Hi  Everyone

I have added a database of U.P.P.E.C. Death Records to the Azores GenWeb.
This information was contributed by a person wishing to remain anonymous,
but is being shared to anyone who is interested in it. The U.P.P.E.C. is
another fraternal society that operated in California, beginning in the late
1800s. These records are a gold mine of information.

They contain a lot of information! So much, in fact, that each record
stretches over four images/screens. So, be aware that, for each record you
are
looking at, you should take note of its ID Number to follow it into the
other pages that contain additional info on it. This is what you will find in
these  records:

Page  1 for each record:
*   ID  number
*   Claim  Number
*   Policy  Number
* Last Name, First Name, Middle Name
* Month, Day, Year of death
*   Age  at death
*   Place  died

Page  2 for each record:
*   ID  number
*   Birth  date and place
*   Father
*   Mother
*   Council  Number

Page  3 for each record:
*   ID  number
*   Cause  of death
*   Mortuary
*   Cemetery

Page  4 for each record:
*   ID  number
*   Contact  info
* Certificate (cert # indicates that a certificate was filed when
the person died. That certificate was included in the person's file folder)

Enjoy and happy hunting!

them from
my tree.

My 5th great grandparents are Manuel da Costa Goulart Gigante and Maria

My 4th great grandfather is the couple's son, Jose Pereira Maciel

My 3rd great grandfather is Antonio Pereira Maciel (1762-1819,) who
married Maria Antonia.

My 2nd great grandmother is Antonio and Maria's daughter, also named Maria
Antonia (1812-1894), who married Bento Pereira da Costa.

My 1st great grandmother is Virginia Emilia (1844 - ?), who married Jose
Francisco Martins (1828 - ?).Virginia was born, like her siblings, in Sao
Mateus, Pico. Her husband was born in Feteira, Faial. I have not been
able to find death info for the couple.

My grandfather is Antonio Francisco Martins, who married Elisa Abreu after
the couple separately immigrated to the U.S. He came from Feteira, Faial.
 She was from Sao Martinho, Madeira. The married in Oakland, CA.

Do you have a tree on Ancestry? Have done any of the DNA tests?

I look forward to hearing back from you.

keep track of those matches I type no tree in the note section. A note with no
known relationship most likely means that they have no tree or I have
already emailed them and was unable to find the connection. A note and a known
relationship means the note will have how we are related and in some case
that can be many different distance way only making us distant cousin but

Her dad looks like Joao da Medina da Miranda? and mom is Isabel Homem da

I think it says they are from Sao Matteus but I don't know if I am

I have searched through obits for Sao Matteus but haven't found any names

I don't think it should be generalized like that. No, not all Azorean
women assumed their husband's name. That didnt' happen until some time after
the 1900'stime lines should be paid careful attention to.

Women did not take on their husbands surname's on until recent
times...around or after the 1900's. My own Grandmothers did not take on my
Grandfather's surname on both sides. Slowly after that they were either given
to
carry on with their parents name or given an heavenly one. When the
Franciscan's friars of the 3rd order tookover the islands they began to make
women
invisible by instilling in them that to be be holy they had too give
themselves up and in order to do this they give up their individuality and
name
rights and become Mary and become Mary of the Angels etc. Most of the rich
and
spunky women were able and smart enough to carry on with their family
names for they brought huge dowries along with them and they alone decided who
amongst them was to inherit it.

These programs use the terminology of "nee" born or maiden name which is
correct for those who may have adopted their husbands name.

Something very important to note also was that even in the 1950's and
after that a woman who wanted to assume their husband's surname after marriage
had to request it, register it and pay for it so to legalize it. And,
this is noted in every record of birth.

Cheers,

Just thought I would let the list know about how MyHeritage website lists
their names in genealogy trees. I was told by a teacher of genealogy to
enter my tree in all of the sites that have this available: MyHeritage,
PastTimes, FamilySearch and Ancestry as they all have different search
parameters and data bases to search (and they all have free access except
Ancestry).
I decided to start putting my tree into MyHeritage. Now, it's okay except
that they list the females by their married name with the maiden name in
parenthesis. This is bad for the Azores because most, as we know, do use a
married name! This is okay in the US but not okay with our Portuguese names
nor my Italian side! I've emailed them but I don't believe that it will
make any difference, just wanted you to know this quirk in case you are
planning on entering some of your names into these 'other' genealogy sites!

I wanted to take a moment and share with all of you, my Portuguese
genealogy family, a heartwarming beautiful story that I was blessed to be
involved
in over the past few days. As many of you know, I am adopted, and I have
been searching for my biological father for many years now. 5 years ago,
my husband bought me the Ancestry dna test. I then tested with FTDna and
with 23andme, hoping to find dna cousins who would share their lineage with
me. I learned to read Portuguese, and began researching on the Azorean
gov't website to build a large tree with all the genealogy of my Portuguese
cousins, looking for common ancestors between them. I have created a Master
DNA tree which now contains over 10,000 people, and I have indeed found
common ancestors. I am waiting the results of a dna test for a woman I
believe
is my aunt or 2nd cousin. Expected date of discovery: March 21st! Along
 this journey, I have been richly blessed me with so many new friends and
Portuguese cousins. I have learned much about my ancestors, the Island of
Sao Miguel, from which they came, and the struggles my ancestors endured,
making my life possible.

About 3 years ago, I was working off a list of all of the men who bore my
biological father's name, Robert Moniz, and lived in the Fall River area at
the time of my birth. One man in particular had a son, Cory, that I
located on Facebook. I messaged him there, with my story, and he agreed to
take
the Ancestry DNA test for me. As it turns out, we are only 5th to 8th
cousins. Not close enough to provide any clues, but I added his family lines
to my DNA Cousin Tree anyhow, thinking sometime in the future, it may be
helpful. I also added his mother's lines, even though she was French
Canadian. That was about 2 years ago. My search continues and I have not
really
looked at this family in quite some time.

Saturday morning I received a benign message from a 70 year old woman on
Ancestry. Her husband had purchased the test kit for her as a Christmas
gift. She had received her results and was showing a 3rd to 4th cousin match
to Cory and was reaching out to me because I am the administrator of his
dna profile. She was given up for adoption in 1945 in NY, and has been
searching for her biological family for 50 years. Her husband had bought her
the Ancestry DNA test kit for Christmas. She wondered if I had some small
piece of information that could help her learn something about her family.
 Due to her age, she suspected her parents would have passed away by now.
The only thing she knew about her birth parents is that she had been told
her mom was 17 when she was born, and she believed her father may have been
a married man. I responded and explained that the test she was matching
did not belong to me, but if she would share her dna results with me, I would
take a look, as I did have quite a bit of information on Cory's family.

Then the whirlwind began. It was readily apparent to me that this adoptee
was related to Cory through his mother. I could see this due to the
common matches they shared. I started to identify common ancestors between
her
dna matches. And I just couldn't stop. I traced the lines down and then
found yet another common ancestor between unrelated 3rd cousins, and again
started to trace that line down and bang I found a marriage between the
two lines 5 dna cousins connecting to the wife and 6 unrelated dna
cousins connecting to the husband. I had identified this adoptees
grandparents! I nearly fell off my chair. This couple had 14 children..
which one
was her parent? Upon closer examination it was clear it could only be one
of two girls. I went onto Facebook and found the children of these two
woman and sent them a message with this adoption story. Yesterday, one of
the children called me letting me know that the woman we are looking for is
indeed her aunt, a daughter of the grandparents I had identified. She is 90
years, alive and well, and had been searching for the past 50 years for
her daughter. She had even hired 2 private investigators, all without
success.

We quickly identified her birth father, and learned it is suspected he
descends from Amerigo Vespucci he is a Vespucci from Brooklyn! How
amazing is that?!?!?

The Central Group (Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, Gracioso) received a lot of
Flemish colonists. On my first trip to the Azores in 1973, I spent a few days
on Faial and Pico before going onto Flores, and was surprised at seeing so
many blondes and redheads. Even Flores where my parents were born had it's
share of blondes and redheads. My mothers second cousin, Whaling captain
Antonio Corvello, was said to have flaming redhair.

pay them a bit of money to do so.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's new family trees (Gedcom) is up

2014-09-10 Thread Seekgene via Azores Genealogy
I just never put in "de" or "da" in my family tree or gedcom names for
this very reason. The reason is to avoid this very problem. "De" or "da" is
only a preposition and it only means "of".

In a message dated 9/10/2014 2:57:29 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time,

I wonder if it could be due to how FTM wrote the Gedcom.

When I write a surname into my program I try to avoid the issue of
screwing up the surname by entering the "d'" or "de", "do" etc on the first
line
name.

For example...

I enter "José de" on the Given name of the FTM program.
And "Paiva" on the surname.

I wonder if by entering "de" on the middle name section is what is causing
it not to match.

Yes, your mom doesn't show as a link because you ended with her on that
Gedcom.

I had my mom's DNA kit listed as H. Louise. In my Gedcom, she is Helen
Louise. That is why it wouldn't link her. I had to change it. So if have
Joe Mello and you have him as Jose de Melo, with the same birth and
everything, it may not show the link. Altino's my dad's 2nd cousin, but I
have the

When you post a tree on Family Tree DNA who can see it. If you believe

mistaken. The only person that can see the tree is someone that has a match
with you or the project administrator. Another misconception on posting a
tree on Family Tree DNA is that all your information is made available Only
the basic information is posted such as Name, birth date and place, and death
date and place. That is not much information but it is enough to find a
common match. The other thing people are reluctant to display is any
information on living persons. It is a matter of personal preference but
anyone
that knows how to use the inter net can find that information if they want.
Any match with me can look at my GEDCOM on Family Tree DNA and see my
birthday and  place.

If you have not posted your Family Tree Please Consider it even a partial

hasn't been tested. Now, wouldn't that be sad?

Take a deep breath and know that gedcoms will be coming. I will post
mine when I am ready. No sooner and no later.

That's pretty sad that if you take the time to submit a sample that you
can't take the time to submit a gedcom.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Posting Family Tree on Family Tree DNA

2014-07-29 Thread Seekgene via Azores Genealogy
There are still a lot of people that do not know how to make a GEDCOM. I
had a lot of trouble myself and tried many times without success. Several
kind people on this list offered advise on how to do it but I could never
get it to work. I finally asked a friend to come over and help me. He was
very gracious and even though he wasn't sure of how to do it either, he
managed to do it and now it's finally posted. One problem though is that the
"places" did not come through for some reason. I do have the places on my
family tree here on my computer, but they did not show up on my GEDCOM.
Strange, isn't it. I have also noticed several other GEDCOMS that are
missing the "places" just like mine. At least I do have a GEDCOM posted.

Rick,
Very well written. I too, do not understand the reluctancy of a majority
of the ftDNA population. I hope we can at least get the Azores DNA Project
members to see the value of the Family Trees.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA Relationship of 13 people on list

2014-05-02 Thread Seekgene via Azores Genealogy
I think this is the same situation that has shown up in my family DNA
(Family Finder). Mine and several of my first cousins have submitted our
Family Finder DNA. Some shows relationships that some do not yet we all share
one set of grandparents. When a child is conceived it receives half of
it's DNA from each parent. However, the parent gives a random set to each
child. It's like rolling the dice. You never know which sets of DNA will
show up in each child. That's why all of our children look different!

The best way to discover new cousins is to have as many of your cousins
submit their Family Finder DNA.

Sam,

My husband is Dennis Silva on your list & his maternal uncle is Buzzie
Mendonca, also on your list. I have a gedcom for Dennis on the site but not
for Buzzie yet. I will try to get that done in this next wk. Hope it will
help!

We're not showing a relation, but if Bill Antoine is related to Wally,
then we should show it. But maybe too remote.
