[AZORES-Genealogy] Children in CCA passport records?

2015-01-03 Thread Diane Cox
I am beginning to look for my Great-grandmother in the passport records.
According to family tradition, she came without her parents. She married
in California at age 16. Census records suggest she came possibly as young
as 8. Would she be listed individually? I haven't seen any ages that are
young.

When you are searching, do you look at each name or scan for the correct
island and then look at the name?

Thank you,
Diane

[AZORES-Genealogy] My Origins Results

2014-05-08 Thread Diane Cox
My mother was 100% from the Azores. My dad was basically English and
German.

My results:
45% North Mediterranean Basin
42% European Coastal Plain
7% North Circumpolar
5% European Northlands
1% East African Pastoralists

It doesn't appear from the maps that Great Britian is included in the
Eropean Coastal Plain, correct?

I have been getting Family Finder matches with North Circumpolar and
European Northlands sounding names. I have nothing at this point that even
gives a hint of how or through what line to connect.

Any thoughts from anyone?

 second marriage:

 Joseph-born 1888, Virginia-born 1891, Manuel Joseph-born 1897, Frank- born
 1899, and Rose- born 1902.

The second part of the Silva family that ended up in Sacramento was
Silvina Silva who married John Perry. Silvina was the sister of my
great-grandmother Mary Ferreira and daughter of Jose de Freitas da Silva.
Silvina and John were married in Hawaii around 1897. They moved from Hawaii
(Maui) to Sacramento around 1905 or thereabouts. Their children were
 Mary-born 1898 (Maui, Hawaii), Louise-born 1899 (Hawaii), Philip-born 1903
(Hawaii), Helen-born 1907 (Sacramento), and possibly a John born 1909 in
 Sacramento.

I have found the census records for Silvina Perry and her family in the
1910-1940 census, but yet to find a trace of them in the 1900 census.

Any possible connections would be great.

Here's another question that I'm getting, so I thought I would copy this
 info from before.

Question: What do you get with the Family Finder test?

Your personal page at FTDNA will have its own Family Finder section.

One section is your Matches (see List of Matches screen shot above). Since
I don't have everyone's permission to post their names, I blocked out most
of it except Shirley Allegre who is on this list. The notes in red in the
screen shot are mine. I'll just use Shirley since she's my dad's Portuguese
match (the others are my dad's American half. My dad is 50% Portuguese, so
I used his DNA for Family Finder. He will get more Portuguese matches
than I will, since I'm only 25% Portuguese).

My dad matches Shirley Jane Cambra Allegre (the buttons under her name give
me her email, allow me to make notes, or view her Gedcom). The math and
science (and there's A LOT) suggests my dad and Shirley are 2nd to 4th
cousins. They fine tune it more in the next column and suggest that they
are 3rd cousins. That's based on the fact that in the next column shows
that they share a total of 105.71 cM (centoMorgans - a genetic unit of
measure). The longest block is 16.76 cMs long. Since I know my dad and
Shirley are 4th cousins, once removed, I assigned that (there's so much
intermarriage in my lines and Shirley's that it screwed up the algorhythmn
slightly). Shirley's surnames should have appeared, but they didn't (you
can see where my dad has his American lines bolded where the surnames
match). I'm guessing it's because I put my de for de Mello in the given
name field in my program and Shirley may put it in her surname field or
 pre-surname field.

The screen shot titled Where Dad Matches Shirley shows the 24 locations
where my dad and Shirley match. This is the Barilla brand that fused
together with the other brands. It's probably a lot of our Antonio de Mello
line with a little of the other lines thrown in.

The screen shot titled Population Finder Beta shows my dad is 99.43%
Western European. They tested only French, Basque, Ornkey Island (the are
to Scotland what the Azores are to Portugal) and Spanish. For whatever
reason, the geneticists. think my dad's DNA is closer to French than Spain.
You can't see it on the screen shot, but it's says below it's in Beta with a
link to 36 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) with the gory details. I figure
one day when they test Portuguese, my dad will be reconfigurated.

 Hope this helps!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA Matches

2011-03-29 Thread Diane Cox
Cheri,

I did my DNA and get reports periodically, but I have never been able to
figure anything out. Can you figure out any clues from what you can see?

Thank you,
Diane Cox

 HI Sam,

I guess you are talking about your brother's kit?

On your brother, I see these difference/mutations:
 HVR1: 16192T, 16270T
 HVR2: 73G,150T, 204C, 263G, 315.1C, 533G

(For those who want to know: HVR is HyperVariable Region. These are 2
specific areas that the geneticists look at on the D-loop area of the
mitochondria. HVR1 covers about 440 base pairs. Only the differences from
the Cambridge Reference Sequence (CRS) are reported back. HVR 2 covers
about 574 base pairs. Again, only the differences are reported).

So I'll go and look to see how many of your brother's mutations are in the
 top 50 most common: http://www.smgf.org/mtdna/common_mutations.jspx

They are all there, except 533G.

But let's pretend for a moment that they were all in the top 50 mutations.
So then you go to look at his matches.
 Section 1 - Low Resolution Matches - HVR1 - 98 matches
 Mrs. Susan Crumb (HVR2)
 Mr. Daniel Boone
 Mrs. Katie Cross (FGS)
 Etc.

Susan Crumb tested both HVR 1 and HVR2. Scroll down to see if she matches
 your brother on HVR2.

Mr. Daniel Boone tested only HVR1 as nothing is after his name.

Mrs. Katie Cross tested the Full Genomic Sequence. Not only did she test
the 440 pairs on HVR 1 and the 540 on HVR2, but she did the entire 16,000+
molecule. Scoll down to see if she appears in your HVR2 matches.

98 matches isn't too much. You can turn off the alerts for the HVR1
matches. But if someone comes along who only tests HVR1, you won't know
 about it.

But you have that 533G. That's on your HVR2. I'll email the anthropology
unit at FTDNA and ask how common that mutation is (it could be # 51). Then
again, it could be # 450 on the list and be real special.

Since your HVR1 region is really common, you can turn off those matches if
you like. Basically, it's telling you that you, Susan Crumb, Daniel Boone,
and Katie Cross's common ancestor is Wilma Flintstone from 75,000 years
ago. I don't know about you, but I'm lucky just to have a couple of
branches that made it to the Middle Ages. And that's 500 years ago. That's
the time period record keeping began anyways, unless you have some royal
 blood in you.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Interesting story with recipes.

2011-02-13 Thread Diane Cox
Thank you! All I remember is a big soup pot and eggs. When I asked a
cousin many years later, they thought Great-Grandmother must have been
making kale soup. The recipes for kale soup I found did not include eggs so
this recipe was interesting. Unfortunately none of Great-grandmother's
recipes were passed down to my generation.

 Diane,

 It depends.

The sopas served at the Portuguese halls in California are served either
with the broth and bread in one pot and the meat and cabbage in the other
pot (and then you put it together yourself on your plate) or sometimes it's
broth and cabbage in one pot and the meat in the other or sometimes it's all
put together in one big pot. I just plop it on my plate. It all goes to
the same place - my stomach! LOL
