[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Planning to look up these Lagoa, S.M. films; what to expect?
Wow, thank you very much. I think I will try to go to Dartmoth then. I was planning to go to Belmont, which is about 20 minutes closer, but I had been thinking a Bristol county FHC might be a better bet for what I'm looking for. I forgot about that plan when I didn't see Fall River on the list of FHCs, but the Dartmoth one is only a little further. I'm sure I'll only get through a small amount, so whatever they don't have I'll be able to order for the next time. Judi Phillips wrote: If you live in the Massachusetts area, the FHC in Dartmouth has most if not all of the films you listed. I have worked with the films for Nossa Senhora do Rosario there. From: pacheco.jess...@gmail.com To: Azores@googlegroups.com I recently put together a list of things I want to look up at a family history center and these are the rolls I am planning on looking up: Registros paroquiais, 1594-1883 Igreja Católica. Nossa Senhora do Rosário (Lagoa, Ponta Delgada) Batismos 1789-1862 FHL INTL Film 1438003 Batismos 1863-1883 FHL INTL Film 1438004 Items 1-4 Casamentos 1594-1832 FHL INTL Film 1438004 Items 7-8 Casamentos 1832-1882 FHL INTL Film 1438005 Items 1-3 Registros paroquiais, 1555-1886 Igreja Católica. I hope I have all the information organized right. I was wondering if anyone with experience could just tell me what to expect when looking these up. Obviously I don't plan or expect to find all the records in one session, but how difficult is it to locate records and information in these films? I don't speak any Portuguese, but I have become familiar with some terms, mostly ones involved with vital records. Will I have to transcribe the records by hand or are there usually printers? (I know that would vary from location to location. Maybe they would allow cameras?) As you can probably tell I am very new to this. I know the staff are very helpful, but since i'm dealing with non-English data I wanted to be as prepared as possible. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores-unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. No, unfortunately I don't. I'm not sure how to go about finding it as the books aren't available on microfilm yet for that year. I did find it strange though that in the marriage certificate of hers that you sent me, it would have made her birth year 1888/1889. Aside from that record though, the other information I have (US Census) it approximates her birth year at 1894. I would think there was an error with the marriage, but if I read it right, then it says that she was the person to sign it! However, as I said earlier, in her obituary in the diario de noticias, it was listed as Zimbrão. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Families from Lagoa to Fall River: de Andrade, da Costa, (Correia) de Fontes, (Medeiros) Rocha, da Costa do Castelo, Zimbrilo/Zimbro/Simbro
Adding in information just in case: Hi there. I was trying to figure out how I could best find help with these families, so I figured that I would make a single posting about all my Lagoa families. These are the surnames I'm describing in this post: de Andrade, da Costa, (Correia) de Fontes, (Medeiros) Rocha, da Costa do Castelo, and Zimbrilo/Zimbro/Simbro (I haven't figured out the correct form of this name yet.) For many I do not know the parish. 1. Maria de Andrade was born 2 Apr 1888 to Antone de Andrade and Maria Rose (Rocha?). She immigrated in 1903 and married Joao Pacheco (from Nordeste) (1b) in 1906; this was possibly in the United States. 1b. Joao Pacheco was born 9 Mar 1888, I believe in *Nordeste* to Jose Pacheco and Rosalina Moniz. He and his wife had 8 children that I know of, all in America: Mary, Manuel, Frank, Constance, John, Georgiana, Antone, and Joseph. He died 22 Jan 1972. 2. José da Costa was born 3 Jun 1890 or 3 Jul 1890 to Manuel da Costa and Maria Medeiros. He married Maria de Jesus Fontes (3) in 1909. They arrived in America on 14 Mar 1912. They had their first son, Antone Costa, in Nov. He is my great-grandfather who is still alive! José died on 16 Apr 1963. I believe it's possible that he and Maria had other children who could have died between 1909 and 1912 but I have no foundation for this belief. 3. Maria de Jesus Fontes was born 16 Oct 1890 to Manuel Correia de Fontes (4) and Maria da Estrella Rocha (5). She passed away on 22 Oct 1988. 4. Manuel Correia de Fontes was born 1866 to Francisco de Fontes and his (uknown) *Antónia Emilia de Jesus *// mother. *( they had 2 other childre)* He was married prior to 18 nov 1889 . He died 1 Oct 1929 after being hit by an automobile in Fall River (There's a whole article in the Diario de Noticias!). 5. Maria de Estrella Rocha was born 15 Apr 1957 to Francisco Medeiros Rocha and Quiteria de Jesus. She arrived in the US 9 Dec 1920 with her husband and other family. *She may have been born in Santa Cruz (can't find source)* *(she and husband had 8 children) * 6. Joao do Costa Castelo was born probably prior to or around 1860. He married Maria da Conceicao Zimbrilo (7) prior to 1880. *It is possible that he was not born in Lagoa but I believe he was.* 7. Maria da Conceicao Zimbrilo was born 1857. She died 6 Aug 1940. So that's about it. I hope there is something in here that can be used to locate some more information. This community has been so great and helpful and I've only been a member for a few days. I am not the most experienced genealogist but I hope that some day I will be able to contribute something. Miguel Hi. My great-great grandfather was José Rego Vital (1889-1956). My grandmother told me he came to America to escape a war. I was wondering if anyone had any information about this because I haven't heard anything else. He came over in 1913. Also, I cannot find immigration records for him or his wife Maria dos Anjos Costa Costello. I don't know if they used fake names to come over but I do believe his immigration was illegal. Does anyone know anything about similar cases and how I could go about finding his immigration information? I think he comes from a big family of Rego Vitals. I have found many records on ancestry.com, especially draft cards, with RV's but I can never decide whether it's one of his brothers or if it's a cousin. There were many boys but few names; Jose, Manuel, Antonio, Joao, Joaquim; I think we all know what that's like. ; ) a photograph of him: http://o.mfcreative.com/f2/file11/objects/c/9/1/bc91434a-fb88-49df-a76b-eac809012699-0.jpg Thanks for reading this. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores-unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: War in 1910's? about ggrandfather Jose Rego Vital from...
Yes, he does come from Lagoa! It'd be wonderful if this line IS related to your cousin's. My source on the immigration year is the 1920 US Census if anyone is wondering. I am looking through the website Cheri sent though and it looks promising. Thanks everyone for helping out this new member of the list. =) marra...@cs.com wrote: In a message dated 6/6/2009 1:41:05 PM Eastern Daylight Time, pacheco.jess...@gmail.com writes: Hi. I would venture a guess that your ancestor is from Lagoa, S. Miguel, and descends from Vital do Rego Baldaia (1637-1701). My cousin Diana Cestódio Silva did some extensive research on this line, and might be able to help you. She found information that Carlos Machado and Rodrigo Rodrigues did not document in their genealogies. She is a member of the list and I'm sure that if she thinks she can help, she will get in touch with you. Giid luck! Thanks so much Cheri. I was using Firefox. =) Cheri Mello wrote: Everyone, please don't change the title of the threads (or subject lines). Jesse - to access the CCA site, go to the URL Rosemarie C posted: http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/ig (Use Internet Explorer or Safari - Firefox and the others don't work) On the right side, click on Registos Paroquiais Next screen, under Sao Miguel, click Lagoa Next screen says that the island, Sao Miguel, for the council of Lagoa, for freguesia of Rosario, has deaths (obitos). Then it says Ver to Go see what is posted. Click on Ver. Next screen, you see that the series starts with 1594. Click that and you can start searching the records for your deaths in Rosario.
