>From what I have been able to find, Grandma is the mother of Maria do
Esprito Santo and the mother-in-law of Caetano Moniz FURTADO. This
would mean that Vovo' is Rosa de Jesus, the mother of Ermelinda
CARREIRO (NUNES).

In the other book, I found a baptism record of the following:

March 3, 1902 - Evangelina Moniz FURTADO, daughter of Caetano M.
FURTADO and Maria do Espirito Santo, both of Arrifes, St. Michael,
Azores. Godparents were Jose Carreiro de Medeiros e Ermelinda de
Jesus.

I'm wondering if this Ermelinda de Jesus is the same as Ermelinda
CARREIRO (NUNES), daughter of Rosa de Jesus? Could Jose Carreiro de
Medeiros be her brother given that Ermelinda's father had died by
1901? (The passenger list of the Dona Maria, dated 1901, listed Rosa
de Jesus as a widow. Ermelinda married Manoel NUNES in 1904.)

[AZORES-Genealogy] Teaching Myself a Little Portuguese....regarding the FURTADO Family.

2012-01-06 Thread Pat McCoy
The book, "Portuguese Spinner", just arrived today and I got a better
look at the photo of the FURTADO Family.

According to Babelfish, the Portuguese word for grandmother is: Avo'.
The caption of the photo on page 110 says: Vovo'. Babelfish could
not help me translate Vovo'.

Can someone clarify this for me?

Thanks!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] What Happened to FURTADO'S in Fall River, Massachusetts?

2012-01-04 Thread Pat McCoy
That is so sad! Now that I've discovered that the descendants of
Caetano Moniz FURTADO are related to my friend, I was hoping to be
able to contact them. My friend grew up knowing virtually nothing
about his Portuguese heritage and I thought it would be nice to put
him in touch with his new-found cousins.

Given the "brick walls" that I'm working to knock down, it's just a
challenge trying to figure who is related to who while searching for

[AZORES-Genealogy] Portugues Naming Customs - Can Someone Help Me Understand?

2012-01-03 Thread Pat McCoy
I've been researching the Azorean roots of a friend of mine and have
been able to trace his family tree back to his grandmother, Ermelinda
CORREIRO (NUNES) and, recently, to his great-grandparents, Jose'
CORREIRO and Rosa de Jesus. I've just recently learned that Jose'
CORREIRO and Rosa de Jesus had another daughter, Maria do Espirito
Santo (FURTADO).

Not understanding the Portuguese naming customs is creating some
confusion for me when attempting to research the various branches of
one family. Could someone help clarify how Ermelinda and Maria were
named so differently even though they are sisters?

Thanks!

[AZORES-Genealogy] What Happened to FURTADO'S in Fall River, Massachusetts?

2012-01-03 Thread Pat McCoy
A few months ago, there used to be a website for FURTADO'S Chouricos
and Linguica in Fall River, Massachusetts at the same street address
where my friend's grandparents used to live. Now the website is gone
and the closest type of website I can find for Chouricos and Lingquica
in Fall River, Massachusetts is a place called MELLO'S.

Does anyone know what has happened?

Thanks!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree from Mary Louise Rego

2012-01-02 Thread Pat McCoy
I'm not certain if Mary Louise Rego is subscribed to this forum. She
has posted a family tree, which includes Ermelinda CARREIRO NUNES but
she has marked it as "private". Ancestry.com has suggested that I
attempt to contact her. I thought I would give it a try here, just in
case.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Researching NUNES, CARREIRA/CARREIRO, FURTADO Families = Fall River, Massachusetts

2012-01-01 Thread Pat McCoy
I came across something that has piqued my curiosity. John Raposo
mentioned a baptismal record for Evangelina Moniz FURTADO where the
godparents were listed as Jose' CARREIRO de MEDEIROS and Ermelinda de
JESUS. Then I came across a listing on Ancestry.com that mentions
Caetano Moniz FURTADO and Maria (do Espirito Santo) Esirito MEDEIROS.
Is MEDEIROS the family surname and would that connect Jose' to Maria?

NUNES are connected to the FURTADOs!

Where can I find that story you mentioned on the FURTADO's and
Emily/Ermelinda? Is it online or at a public library?

Thanks, again!!!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Locating the village or freguesia

2011-12-31 Thread Pat McCoy
Okay. Just in case anyone is researching Caetano Moniz FURTADO and
Maria do Espirito Santo FURTADO, I found the following listing on the
S. S. Dona Maria, sailing from Sao Miguel, Azores on 30 March 1901 and
arriving in the Port of New York 12 April 1901:

Caetano Moniz FURTADO 24 M Laborer Portuguese Fall River, MA
Maria do Espirito Santo 22 F Domestic Portuguese Fall River MA

It appears that they arrived with Ermelinda (CARREIROher last name
was not included on the roster...it only listed her first name) and it
also appears that Ermelinda's mother, Roza de Jesus 40 F Widow is
listed with them.

I have reason to suspect that this is the same Caetano Moniz FURTADO
who founded the business FURTADO'S in Fall River, Massachusetts,
selling New England Chourico and Linguica.

Thanks, Judi.

BTW, I live in the DC suburbs so it would be a bit of a long journey
up to Massachusetts. *Smile* I think I still have the e-mail of the
kind priest who sent me the baptismal records so I can check with him
regarding the marriage records.

Thanks, again.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Locating the village or freguesia

2011-12-30 Thread Pat McCoy
FYI, at FamilySearch.org, I found the following under: "Massachusetts
Marriages, 1841-1915 for Ermelinda J. CARREIRO"

Name: Manoel NUNAS
Event: Marriage
Date: 24 Sep 1904
Place: Fall River, Massachusetts
Gender: Male
Age: 35
Marital Status: Married
Birthplace: St. Michael's, Az.
Estimated Birth Year: 1869
Father: Manoel
Mother: Francisca Candida
Spouse: Ermelinda J. CARREIRO
Marital status: Married
Father: Jose C.
Mother: Rosa De Jesus

I don't know anything more other than what I've found at
FamilySearch.org. I don't know their dates of births, when and where
they married, when and where they died, etc. I'm not certain how they
are connected to the FURTADOs that are also listed on the baptismal
record.

The photocopy of the baptismal record of their son, Manuel Edward
NUNES, states the following about the birthplace of Manoel NUNES: "S.
Vicente Ferreiro, S. Miguel (Acores)" and for Ermelinda CARREIRO
NUNES: "Arrifes, S. Miguel".

Is it safe to presume that S. Vicente Ferreiro and Arrifes are the
villages they are from even though I've seen them listed as
"parishes"?

Thanks!

Hi, Linda.

With all the different correspondences going out and coming in, I'm
not certain if I've contacted her yet. I don't know anything about
the parents of Manoel NUNES and his wife, Ermelinda CARREIRO.

BTW, I've noticed that part of your name is FURTADO. One the
baptismal records of Manoel's and Ermelinda's son, the names of
Caetano Moniz FURTADO and Maria do Espirito Santo FURTADO are listed.
Are those FURTADOs familiar to you, by chance?

Thanks!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Locating the village or freguesia

2011-12-29 Thread Pat McCoy
Thanks, Shirley.

Manoel NUNES and Ermelinda CARREIRO were married in Fall River,
Massachusetts, USA, on September 24, 1904. I have been trying to
track down their families of origins and the villages or frequesias
they came from before they emigrated to America.

Thanks, again.

2011-12-28 Thread Pat McCoy
Hi, Shirley.

I'm wondering if I could add my question here as well.

I have two people, from Sao Miguel, that I am researching:

Manoel NUNES from Sao Vincente Ferreiro Parish, (born about 1867 to
1869) and his spouse, Ermelinda Carreiro, (born about 1881), in
Arrifes Parish. I've attempted to send an e-mail to both parishes but
never received any response.

Do you think you can assist me?

Thanks!

I do have a lead, of a sort, in The Azores. I just need to get the
funding together to obtain death certificates so I can get the names
of the great-grandparents and then trace their family trees on back.
I was just curious as to if others, on this list, were researching the
same families.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Researching NUNES, CARREIRA/CARREIRO, FURTADO Families = Fall River, Massachusetts = More Info

2011-11-23 Thread Pat McCoy
Here's what I have on the grandparents
of my friend:

Manoel/Manuel NUNES (born circa 1867),
came from Sao Vicente Ferreira, Sao Miguel,
The Azores to Fall River, Massachusetts circa
1887.

His first marriage to Maria MACHADO took place,
in Fall River, Massachusetts, on February 2, 1891.
Maria MACHADO NUNES died April 22, 1903,
from pulmonary tuberculosis in Fall River, Mass.
They had at least three daughters from this union.
(I have very little information on Maria MACHADO.)

Manoel/Manuel NUNES remarried, on September 24,
1904, to Ermelinda CARREIRO, in Fall River, Mass.
This union produced two more children. Manoel/Manuel
NUNES died November 3, 1927 in Fall River, Mass.

The only son of Manoel/Manuel NUNES and Ermelinda
CARREIRO NUNES, Manuel Edward NUNES, was
born November 6, 1920 and was baptized three days
later at Saint Michael's Catholic Church, Fall River, Mass.
The sponsors listed on the Certificate of Baptism were:
Caetano Monis FURTADO and Maria do Espirito Santo
FURTADO.

I've found a passenger list, from 1901, that lists Ermelinda,
Caetano FURTADO, and Maria do Espirito Santo but I have
not been able to locate any passenger lists that correctly
match the Manoel/Manuel NUNES that I have. The lists
that have "Manuel or Manoel NUNES" listed are all the
wrong ageseither way too old or way too young. There's
been a family rumor that the male ancestors worked as
fishermen before coming to America so I wonder if
Manoel/Manuel was a mariner who arrived as a crew member
and decided to stay.

I'm also trying to figure out how Ermelinda CARREIRO and
Mr. and Mrs. FURTADO are related. The Certificate of
Baptism does not mention if they are blood-related.

According to the church records at Saint Michael's in
Fall River, Massachusetts, Manoel/Manuel NUNES
was from Sao Vicente Ferreira, Sao Miguel, Azores,
and Ermelinda CARREIRO NUNES was from Arrifes,
Sao Miguel, Azores. The records do not indicate where
the FURTADOs came from. (Possibly Arrifes, given that
they arrived with Ermelinda?)

I'm curious about their Azorean origins and the possibility
that my friend may still have cousins in the old country.

Thanks, again, for your assistance.

I'm in the process of researching, on behalf of a friend, his Azorean

his grandfather came from San Miguel and his grandmother emigrated
