It cost $20 for the index search and $20 for a copy of the 3 documents in the file, a couple of postage stamps and a little time. I got a copy of my grandfather's Certificate of Naturalization and I found out that he arrived in Boston, Massachusetts on 15 June 1904 aboard the SS Canopic. Was it worth it? YES! After I requested an index search, I got a C-File number. Then I sent them G-1041a with the C-File number filled in on page 2. Now that I have the Certificate, I see that the C-File number and the certificate number are the *same*. The Declaration (12 June 1924) and Petition (1 July 1927) have similar information on them, but as was mentioned earlier, there may some changes in information if it takes time to complete the process. [AZORES-Genealogy] Naturalization Packet
This is an update to my post on 12 October 2013 concerning my efforts to obtain naturalization information from the USCIS. On 23 August 2013, based on information posted in the Azores Genealogy Group I sent the form 1041 (and $20) to USCIS seeking information. I got a reply from USCIS on 8 October 2013. I sent the form 1041A (and another $20) requesting a copy of the documents in the C-File. I got the copies on 17 December 2013. Included were the Declaration of Intention, Petition for Naturalization, and the Certificate of Naturalization. On the Declaration was the information I was looking for, namely the date of arrival in the US, the port of arrival, and the ship. Thanks to the Azores Group, I now have some important new information! [AZORES-Genealogy] US Naturalization Packet
Based on an earlier post, I filled out a G-1041 Genealogy Index Search Request and sent it to the USCIS with $20 on 23 August 2013. I got an answer dated 8 October 2013 and was happy to learn that my grandfather became a naturalized citizen in 1927 (new information to me!) and that USCIS has a C-File containing other, possibly new information such as where and when he arrived in the US. I filled out a G-1041A Genealogy Records Request and sent it to USCIS with another $20. I am now anxiously awaiting photocopies of the documents in the C-File. The process could not have been easier. You could pay someone to do the research, but in my opinion you would miss out on a great opportunity to learn first-hand about your ancestors, where they lived, etc. Cheri Mello has alot of very helpful information for new Azores researchers and the Azores government has put the original baptism, marriage and death records on the Internet making them available to all. Finally, the Azores group is very helpful (and patient) with new researchers - you can read the posts, ask questions, and get (free) assistance from many different sources. Think of the fun you will have! When you hit a brickwall in your research, that's the time to get help from a professional. Hi. I am researching Pedro Tavares born 1883 in Agua de Pau, San Miguel and have been unable to find him in the passport files or ship passenger lists that are available. According to the 1930 US Census, he arrived in the US in 1904 (his wife provided that information to the census enumerator). His older brother Jose was born in AdP in 1882. He received a passport 5 June 1904, but I think he did not use it. Jose was married in AdP in November 1906, had a large family, and presumably never left. It seems to me that if Pedro was going to leave the Azores, he would have gotten a passport with his brother and likely travelled together. Thanks! [AZORES-Genealogy] Guidance Needed, Please
I have been trying to locate the marriage record for José Joaquim Madruga and Maria da Conceição. A daughter, Maria Hortênsia was baptized in the parish of Santissima Trindade in Lajes on the island of Pico about 1853, so I have been looking at an LDS microfilm for marriages in that parish from approximately 1830 to 1860 without success. That suggests that they were married in another parish. According to the NEPS databases, the largest number of persons named “Madruga” outside of Lajes, is in Ribeiras. Is that still considered part of Lajes? Is that a logical place to look next? Note: Maria Hortênsia was married 12 September 1877 in Horta, Faial. [AZORES-Genealogy] LDS Family History Library Feedback
A couple of weeks ago I asked about using LDS microfilms. Since then I ordered 2 films (baptisms marriages) for Horta (Matriz). With the marriage date found on the CITCEM site I was able to find the marriage record I was looking for! The only problem was that the microfilm was much smaller than I expected (almost like 16mm film) and difficult to read on the Library's equipment. However, I was able to print the 2- page record, bring it home, scan it, clean it up in Photoshop, and then extract some very helpful information. For example, the record listed the parents and the age of the bride and groom. I also found the baptism record I was looking for on the other film (same small film, difficult to read) and one additional record to add to the family history. Unfortunately, the microfilm printer stopped working and I was unable to get copies of these records and I ran out of time transcribing them. The Library was only open 3 hours that day. I will have to make another trip to the Library when they get the printer working again. In one record (May 1884), after the name of the father is the word policia. Is that his occupation? In the later record (August 1885) his name is followed by the word trabalhador which I believe is a worker. Finally, I discovered that Amelia Bettencourt was not born in 1891 as it said in the Diario de Noticias newspaper, nor 1889 as it says in a family bible, nor 1887 as it says on her gravestone, but she was born in 1885 as it says on her baptism record -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. I found the website of the Núcleo de Estudos de Populaçáo e Sociedade, Instituto de Ciéncias Sociais, which is run by the Universidade do Minho, in Braga, Portugal. There are several databases with information not available on the CCA site. It is just data, no original documents or images. I was particularly interested in data for Pico and Faial. I emailed the database administrator and asked where the data came from and he said it came from the original records kept in Horta. The url for their new website is: http://www.ghp.ics.uminho.pt I did find some of the information to be useful and consistent with what I found in the Library, but one record in the database was obviously wrong (too many years between the birth of parent and child. After I posted about the LDS Library, I spoke to the Library Volunteer Coordinator and she is working to resolve the equipment problems. Yes, there are different lenses for different films, but not all the Library volunteers know this or how to change them. She also offered to let me take the films to a nearby public library which has similar equipment for reading the microfilm and printing the images. I think the parish priest wrote the names of the individuals (note how similar the signatures are) and the individual put his mark on the document. [AZORES-Genealogy] LDS Family History Library Resources
Does anybody have any experience using the microfilms available through the LDS Family History Libraries? I have gone through the records available online at the CENTRO DE CONHECIMENTO DOS AÇORES and recently an online database at Núcleo de Estudos de Populaçáo e Sociedade, Instituto de Ciéncias Sociais, Universidade do Minho, but Ineed to find records that are not available at those websites. For example, a birth in Horta 1885 and a marriage that took place in Lajes do Pico in 1877. According to the LDS website, there are films covering Horta during that timeframe, but do the films contain images of the original documents (like the CCA site)??
