2015-08-17 Thread George Nelson
Aaron, we have a copy of the passenger list for the Braunfels with the two
individuals you are looking for...when a ship entered the Honolulu Harbor, the
ship's captain had to present a list of his passengers to the harbor master.
Arcenio and Joao Pereira Alves are listed as being from Porto Delgada. Arcenio
married Isabel about 1898. they had 11 children. Arcenio died 15 September
1920 in Piihonua, South Hilo, Hawaii. we can get copies of birth cert for
their children born after 1 July 1909 and a copy of Arcenio's death cert. you
can email your mailing address to pgsho...@hotmail.com. this is our email
address for the Portuguese Genealogical and Historical Society of Hawaii. We
will print off what we have in our database of 286,000+ Portuguese immigrants
and their descendants to Hawaii and get copies of the certificates. Dan

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] SS Braunfels passenger manifest list

 Hello,
I'm researching two passengers that arrived in Hawaii, 1895, on the SS
Braunfels. Their names are Arceirio Pereira Alves and Joao Pereira Alves.
The Hawaii Archives index lists them as being from Ponta Delgada, but I
haven't found them on the passport list...I even checked Madeira Island. I
also search The Immigrant Ancestry website (BYU), but still no luck. I know
the ship departed from Germany, then to Oport, Portugal. I can only reason
that they may have emigrated from mainland Portugal. Arceirio married Isabel
 Medeiros in Hawaii, approx 1900.
If anyone has any information on these two individuals, I would greatly
 appreciate it. Thank you.

Gloria,

You have to attach the file as a jpg or pdf. Not a link to your desktop on your
personal computer. We can't get into it.

Also, what is the year of immigration? What freguesia island are your
ancestors from?

Yes, you can possibly get more information with the Alien Registration. You can
get the form that they filled out with lots of information.

When requesting a death certificate, you use the date on the death certificate.
The tombstone could be wrong. I've seen some that they have tried to carve over
to correct the error. Hopefully the state you are researching has a death
index. If Ancestry doesn't have it, try FamilySearch or

Hello George

Thanks for the response. I found out about Manuel Galante from the Abergeldie
while trying to find information about my great grandfather on my Mother's
side. He was born in Hawaii, 1884ish and his name was either Luis Raposo
Borges, but I think he was born Luis Raposo de Medeiros. His dad who came to
Hawaii went by Antonio Raposo Borges and wife Maria de Jesus. When I send my
mailing address could you send this info too? I just visited Hawaii in late
August, and it got me thinking about my Hawaii connection.

Thanks

We are working on a reunion for 2014 for our family and learned from
family history that ancestors (my great-grandparents) came from
Azores to Hawaii on Bell Rock (1405 passengers) which arrived in Honolulu
on November 1, 1883. They then boarded a smaller boat to the island
of Hawaii and landed in Laupahoehoe Point.

Another vessel about 4 years later, Thomas Bell arrived on April 13,
1888 from Funchal, Madeira which contained my maternal
great-grandparents. How can I see the names on this vessel and the
  other one.

Is there a place to go for such information? I am clueless and
want to try and gather this information if I can. If any of you have

area of Sao Miguel, and his birthday dates ranges from December 1875 to 1879
based on various records (census, WWI draft register, petitition for
naturalization), but it could be different years. His petition for
naturalization record in Sacramento only states when he came from Hawaii to
California, but not when he came from Azores to Hawaii. The census records say
state he immigrated sometime around 1895. One ship came in 4 April 1895 - The
S.S. Braunfels.
One baptismal record of his first child Maria states his name as Joao Damos
Pareira. I searched the Index to Portugal Manifests on the Hawaii Archives
website and found a likely match - Joao Pereira Damaso who arrived on the S.S.
Braunfels in 1895.
http://archives1.dags.hawaii.gov/gsdl/collect/indextop/index/assoc/HASHeb18/98cce7a3.dir/doc.pdf

It does not state is age but only he was from Delgada. I tried to look up the
record on the handwritten ship passenger manifests from the Portuguese
Consulate - It is microfilmed and available at the Family History Library
#1017125, but I could not find an entry of a Joao Pereira Damaso for some
reason on that ship. Maybe I missed it. The typed index card where I found his
name has #257, sheet 6 written on it. From what I can tell, this does not
correlate with the hand written numbers on the ship passenger lists. Does
anyone know what the original source info for the index cards is?
Also, I am not sure on the names of his parents. The California Death Record
Index lists his father's last name as Camara and mother's last name as Joseph.
I have heard the family name of Camara from other cousins but it has never been
confirmed how the Camara (or Pereira Camara) name is connected. He always went
by John Perry.
Any info would be helpful,
 Thanks,
  David

Looking for any descendants of Lionel AVILLA (1879 - ?), who was almost 3 yrs.
old when he arrived in Honolulu June 1882 aboard the Vapor from S. Miguel.

His parents were Augusto José d'Ávila (1838 - 1903) and Helene d'Encarnação
(1849 - ?). Augusto José's parents were José Correia de Mello and Maria Clara.
Augusto J. was born in Graciosa, but I don't know where on Graciosa. Hoping,
if not assuming a descendant of Lionel, or any of his siblings Jose Augusto,
Pedro, Maria or Evelina would have that info.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Borges/Teixeira

2012-04-30 Thread George Nelson

Richard, I have some questions about your email. first, let me give you some
information. no ships came to Hawaii in 1887 from Portugal. in 1886 two
ships did come from Madeira. The St. Mary's Cemetery is in Waihee, Maui, not
Hana, Maui. the cemetery records do list a Manuel Teixeira, but he was born in
1890. of the 8 children you listed, I could only find Carrie, Manuel, Jacintho
and Virginia residing with their mother in 1910. marriage certificates for
Carrie and Virginia state that their father was born in Madeira and their
mother Emilia Jula Borges was born in Sao Miguel. the death cert for Emilia
Julia Borges does not list her parents' names. I did find an Emilia de Jesus
on one of the 1886 ships, but without an age. I did find Mary, Clara, and
Alvino Teixeira, but differnet parents. What record did you find these
children with Emilia? We have a data base of Portuguese immigrants to Hawaii
and their descendants (263,000 plus), so you would like a print out of the
information that we have. send your mailing addresss to pgsho...@hotmail.com.

A good place to start would be the records from NS Estrela in Ribeira
Grande. The name Emilia is not common so that would help in searching. I
would compile as much information on this side to possibly have name to go
 on and dates.

Also in thinking about her name Emilia de Jesus Borges makes me believe
she married in the Azores and as such was married when she arrived in
Hawaii. A Woman usually does not take a religious name until they are
married. I would tend to think she and her first husband came to Hawaii
together so their names may show up on the passport records in the Azores.

Sao Miguel is a large island and has many churches you would have to search
each of them separately. There are members on this list that specialize in
people that came to Hawaii from the Azores that may also help.

I have been attempting for several years to find information about my
great-great grandmother, Emilia de Jesus Borges born in 1870 in Sao
 Miguel.
She immigrated to Hawaii in 1887, lived on Maui and died in
1918 and is buried on Oahu. Her 1st husband was Manuel Teixeira who
originally we thought was also from Azores, but now believe him to be
from Madeira. He is buried in Hana on Maui at St. Mary's church
cemetery, that is all I know about him. They had 8 children Manuel,
Mary, Carrie, Manuel, Jacintho, Clara, Albino and Virginia all of the
children were born in Hawaii. Her 2nd husband was Jose G. Ferreira
(1867-1929) and the 2 children they had together were Elizabeth and
 Antone.
If anyone has any information about Emilia de Jesus Borges or Manuel
Teixeira, it would be very appreciated! Thank you.

Richard, we have the consulate logs for all ships that brought Portuguese and
Spanish to Hawaii. I created a data base of the 20,000 plus Portuguese
immigrants to Hawaii.. The problem is the names that they used on the
consulate log do not always match the names that they used later. As far as
the marriage, it is very common in Hawaii for individuals from Madeira and Sao
Miguel to intermarry, since many that came were related. Dan

Hi Don, While I have done extensive research in Sao Miguel and Massachusetts I
am not an expert on immigration to Hawaii. There are others on this list that
does that very well. I will address things in generalities and in this case
the immigration and marriage of this couple seem to be in question. Further
research on the immigration to Hawaii is needed which may help pinpoint the
origin of this couple. I find that a marriage of couple from the Azores and
Madeira unusual and that is why I would urge further research. If they married
in Hawaii then it is more likely and could be that a spouse had died in Hawaii.
And this Emilia married the second time from necessity. This is all
speculation on my part so records in Hawaii should be searched further. Rick
