

If it doesn't say Manoel da " Costa", then sadly, it's not my record. :(

Thanks for looking.

[AZORES-Genealogy] A child "presented" to Izabel Martins

2017-08-08 Thread Maria Lima
Wow! Izabel had a daughter which they named Maria and was baptized April
1-then a few pages later I find ANOTHER child baptized 1 June (also named
Maria) but her parents are Unknown. It says she was "presented" to Izabel
Martins, wife of Manoel da Costa.

How do I record this second Maria who is not biological child of the couple?
(Well, we don't know if she's the child of the father or some relative) when
this child was given to her to raise, she already had 5 of her own and the
youngest was two months old. Weird situation but maybe someone has more
insight.

As a matter of interest I would look at the Obitos for this period between the
two Marias to see if the first one died. Remember this is the time before
bottles and formulas and many foundlings were given to woman who were
lactating. As far as the second Maria you might say she was in foster care. I
certainly would make note of it as this is the family history.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Can't be sure of Name of child and father

2017-08-08 Thread Maria Lima
Thank. You Margaret. I'm looking for Antonia Martins daughter of Manoel da
Costa x Izabel Martins. Most of the children of this couple were baptized in
Relva but I've discovered some were baptized in São José.

I thought I had the whole family and then the computer pointed out there were
Missing children- a nine year gap between kids. Then I realized they were
being baptized in different parishes between São José and Relva in Ponta
Delgada.

In the last few minutes I found a child given to the Izabel Martins when she
had just given birth to Maria at the end of March and then she was given
another child named Maria of unknown parents at the beginning of June! Maybe
it was because she could nurse her?

Not sure if this is an adopted child or how to enter in familysearch.

I think I will find Antonia Martins birth record in São José as I keep looking
between 1683 and 1689 when the next child was born. Izabel had child bearing
pattern of almost every 2 years.

As always, Margaret, you are so kind and helpful. Thank you

The child Maria of incognito parents you speak of "was presented" for
baptism by Isabel Martins wife of Manuel da Costa. Baptism required some
one to present the child. It is an ancient ritual.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Pai Incognito

2017-08-08 Thread Judy Thompson
I'm wondering what people are using in their family trees when the
father is pai incognito? Are you using just that? What if you have
more than one person with a pai incognito, do you use the same or code
them as 1, 2, etc., or ?

It depends on what type of computer you have.
On my Windows 10 based one, I use screenshot to save them, the Photo
Manager to crop. I add them to documents as an image.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Pai Incognito

2017-08-08 Thread Cheri Mello
Pai incognito. Mãe incognito. I don't number them. Each one is unique with
its own identification from the program. Otherwise, they would all show up
as siblings and that is not true.

Most people do this method. I see it in their trees when they upload it to
FTDNA. Cheri

I do not put any name if they are incognito. If you want you can add a note
that parents were unknown.

You should be able to right-click on the file you want to save, and pick the
appropriate thing from the menu. I'm not a Windows person so I can't help you
with software suggestions. But at least this will get the image saved to your
computer. Be sure to note where it goes. :)
