RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Gaspar Gonçalves de Quadros married to Maria da Cunha - S. Jorge Island

2017-11-17 Thread 'Sam (Camas, WA)' via Azores Genealogy
Eliseu; Apologies for taking so long to get back to you. We arrived on our
annual migration to Mazatlan last Saturday and it has taken us a while to get
settled, internet up, etc. Looking at the line you mentioned, I have no proof
of it as yet. I input information to my tree from other people’s trees and use
it as a clue that I then try to prove. Plus, I think when I switched over to
the new Family Treemaker, it might have messed something up on some of the
lines. I will try to keep you in mind once I straighten it all out and get
back to you then.

Sam

Upon reading your attachment I'm interested in your Vitória da CUNHA. You list
her as having two sets of children however one list does not nominate a father.
Do you know who the father was? I'm wondering whether it might be Francisco de
OLIVEIRA

Does anyone have anything on Gaspar Gonçalves de Quadros married to Maria da

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Bettencourt

2017-11-17 Thread Mary Bordi
I wouldn't rely on the census for correct spelling. If the person being
interviewed was illiterate they may not have known how to spell their name.
Then it was up to the census taker to sound it out, sometimes from a heavy
accent! Even the records in the Azores have different spellings for some
names in different eras. I have most often seen it spelled Bettencourt here
in California. (My ancestors are from Sao Jorge and there is Bettencourt in
the family.)

Where did the Bettencourt you are looking for settle in the US? East or
West coast or somewhere in between? I would pretty much bet they were from
the Azores.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Bettencourt

2017-11-17 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Pat, that's great but verify all! Bettencourt is spelled this way. Just
remember that most of our people were illiterate and didn't know how to
spell, the Census taker didn't have a clue how to spell the name and the
priests of the Azores spelled and abbreviated at will! I have tons of
Bettencourts and probably have *at least* 8 or 9 different spellings and
abbreviations!

Pat, wait for a native speaker to answer you. Double consonants were
dropped in many names and Bettencourt may be Betencourt today.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA Sale with the Big Y

2017-11-17 Thread Cheri Mello
(Cross Posted to Azores, Madeira, and Island Routes lists)

I've had a couple questions about the Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) sale and the
Big Y. With the purchase of the Big Y (on sale for $475 instead of $575),
you can get upgrade to Y-111 markers (you must have at least a Y-DNA 12
marker kit).

The Big Y is NOT the same as Y-111. Big Y is a SNP type test, used more for
anthropology, and Y-111 (or 37, or 67) is a STR test, used for genealogy.

Roberta Estes does a really good job explaining the difference (Big Y is
like what "clan" of mankind we belong to whereas Y37, 67, or 111 is the
family we belong to).

You can read more about it here: https://goo.gl/nVgGBk
