Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for SILVEIRA, FARIA (as well as Azevedo and Martins)
There were a lot of Faria's in Santa Clara, Santa Clara County, California. Also see as spelled Freria in 1920 census. On Dec 31, 2013 3:28 PM, Deb McCabe looking4root...@yahoo.com wrote: Happy New Year's Eve everyone. I am hoping someone will recognize these names and help me fill in some blanks. Looking for information on two women and their families: a) Looking for Maria/Mary Silveira (Silveira is her married name). Born c. 1837 in Faial, Azores. Immigrated in 1865. Married Joaquim SILVEIRA, date unknown. She died 4 May 1902 in Oakland, CA. b) Mary's obituary lists two daughters, Mrs. A.F. FARIA (Faria is her married name) and Louise Azevodo (should be Azevedo). I am trying to learn the first name of Mrs. A. F. FARIA. I wonder if this is the same Faria family that owned Faria Brothers hardware store in San Leandro/San Lorenzo area. What I know: a) Mary Silveira's daughter, Maria Luisa “Louise” Josefa “Josephine” Silveira, was born 27 March 1871, likely in Rhode Island. Died on 2 Sept 1946 in San Leandro, CA. Louise married Manuel Martins Azevedo in 1889 in Alameda County, CA. He was born in Feteira, Faial in 1857. The couple had two children, Louis Martin/Martins Azevedo and Mary/Mae Margaret Azevedo. b) An A.S. FARIA, his wife Catharine and sister-in-law Nell Hannon, attended Louise's husband's funeral in 1937. At the time the FARIAs were residing at 2229 Washington Avenue, San Leandro, CA. The census for A.S. Faria says his mother was born in Rhode Island. Ponderings: a) Wonder if Mrs. A.F. FARIA is the mother of A. S. FARIA? A. S. FARIA was born in 1883. b) There is an A.F. FARIA (1881-1964) and his wife Mamie (1884 - 1971) at Holy Sepluchre Cemetery in Hayward, CA. He is too young to be Mrs. FARIA's spouse. Yes, I think the age was backwards, because at that year my grandfather was about 22. The father in this letter is his stepfather because family lore has it that his mother and father never married. He also says to Manuel to present himself in January and to say he was in America for a short time, did not make any fortune and to please be patient and do as his father was bidding him to to save himself the embarrassment at the age of 42 and you will never be your own person again if you don't do as I'm telling you to do and there's no more to say about this. Note worthy is the age of 42 he mentions. Army enlistment was at the age of 20 or 19. Standard serving time would be 2 years. Did he write backwards, was Manuel 24? Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry.com versus FamilySearch.org
Thank you for the clarification! I was confused on this! On Jun 16, 2012 11:07 AM, Cheri Mello gfsche...@gmail.com wrote: I was talking to an experienced researcher (probably over 25 years) on my mom's side (from the Ozarks of Missouri). We were discussing the 1940 census and she mistakenly believed Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org were the same company!! So if there's confusion out there among experienced researchers, there's confusion with those new to genealogy too! Think of it this way...if you want a Japanese made car, you can buy a Toyota or a Honda, but they are not the same. Same thing with Ancestry and Family Search. They both have databases, but they are not the same. Ancestry started in 1983 in the publishing business (books, how to guides, etc). In 1996, they began digitizing records. In 2007 they got into DNA. A year or 2 ago, they became a publicly traded company in America's New York Stock Exchange. I think their biggest thing though is their subscription database to their digitized records: http://goo.gl/uMiGD FamilySearch is part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS). They began collecting records around the 1890s as part of their religious belief that family is eternal. Their records are worldwide. They did filming (and then putting things onto microfilm and fiche) and are currently digitizing their record collection as well. Their current digitized collection is free, no subscription required. Last April, they told Joao Ventura and me that they will be done converting all film to digital images in 4 to 5 years. They are currently indexing which will be an ongoing process for many more years. There is not an answer to which one is better. It depends on your search. If I'm looking at the 1940 United States Census, I'll go to FamilySearch as they are further along in the process with about 62% of that census done. They also have some records for Brazil and Portugal (the mainland). But if I want censuses from other years, I have a tendency to use Ancestry. If I want to see a marriage record (the actual record), it depends. Some of Ancestry's are indices only and some of FamilySearch's are indices only, so I have to check both until I learn where to do for that particular record. -- Cheri Mello Listowner, Azores-Gen Researching: Vila Franca, Ponta Garca, Ribeira Quente, Ribeira das Tainhas, Achada -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com.
